Yeah, the flu is nasty this year... I'm now on 1 week and it's getting better, but still lingering.

3 solid days of fever above 100

Did it help getting the flu shot? I did NOT get the flu shot, and curious if they got close to helping this year..

And what I remember T-Fog's boss is is a real hard-ass! [Coffee]

I'm the head cook, bottle washer, and HMFIC, so yeah, opting out of work is not really an option. I never have had a flu shot, but I'm reasonably sure this isn't flu. Flu usually isn't respiratory(except in 1918, when it killed 20 million).

My oldest (5) got the flu a couple weeks ago, I've never seen him down for the count like that, he even complained of having a hard time walking.

Influenza is pretty light this year with only 121 hospitalizations so far in Colorado. Influenza Like Illness's (ILI) are climbing fast however. An ILI is just what is says, looks and feels like the flu but it is not, so there are other virus out there. Maintain good hygiene, drink plenty of fluids, and don't eat sushi from a gas station.

There's some nastiness out there. Heard a number of folks around me at work with a nagging cough. Wife has also been hit pretty hard and had a fever that just peaked at a little over 102. She's coming back down after a nap and some Acetaminophen.

I got a flu shot that made me feel like crap for a couple of weeks after, but haven't been afflicted with the crud going around right now.

...yet.

My wife tried to get me sick last week. She works in an office where lots of people don't think they can take time off when sick, so they show up half dead and spread it around.

She went down for the count on Sunday with a fever, cough, and generally feeling poor, and still had the fever yesterday when I talked to her (I had to get on a plane).

I started to get the sore muscles and general drained feeling, but I managed to kick it with Vitamin C, Thieves Oil, Zinc, and Garlic. Yes, garlic. Take a clove of fresh garlic, peel it, chop it into swallowable pieces, and take like a vitamin. It'll kick the crud pretty effectively.

Absolutely. It's an antibacterial agent, best applied orally.

The spousal unit ended up at 102.7 last night, went down after some acetaminophen and was back at 102.7 again this morning. She was 99.5 at lunch time so hopefully she's on the flip-side of this bug.

No flu here, but picked up a nasty head cold.

Sunday around noon I started sneezing a lot and noticed I was getting a severe runny nose. By Monday morning it was a full-fledged head cold. I barely slept last night and dragged all day @ work today - being careful to stay well away from everyone else. So congested I can barely hear. Just drank one of those new TheraFlu PowerPods (they only had the Daytime ones @ my local King Soopers) and am going to take a nap now - or just go to bed for the night.

I'm past the worst of it, just lingering cough that's annoying AF

So I picked up 1.5L of this particular med... at least while on it, I don't cough... even when I do, I don't care.

I've got too much stuff to do, don't have time for this being sick crap.

No flu here, but picked up a nasty head cold.

I think I'm on the downside of a mild head cold myself. On the other hand, the last time I had a "mild head cold" it just seemed to fall outta my head and into my lungs. I coughed bad for a solid month. That cough lingered so long my doc sent me in for chest x-rays to make sure it wasn't something worse.

That's also one of the downsides of being married to a nurse. No telling what kind of sickly, skanky, crap she drags home from the hospital. I may have previously mentioned I wanted to set up a decon unit on the front porch...she balked at that. Garage is out, too.

The plague is really messing with me today. First I?m burning up and then I?m freezing. I can only imagine this is what menopause feels like.

When the chills hit me I start shaking like a cat shitting a peach pit. I feel like maybe there?s a little epilepsy mixed in with this plague.

The funnest part about it though is that my eyes feel like they?re on fire and there?s some sort of small mythical creature in my head pushing on the back back of them in an attempt to push them out of their sockets.

Ugh.

Happy holidays.

I hope that you feel better soon.

The last week of Nov and the first week of Dec I was fighting off something??. Felt OK in the morning, by 2 PM I would get a fever, take aspirin, finish the work day, go home and ingest Alka-Seltzer cold and flu and a shot of whiskey and go to bed. Repeated this every day for almost two weeks. It sucked as I don't get sick very often.

