Got a CDC survey addressed to Current Resident, ab two weeks ago. Was going to shred it whole but curiosity took hold. Opened, found two buck$. Did survey after they sent a reminder, sans cash. Not worried about data mining anymore with all the leaks in the past few years: OPM, banks, stores, etc. Anyway, $2 to toss into a Salvation Army bucket. ...wonder how many folks just tossed it..

I've been taking data mining surveys from Google for three years now and earned $130 in Google money. That works out to 32 movie rentals at $3.99 on my Roku.

They already mine it anyway, amirite!? Might as well make money from it.

They recently sent me an email of everywhere I went during the month of November. A list of every address, by the hour. They have that info at all times, but I've only gotten that email once. It makes you feel sick and really wonder why they sent it. Anyone else ever received that email?

Visiting a small town in AZ.
Within hours of arriving, I received an email from the rock shop across the street from the condo I am renting.
I had not used google maps or turned on my location, so I was curious with how they found me so fast.
I will head over there and ask what service they used.

Am I seriously the only one that's a bit miffed that the CDC is using tax dollars to bribe the people that most likely paid taxes to fund the CDC, to fill out a flipping survey and really no obligation to even fill it out when you just send the cash with the junk mail? Not to mention doing it with cash that even more likely is going to be sent straight to a landfill or recycling center?

I think Snowden was right. Can the CDC get DNA information from a fingerprint? They have a saying in the military "never volunteer for anything". Whats next, a DNA swab from every baby born?

Assuming that is wasted money is an easy argument to make, but if those tax dollars are part of their budget, they are going to utilize those dollars how they see fit regardless of how the tax payers feel about it. There is probably some value to the information they are looking to pin down with the survey and they felt it was valuable enough to send out $2 to get it. It sure seems wasteful, but we can't really make that judgement based on the info provided alone.

Your location is always "on" in some respect with your cell phone, or else you'd get no signal. Most any app installed on the phone is tracking your location, contacts, and photos (even something like a Sudoku app or a calculator) so they are all data mining you for info at all times.

The way those Google surveys work is that it watches were I go, then sends me surveys based on which stores it thought I was at. I can sit and eat lunch in my car in a large retail parking lot, and I'll sometimes get some survey asking if I was in some store. It's always some store that was in that parking lot.

I've been thinking about all this invasive tracking lately and I can't make up my mind how I feel about it.

I turn my location on every time I do something firearm or rocketry related & off when I'm done. No one sends me anything, ever. Heh.
