View Full Version : Piece of tape over your rifle barrel
I've seen professional hunters like Steven Rinella that keep a piece of duct tape over their rifle barrel while hunting to keep all the crud out. They just shoot through the tape and report zero accuracy issues. Could you still do that with a suppressor? I imagine the physics would be similar to a neoprene wipe. Do you think there is any danger, physical or legal, of putting tape over your can to keep junk out?
Cheap rubber condoms will do the job.
I always wrap a piece of scotch tape over the muzzle when hunting. It works and is a whole lot better than getting snow or mud in the barrel when out in the field.
I don’t see how it could possibly be a problem.
Thanks. I'll be sure to try it when I actually get my cans.

Why wait ?
I’ve got some extra BCA barrels if you want a tier 6 test. Make sure to use dollar store duct tape for the full low cost test experience.
I'm not worried about damaging a rifle barrel, I was specifically asking about using tape over a can.
I've never tried taping over my can.... especially in case of emergency.
Discovered, too late, the house guest didn't put a new roll of toilet paper in the dispenser.....

And when the wife finds them in your hunting bag “Honest honey, they are for my rifle barrel to keep the crud out”...... That will go over good.
l?ve shot through several AR plastic muzzle caps with no ill effects at the range.

Saran Wrap or a part of a sandwich bag taped on. Protects the barrel from rain or snow while hunting and the pressure blows it off before the projectile touches it. Always do it on my hunting rifles.
^ yeah, not sure where you guys are finding condoms that will fit and stay on a rifle barrel.. ;)

Junior size.
Same reason military, at least in the Marines, we put a cap over the barrel deployed to protect from water and contaminants.
Trojan extra large, just to make sure. Ribbed to make sure.

Yes, I use a piece of electrical tape when hunting suppressed. No POI shift at the ranges I hunt at. I haven’t tested it, but purging the can with inert gas might also reduce first round pop.
After a few “fun” competitions involving walking 24+ hours, I always cover my muzzle. Shit always gets in there.
Water balloons work pretty good, unless you have a larger than normal... barrel.

Lubricated or dry?
Dry of course. You need to supply your own lubrication.

A little reciprocating bolt action.

Its fool proof. You cover the buzzer with the tape, and deliver to the back address.
...that way, you keep your muzzle clear.

Keep in mind that a suppressor gets hot pretty quickly so I would avoid something sticky like duct tape that could make a mess from the adhesive residue. For hunting it wouldn't be an issue as you're not likely to take more than two or three shots in a short time, but at the range it could be. I like scotch tape because it offers no resistance and is easy to peal and clean off.
This year I hunted big game with a suppressor but didn't use any tape. I should have. I hunted a burn area where the ash was muddy and slick and I slipped several times. The muzzle hit the mud once and fortunately I caught it before it plugged with debris. I was able to clean it with a q-tip. I won't neglect the tape again.

I put black electrical tape over the end of my hunting rifles every year to keep crud out. The adhesive of the tape holds the tape on securely but wipes off easily when I remove the tape - no residue or damage to rifle metal/bluing.
My hunting partners tend to resort to using small balloons over their rifle muzzles when it's rainy or snowing.
I've just used gun oil. Guess that's why I have kids.

There are a lot of replies. The simple answer really should be not top put your junk in it in the first place. You won't need a condom if you follow that rule.

Irving, you mentioned Steve Rinella in the original post. He actually discusses this in episode 150 about half way through. I really like that guy- great show and podcast.

I'm 90% sure he talks about it in this episode.
He recently mentioned it, but not with using a suppressor. He hasn't quite been red pulled about suppressors, but he's getting there.

In spite of "subtle innuendo follows", I was serious about blue painters tape.
I just press it over my... can... and it keeps the filth out... and reduces first round pop
Thanks for the true answers everyone. I think someone else got a real answer in there as well.

I need to go to another gun how for more of the muzzle caps, I am out of them. Last time I payed Like $ 5.00 for a ten pack. I’ve shot through them, gave some away and misplaced a couple when I remembered take them off before firing.

There may be better pricing, even on amazon... but I chose this after searching my dealer price, and amazon was better. Of course the more you buy, the cheaper they are per peice.
