I bought a ridiculously large Hammer A3-41 Planer Jointer that weighs 1,000 lbs, and I need to make it mobile. Unfortunately, it has an irregular footprint, so it isn't terribly conducive to a standard tube-steel mobile base. My plan of the moment is to make a footprint out of steel plate, either 1/4" or 3/8" thick, and attach industrial casters to it. I've sent an email to AA targets to see if they might be willing to cut it for me, but if there is anyone else who can CNC cut steel plate in Northern Colorado, I'd certainly appreciate the reference.

What is the length and width of the material.

Very roughly, 28" x 26". For this thing:

The front is about two inches narrower than the rear. The cabinet is probably about 1/8" thick steel, with the base bent 90? to form a lip of about an inch all around the inside perimeter. Works fine when the whole thing is resting on the floor, but other owners who have mounted casters to their machines have advised that the front lip cannot take the weight and tends to bend inwards without being reinforced. I'm not brave enough to weld a piece of channel to it and void the warranty yet.

That thing is neato. I researched some stuff about it after you first posted. Congrats....it would be cool if you put some pics up of what you make with it later on.

I'm a little more south of you, but I have a CNC plasma cutter.

If you want to draw it up, I can cut it out for you.

I'll have to look, but I may even have a scrap of steel around.

(Probably mid Jan before I can get there though...)

An exceptionally generous offer. I've posted a quick sketch below, and I wouldn't feel bad if this looks like more than you'd want to take on as a side project. But if you did want to take it on, I'd be very glad to pay for both your time and the materials.

That should be cake to put together.

Let me see if I have a scrap of .25 or .375 that I can get it out of.

Cutting gussets out of 1/4".

Shakedown of the bigger machine we built, so excuse the mess and unfinished nature...
