So I went into Cabela's today to return a rain jacket I'd bought from them with the receipt in hand. The woman at Customer service looked at me and said she couldn't return it because it was purchased too long ago, December 2015. Yes I'd bought it 3 years ago but only used it once and the shoulder tore out. Manager arrived to tell me the warranty period has changed. What used to be a Life Time Warranty for Cabela's brand purchases with the receipt, is now 30-90 days with the receipt. Unacceptable.

Store manager shows up who can't even distinguish what camo pattern the jacket is in then tells me they can't refund the value of the item for what I paid on the receipt but can get me a new jacket or a gift card. I took the gift card as I did not want to get another crappy product with a 30 day warranty. Spoke to corporate through email and the store is supposed to warranty original purchases under the old warranty if it was bought before January 1st 2019 when the new warranty took effect.

I will not be making purchases again at Cabela's. They're stuff is way too expensive to not have a long warranty and that was always the benefit of spending the money on a quality product. They'll soon be the new Dick's selling high priced items at Walmart quality.

Yeah, I stopped shopping there when Bass Pro took over.

Glad you told me about this. I wasn’t aware of the change and have always bought cabelas brand for the warranty. No longer...

The warranty, which they do not know, which is different from what I was told from the Managers at the Lone Tree Cabela's. The first manager told me 30-60 days, then the store manger told me 30 days. On the Cabela's website it states with a receipt you have 90 days to return a product.

Yep. Same thing happened at L.L. Bean. They used to be a place with high priced goods but a decent warranty. They changed the warranty not long after my purchase too. I really miss companies that wanted to gain long time customers. I can no longer consider warranties when I buy things. Thanks for the Cabela's warranty intel, one more reason.

This is not your father's Cabela's.

ETA: Funny...I was gonna mention LL Bean turned out kinda the same way.

I’ve had a bad run with boots and cabelas. I’ve bought quite a few pairs of their work boots and they all end up leaking and falling apart . Went with danners once , had to warranty those with danner. I have a set of Merrell’s now , and they are holding up OK , but starting to separate too. Sucks. I’ve always preferred Cabelas over Bass pro , but. Is there is no reason to buy the cabelas brand over anything else. SOL either way.

Maybe Vortex will start a clothing line.

I started a thread a while back about Danner boots and how, in my opinion, their quality wasn't what it once was. I've switched to Rocky's. Used to buy my sheepskin slippers from Cabela's and LL Bean but no longer. Just not as "wicked good" as they once were. I can get the same thing cheaper from lots of places so might as well not pay Cabela's or LL Bean prices for the same low quality.

This is starting to sound like the Bear Creek Arsenal thread.

Fyi, on this topic it appears REI's lifetime warranty to members has changed to a 1 year warranty. What a crock.

I'll play devil's advocate.

The amount of people who abuse the life time warranty is ridiculous. Selling old LL Bean clothes on Ebay, specifically for return, was a thing. Ever go to an REI garage sale?

I'm sure the changes in return policies is also driven by the declining quality. Sucks really. I'd pay more for better quality.

I've yet to own a pair of boots in my life that weren't complete garbage. Well, that's not quite true, but most of the stuff I've bought is crap. I know there are companies with good warranties and boots that will last decades, they just cost $600. I should just dive in and spend that because I'm sure I'll spend that much in garbage boots over the next 20 years anyway.

Ive had great luck with old Cabela's clothing and boots. Have worn them for over a decade and they still work great. That's why I spent the high price on their clothing and footwear because it lasted and worked amazing. No clue where I'll end up shopping for this level of equipment. Sportsman's doesn't have the inventory Cabela's did.

I am done with Cabelas after the last time we were there picking up a shotgun my dad purchased online. He was filling out their electronic 4473 and at the end, it popped up like 5-10 different names and address of people asking if he knew any of those people. Having my own FFL, I asked what this was about? The counter guy told us that it is a new law that is required by CBI for them to ask and that if my dad knew anyone of those people on that list, it might be considered a straw purchase. He said that his name and address matched others in the area but they were not even close to my dads information. At the end of it, they charged $10.51. Again, I asked why they were charging more than what the state actually charges and they said I was wrong, it was $10.51 and not $10.50. I asked if they charged for a CC fee and they said no. I am probably just being nit picky but don't misinform your customers with false information.

I still have a pair of Red Wing hiking boots (honest full on expedition hikers) that I got in high school. Spendy, even back in the day (I think they were ~ $120 in 1983), but nearly unkillable. Unfortunately, my feet have gotten larger in the last 10 years or so, and they are pretty tight.

They charged $10.51 and not $10.50 - what the state actually charges. a $.01 mark up!

Rolls Royce had a lifetime warranty at one time.
An acquaintance bought one in England, shipped it to Europe and had an axle break in Italy.
He called the dealer. A team flew over with a replacement and fixed it overnight.
When he asked a week later what he owed, the dealer simply said "Rolls Royce axles do not break."
