Who's playing it? It's an AAA title that is free to play for PC, PS & Xbox. It's a Battle Royale format first person shooter that's been out for a week and has 25mil players already.

I've been playing it off and on for about a week or so and finally got some decent time behind the wheel over this last weekend. It's a very smooth playing game with a few small bugs here and there but otherwise is incredible polished for what amounts to a free to play beta. Considering how big Fortnite is it's the obvious comparison but the game-play and feel is completely different. The lack of building and requirement to use static cover will feel familiar to those coming from Call of Duty and similar games which was a welcomed departure for me. I never could quite get the hang of "Oh, I'm being shot at... I need to build wall first!" idea behind Fortnite. Don't get me wrong, that's a fun game but the decades of FPS in me just wants to go HAM on attackers and dish out damage which usually is a losing proposition in a game like Fortnite that puts so much emphasis on building.

I digress.

If you haven't yet installed (only about 20GB) and played this game I highly recommend taking it for a spin. I've paid for much worse games than this one. If it's trajectory as far as improvement and growth emulates anything similar to Fortnite this is going to be an amazing game when you consider what Fortnite was when it launched versus where it is now. Apex Legends is already a solid contender and it's only just gone live.

Do you have to pay for the online account to play?

Nope. Well, that assumes you already have Xbox Live or whatever Sony's version is. Not sure on PC as I don't play it on PC so it's possible? This is kind of a given for the consoles though as you can't play any games online w/o their premium paid membership. This is a BR style game ONLY and includes no campaign or single-player mode at this point. It's just teams of 3 playing 20 other teams of three until only one team stands.

Other than that, no money involved unless you want more character/weapon skins than what your earned credits will purchase. The rumor is they'll announce something similar to Fortnite's Battle Pass in the months to come which will include challenges and ways to earn more credits/XP quicker but as of now I think the only way you can support devs is to buy credits to use for more skins and what not. There's a couple of characters to unlock but I'm already nearly halfway to unlocking one via the credits I've earned from playing and I think someone told me that when you reach a certain level they unlock anyway so I'm in no hurry to spend any of my credits at this point. I'm perfectly content to play with the defaults and every now and then I get a skin from a Apex package or whatever they're called.

I don't have the PS version of Xbox live (I also don't know what it's called). I know it sounded like a silly question, but there ARE games that you can play with others online without that service, but I only know of one.

Looks like you do not need PS Plus to play.

I used to love FN but since the release of CoD, I haven't played it much. FN was a fantastic idea but they need some sort of AI to put players in the same skill level in games together. It just got to the point that it wasn't fun anymore because people were way to fast/good to keep up with. I used to be able to win about 1/5 games but that number is now like 1/20. I fair much better on CoD for some reason. I will DL Apex tonight and see what it's all about but CoD is more my style.

It's odd because CoD used to be my jam. I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't suck. I got into Fortnite only recently (6mos ago?) and really liked that style as well even though building isn't my cup of tea. When the new CoD was announced to have a BR mode I thought to myself: Self, this is your jammy jam! Then, played it during the beta. Ooof. What a shit game. I really, really wanted to like it and even had low expectations and was still let down. It was a mess and didn't play well at all. I gave it a good chance and, much like the more recent versions of CoD, decided it wasn't for me.

So far I really like Apex Legends though. To me it feels like what Blackout should have felt like. I'm sure since you've been playing Blackout a lot more than me and are more used to it than me you'll disagree most likely but I feel like Blackout was rushed and unpolished. This game, even though it's just gone public and is a free-to-play beta, feels more fluid and polished to me already.
