Kudos to the runner for not just cashing in his chips. I am wondering what he did to kill the cat?

My family property west of Boulder was overrun by cats in the late 80's to late 90's, and this fact was one of primary reasons why I started carrying a sidearm starting at age 13 on an almost daily basis while outside.

I have seen some big cat spoor around Twin Lakes. I have never seen a big cat though. I have seen some big cat spoor around Pikes Peak, up Horsethief Park trail too. I guess he was in a thick brush area.
If the cat gets you by the back of the neck, you are probably doomed.

Young cat trying to get through its first winter. Good job to the runner. He's got one hell of a story to tell his grand kids.

I heard of a story in WY of a guy fending off another young cat with a chainsaw. Again.. They're young, hungry and trying to survive their first winter.

When I read that he strangled it, my first thought was this: "It's impossible to run with balls that big."

Denver zoo has a great picture outside the mountain lion exhibit - I think it's of a mother and child getting the typical tourist picture taken, and in the grass behind them is a mountain lion - probably eyeing the child.

I guess it wasn't until they looked at the picture later that they noticed the lion.

New twist in story.

The VPC and Gabby Giffords have denounced the killing as senseless. Wanting to know why the jogger couldn't have called 911 instead.

Fellow joggers are rallying round the as of yet unnamed man . Holding signs and chanting

My mom raised three mountain lions for her doctorate years ago, and she concurs it must have been very juvenile. She was wondering if something happened to its mother, since it apparently hadn't properly learned hunting.

Wow. Running aware of the sights and sounds in nature, and being in good physical condition probably saved his life. Had he not turned around the cat might have taken him down by the neck and the struggle could have been over very quickly with a very different outcome.

The CPW should do a full taxidermy mount of that kitty and offer or dedicate it to Mr. Kauffman.

Juvenile mtn lion or mtn lion with rabies. If someone can choke out a lion, he is tier of it's own.

From the coverage, the mountain lion's friends and family had pretty much eaten it before the CPW folks got back to the scene.

So, a big bobcat with a lack of hunting/killing skills.
Not quite the Sampson story that seems to be circulating.

I don't want to wrestle with a pissed off 8 pound house cat, much less a wild one 5 times that size. I know a guy that ended up with over a hundred stitches as the result of a bobcat encounter, so I'm not gonna bag on this guy. Yeah, it wasn't a 100 pound adult, but it wasn't a joke either.

I've been on the receiving end of a pissed off 8 pound house cat and it's not pretty.

But also not pretty for the cat when they land at the bottom of the basement stairs at a high rate of speed. (There were no animals harmed during this particular incident)

My mom's heard that it was about 40 pounds, so still a very, very young cat. She speculates that means its mother was killed and that it never properly learned to hunt. That's increased by the fact that its stomach only had a small amount of vegetative material, and since they're obligate carnivores that basically means it was starving. Likely its siblings were too, hence why they ate it after its death.

Anybody else see this? Original story here: https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/14/us/mountain-lion-attack-colorado-runner/index.html

"A necropsy revealed the mountain lion was about 4 to 5 months old and weighed between 35 and 40 pounds when alive, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife."

Not to sound insulting but all the headlines made it sound like this guy is a superhero for fighting it of but that sounds incredibly small for a mountain lion. Almost big bobcat size. I'm sure it was still a danger at 35-40 lbs as some dogs of that size could be lethal, but imagine if it were a 200lb male! There's little chance he would have survived that encounter.

I've seen full grown mountain lions in the wild on multiple occasions and I've always been incredibly fascinated with them. I would never want to tussle with one. They are incredible animals.

It was obviously a young cat. If it was an adult he never would have killed it.

Ever met a truly feral house cat with a chip on its shoulder? A 9lb house cat can tear you up. A 35lb young lion is no joke.

I remember first seeing this story in the Reader's Digest and later finding an article in the Denver Post.
At the time, my Everyday Carry Knife was a Swiss Army Knife.

1998: 28 April. Andy Peterson, 24, an experienced hiker from Littleton, was attacked in Roxborough State Park, Colorado, while hiking alone in the 3,000 acre park on the Carpenter Peak trail about 2 to 3 miles west of the visitor center.

The hiker came upon the lion, who was "chewing on a stick", while descending a trail. A 30 minute standoff ended when the lion attacked as the hiker attempted to "retreat up the trail". The lion retreated after it was stabbed once with the 3" blade of a Swiss army knife, attacked again, and then left after the hiker "jabbed his thumb in the lion's eye". The hiker received deep cuts to his head and face, and was hospitalized in fair and stable condition.

Jim Jones, an area wildlife manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, said that the lion probably wasn't driven away by the hiker's action, but instead "just lost interest", since lions are used to receiving wounds from their prey

Wildlife officials believe the reason the cat attacked was that it was young and learning how to hunt, based on the description provided by Peterson. (Denver Post, 5/1/98, B-01; 5/6/98, B-03)

Still got the scars!Seriously.

We had a cat that we found as a kitty in the AZ desert. She was the devil.

She somehow survived all the things that normally eat cats in the desert even though she spent 95% of her time roaming around. She lived to be like 21. And no one in the house could walk around barefoot for 21 years because if she was around, she'd attack your feet. She hated bare feet for some reason. And hands draped over the back of the sofa. And dogs. And other cats. And birds. And being petted.

Not sure if she liked anything actually. Oh, yeah she did. She loved killing other animals. Even rabbits bigger than her.

Don't trust cats.
