View Full Version : Almost Like Retirement Heaven

Lewiston was just named as the #1 retirement location in Idaho. It's obvious why. Everything needed to sustain life is located in Lewiston in about a 1/3 mile stretch of a single road:

Everything I need to maintain the dogs, house, property, tractor, other machines and vehicles, plus other necessities like guns/ammo and underwear:
Home Depot
North40 (like a Murdoch's on steroids)
Sportsman's Warehouse

All the cheap but useful Chinese shit I'll ever need:
Harbor Freight

Food:
Panda Express
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Red Lobster (for those special occasions where upscale dining is warranted)

Hydration:
State Liquor Store

And when I need other food necessities like bacon and oranges (to combat scurvy) there are two groceries stores inside the same close radius.

If I can't find the basic building blocks of life at those places right next to Sportsman's is:
Staples - for computer stuff (to connect to my Amazon Prime account)

There are 2 or 3 assisted living/care facilities within Rascal Scooter range of all these places, too, though they're a block to the east of the main drag.

A person could actually be born, grow up, go to school, get a job and then retire having lived a completely fulfilled life and having never even heard of IKEA and never traveled more than a mile from home.

Amazing.

Been eyeing lewiston for a few years now along with a few other places more north, hopefully in the next 3-5 years I'll be making my way up there with the pops and wife in tow.

Definition of a Lewiston virgin... a 9 yr old girl who can outrun her 11 yr old brother. [ROFL2]

^^ Dude...you don't know how close to the truth that is. My family's a bunch a hillbillies from Alabama. Some of the people up here make them look downright sophisticated.

ETA: And, BTW...I didn't really mean for this to evolve into a serious discussion.

I don't know Carl. From the sounds of your first post it's starting to sound like you've turned into a big city boy with all that Lewiston has.

Q. Why do they sell so many button-fly jeans in Idaho?

A. Because the sheep can hear the zippers a mile away

No way I could take the winters. Probably a cool place, glad you have all the stuff you need nearby.

The winters here in the valley are far milder than Denver. Mild winters are one reason we moved here.

I really figured winters up there would be worse than here, based on being closer to the evil of winter.....Canada. It's all their fault.

Uh, that's the same as my neighborhood, and probably 100 others in the US.

ETA: I replied before reading the rest of the thread and getting the overall feel of the room, so to speak.

This was #1 retirement place "in Idaho". Plus, my guess is the housing prices are a big factor for the area for retirement folks.

I've heard strange stories of a former Coloradan in Lewiston who builds mail order Ikea in a large building on his property into the wee hours of the morning. [ROFL2]

Like here milder winters, but still a chance of snow and rain. Lots of rain and less traffic.

Lies and damn lies. I don't have a large building...

It rains constantly here in the winter. Like living in Seattle. I have to say it can be pretty dreary. If it isn't raining, it looks like it's gonna rain. But, I don't have to shovel rain. 3.21 inches for Dec so far according to my weather station rain gauge. On the other hand, only an inch or so of snow so far this winter.

A few years ago Idaho had the only heard of caribou in the lower 48, only about 16 of them. Do you know if that is still true? Also, have you seen/heard any wolves yet?

Bailey said those Caribou were TASTY.

Bailey Guns

No wolves for me yet. I was hoping for a glimpse or to hear one when I did the wilderness camping trip in September.

I heard not long ago that all remaining caribou in WA and ID (6, according to the Spokesman article) were being re-re-located back into Canada. Never seen one of those critters, either.

Irving

I wonder why they'd relocate them.

I think predation was the biggest problem...wolves and cougars.

Irving
12-30-2018, 15:25
Oh I know, when you have such a small population, predation can completely wipe out the herd, but it doesn't make sense to move them out to Canada. The species is not endanger of extinction, just that small population in that local area.
