I'm not sure what to make of this article. It's cringe inducing on a few levels to me. Maybe it's worth a discussion, maybe it isn't.

Why do they need guns for protection? They keep telling us that's what the police are for.

It's called cognitive dissonance.

It appears they are starting to realize that the police exist to enforce laws not alleviate their fears.

Nothing in the article mentions Antifa which has been more threatening and destructive. I still like our odds they look like they will run if someone starts to shoot back

"He pointed to the white supremacist who?stabbed two men?on a Portland train in 2017 and the neo-Nazi who killed someone when he drove his car into a crowd of protesters?in?Charlottesville.

?There?s been a lot of people on the far right talking about carrying out attacks like that,? he said. ?So it?s something that you absolutely want to be on the lookout?for.?"

One extremist fearing another extremist.

"Strange, whose car is covered in political bumper stickers, usually has protest signs stashed in her trunk. She said she got a sign from her car that said ?De-ICE NORCOR? and set it on her table while she?ate.

Later that day, she started receiving messages from?friends.

The Sherman County sheriff, who uses NORCOR to house local inmates, had posted a picture of her from that morning?on the department?s official Facebook page?saying her actions were??disgusting.?"

She behaves badly and then is fearful when the favor is returned?

Here is what stands out to me.

1) Rise in right wing violence. I feel like this is more leftist narrative than truth, but if I ever use the word "right" to define myself then there is no way I can look at this claim without bias. I browsed through the fight in the comments and someone was throwing out some stats that showed a rise of media coverage worthy attacks, but all numbering in the tens. Going from 12 to 31 events in a year IS a rise, but is it statistically relevant? Does it matter? The same argument is used to point out how rare school shootings are, but I've yet to meet anyone who'd be bothered by never having a school shooting again, no matter their view on the raw statistics.

2) Some of the common justifications for carrying a gun used in the article seem to fall flat out of the mouths of my political opposites. What that means is that either I don't really buy the argument if I really think about it, or it really is a bad justification.

This doesn't change the way I feel about anything, just thought it was interesting to me. It probably isn't for others.

That was my favorite part. It's not like she had that sign in her living room and someone took a picture through her window. She was in a very public place and went out of her way to display her feelings. Why should she be upset at people's reactions when she was out looking to get reactions?

"Bright pink hair and tattoos...she is easily identified" Did someone make surveillance for others easier today?

"Armed queers don't get bashed." OK

As long as they follow the four rules and are not violent criminals, I don't actually care what their political point of view is. I hope some of these people begin supporting Constitutional Carry and repeal of the NFA.

I am always supportive of somebody deciding to be responsible for their own defense.

Part of me wants to yell at these people, call them hypocrites and turn them over to their fellow travelers for social destruction.

But part of me also wants to say "Welcome to the party, pal ... now you gonna stop voting to take OUR rights away?"

Purely as a gun owner I agree with the second part, the first part well I already call them out

BUT

they likely won't stop voting for more taxation, diversity BS, "green" programs, curtailing freedom of religion and speech, etc........

This is part of their "Rights for me, but not for thee" mindset. They feel it's ok for them to defend themselves against threats, but not for "those people". It's an attitude that's been common among the liberal elite basically forever (Hollywood libs are a great example) that is filtering down to these self righteous activists. I personally would love it if everyone took responsibility for their own defense, it would make our society a safer place without as much need for government intrusion.

We've done this thread several times. I used to be shocked at the outright hypocrisy too.

Most people fundamentally misunderstand Liberals. They do not genuinely believe most of the bullshit that exits their mouths and every single one of them consistently puts his self-interest above others. This is why all the grand schemes involve our paychecks and not generous donations from the conscientious betters. When I hear them talk IRL I just assume they are lying and am seldom disappointed.

There are lots of Liberal gun owners who are damned scared of the society they are creating and realize they aren't last on the menu (after us) as promised.

In 2019, and all periods since the Civil War, an everyday person would be a fool to prioritize fear of political violence over the fear of "casual" crime. It doesn't make statistical sense. When the above isn't true we are likely in another hot Civil War but for now the avg. Boulder/Denver wealthy white Liberal has more to fear walking down the street than from any "Right wing" group AND THEY KNOW THIS.

And no, they won't stop voting for gun control because it is a tool to disarm their political opposition and gain a monopoly on violence. Notice the focus on black rifles in spite of 400 homicides a year? Who has black rifles?