Just remember.... alcohol amplifies the effects of medicine....not sure if it's a warning, a challenge, or user instructions...

Why is it?

Take meds, get tired, feel like shit, go to bed early, cough/hack til 0200. Finally, coughing stops and I start to drift off to sleep. But, wait... What's that noise? Why is Scout (little boy Corgi puppy) coughing, too? Oh, because he's not. He just hopped up on the bed to say, "Ha-rumpa, ha-rumpa....bleeech. See, dad? I'm sick, too!"

So, already feel like warmed over death, doing laundry at about 0300, cleaning up after sick dog, make a cup of coffee using one of those pod things and forget to put cup under coffee dispenser... FML today, man.

Naturally, Mrs BG is working a nite shift so I don't even get to share the misery with her.

Man, you guys are giving me the heebie jeebies. I hate getting sick and around the holidays I'm out in public more. I haven't been sick since 2014 but it was a bad one, a mycoplasma infection or walking pneumonia that lasted a month and a half and required antibiotics. Ick. Funny, I haven't had the flu since I STOPPED getting regular flu shots (USAF can't mandate it on retirees). Clinic keeps pushing them and I keep saying I'm open to it if anyone can show me that they're more effective than they've been for the past 25-30 years. I've had other illnesses but not the flu.

^^^ This ^^^

Every time they push it at work, or at the clinic- I ask for copies of the efficacy studies on this particular concoction they have this year.... blank stares- they don't know what to do with somebody that asks uncomfortable questions.

If they try to argue, I have stories... like a horse that died of rabies, and was vaccinated according to vet's schedule FOR RABIES... so when pressed, they admitted there have been ZERO efficacy studies on equine rabies vaccine. We could have apparently injected him with saline and it would have been just as effective.... and that's a good place to start- because I then follow up with "they have efficacy studies for canine vaccines, why are we not as important as my dog?"

"I get it, my dogs ARE cuter than me... but is that what it's about?"

My dad (a pediatrician) seems to think it's either H1N1 or Influenza B. Both of which are in this year's flu vaccine. He gets the shot every year as a healthcare provider, and hasn't had any issues. I've still self quarantined from him, as he's 90 years old. We'll catch up after the holiday.

What the ED's are seeing is mostly Flu A (92%) with H1N1 the predominant strain. Colorado Data matches national data at 92%. What's interesting is the number of ILI's that the ED's are seeing compared to actual diagnosed flu. The number of ILI's surpassed last years number with a rapid spike at the beginning of December, while the number of actual flu cases is well below last year. The data to come out this in the next day or so will be interesting. Most of the data so far is pointing to a fairly mild start. Let's hope it stays that way. Flu mortality (mostly from pneumonia) usually increases in the next month or so. We are seeing some sick people in the ED's right now.

Wash those hands boys and girls.

This is something that has been tracked in the past. Not sure if it still is, but I wouldn't doubt it. Syndromic Surveillance only applies to those who visit and ED or Doc's Office. For those of us, that refuse to go to the doctor and self medicate we get get missed in the surveillance. Why is this tracked? If you go to Target, Costco, Walgreens, etc. and they are sold out of "Cold and Cough" medicine, well there's your sign. If this happens in July, in a cluster, say one or two zip codes, that could a bio agent release. Even though we are very mobile now, we still usually hit the store close to our house, so it is a pretty accurate source of data.

I've been taking Mucinex DM to keep the nagging cough under control.

Mucinex DM hasn't had any noticeable impact on my phlegm production. After a week, I'm just now starting to not cough and hack so much through the night that I'm getting a little sleep. Took a nap this afternoon and hacked up a huge glob of deep dark thick nastiness. I'm hoping that was the "core" of what's behind all of this and I'll now be on the upswing.

I've been so tired and easily winded and it finally hit me yesterday that my VO2 levels must be exceptionally low. If you're dealing with this same stuff, don''t overdo things as it could have really negative effects.
