View Full Version : New studies suggest Alzheimer's may be linked to gum disease.

This article talks about some studies that hint at Alzheimer's being linked to gum disease. I thought the interesting part was how much money is spent on Alzheimer's research without really getting anywhere, hence people trying new things.

That'll be a weird damn deal if they find out later on for sure that is what was causing it.

Interesting: Microbe, exotoxin, inflammation response and variant protein.

When I hear phrases like “may be linked” I think of “We need more grant money!”

^ may be linked or may prevent.
Yeah.

I remember while ago that video game MAY help prevent it as well.

What? It's not aluminum cookware and the aluminum chloride in antiperspirants? [panic]

Agreed "may be linked" is meaningless at best and dishonest at worst.

I guarantee you EVERY person that has Alzheimers also has gums ... bam "linked".

I think you should read the article. I was trying to be vague in my title because I don't understand that stuff and if I try to sound too knowledgeable, someone will just come along and call me out. I'll let the article do the talking.

The article is interesting but is filled with a lot of "could be ... might be" etc (as most scientific articles for the masses are). We just have to be careful with correlation and cause, that's all. And since we currently have a crisis of unrepeatable in peer reviewed scientific papers we have to be double careful.

That said I'll definitely be flossing before going to bed ... if I remember to :p

Now what's kinda funny is, if we take this "Alzheimers may be caused by gum disease" at face value (for the sake of discussion), one has to wonder if BETTER dental care is actually a problem because people with no teeth are less susceptible to gum disease.

Sounds like every science related article I've ever read. Lots of ifs.

I only clicked because the title was abbreviated on my device.

I wanted to see how it was linked to gum.

When I first saw this article I thought about all my friends on here, and how old you all are. I just assumed this would be of direct interest to you all. You're welcome.

I was going to respond with hostility and fire.
But, I forgot what you said that made me feel that way.

Not surprising, there are forms of heart disease that are caused by mouth/gum bacteria.

I've read some articles recently that provide evidence that Alzheimer's may also be transmissible. There's an astonishing number of cases where caregivers of Alzheimer's patients with no family history of the disease eventually develop it, sometimes years after the person they were caring for had passed.

That’s downright scary.

Gum disease can also cause lung disease, I am currently recovering from lung surgery to remove an infection that started in my teeth, nearly died.

And I have a double whammy, I worked in an Alzheimers and dementia ward for a while, about 25 years ago so I am probably screwed.

I haven't yet read the study but it would be premature to substitute correlation with causation. Gum disease, as stated, is also linked to heart disease. But then again, people with poor oral health are probably neglecting themselves in other ways, making a statistical correlation in any circumstance.

One piece of new research on the disease is that the amyloid protiens (that build up in the brain) are not, in fact, a waste product. They are a primitive immune system. So important, that if you were to remove all the amyloids from your body, you would die in a matter of hours, or even minutes. So, it could in fact, be a primative auto-immune disease at the root of it. So too, could long term infections potentially have side effects (like Gum Disease). Who really knows. Many possibility's, but one truth: Amyloid's are a key component of our ill understood primative immune system, that exists below, and separate from the immune system you learned of in schools. Something goes completely funky with them as a component of the disease.
