View Full Version : Have You Seen The Prices of New Beds?

Wife and I have been looking for a new bed. We're sleeping on a 15+ year old Sleep Number bed. It's a king and there's a huge gap in the middle where the two air mattresses meet and it's just annoying as can be.
Yesterday we stopped by Walmart and there's a Mattress Firm store next door. Went inside and the sticker shock was worse than looking at new cars! I had no idea you could pay $5500 for JUST a mattress. An entire bed (frame, foundation, mattress) can easily cost $11000 or more. Of course there are less expensive beds...but who's buying $11000 beds? And there wasn't just one model at that price...there were lots of them.
The lady in the store said, "Don't let the price bother you. We have no interest financing for 60 months on most of our beds." What? You now have to finance a bed for 5 years? I must be way outta touch.
I'd say the average "Good" quality mattress was somewhere in the $1500 - $2500 range for a king.
Unbelievable.
Don’t shop there. We bought our last mattress from Costco. It was under $1K and is great.

We've had a King mattress from Costco for the past 4 years and it's been excellent. I believe it was just under $1k and well worth the price.

I can't afford to buy anything there. But they have lots of beds to test drive.

lol
Bought my last mattress from Amazon (one of the Zinus ones), and the one before that from Our (which lasted about 10 years). Think we spent less than $600 combined for them. Left a lot for a pretty cool frame...
Sounds like someone is missing IKEA.

We have been looking for a full for our guest bedroom and like you said prices are insane. Even the cheapies are 300$. Unfortunately costco only sells queens and king.
I'm too much of a cheap bastard for a new mattress. If the house ever burns down, I'm going to have to start googling for "hail damaged mattresses".
Many scam industries out there though. Weddings, Funerals, Real Estate and Mattresses. If it wasn't for the 70-95% profit margins, people would actually have to be gainfully employed. [Coffee]

Actually looking at them now.
We saw a set that was $42,000.
Who the F would pay $42k for a bed set?
I bought my last two mattresses from mattress firm. The first one about 10 years ago, I went a few days after memorial day at opening hours and asked the coffee swilling gentleman about the type I was looking for (extra firm) and got directed to the back for a discontinued unit waiting delivery I liked it. I inquired about a scratch and dent and agreed to pick it up at the warehouse and dispose of my own old mattress and box springs for about $700.
The second one was last year and I went several times to try out various units. On memorial day, inquired about their sale which was the "$1300" model that they'd jacked the price up from the $1000 the previous month. I told the sales lady I wasn't looking for any freebies like the adjustable frame or box springs. After some polite back and forth we settled on $600 picked up at the store, no disposal but she'd have to check with her boss. I told her call me the next day since it was a holiday and they'd be busy. I had a voicemail an hour later confirming the deal.
I have no real loyalty to the place, they were simply next door to where I was going anyways.

I've heard some bad stuff about Mattress Firm over the years. I bought from Innomax and have no complaints...not cheap though.

I got a queen sized mattress from amazon for under 200 delivered. It came in one of those vaccuum packed wraps. Very easy to handle.
I think our next will be one of the online mattresses. Maybe Tuft and Needle but definitely something with a one year no questions asked return policy.

Was absolutely unimpressed with MF, aggressive sales staff like a used car lot very small selection and overpriced.
Denver Mattress was just the opposite, pleasant staff, great selection.

The lady at MF in Lewiston was pleasant enough but she did remind me of a car salesman. I knew she was full of crap when she told me even Dave Ramsey recommended their 0%/60 month financing.
I told her I've listened to Ramsey enough to know that's bullshit. She pretty much just talked to Mrs BG after that.

Denver Mattress...you just reminded me that we got our current bedding from there, and we like it fine. Great service as well.
The Innomax stuff is in storage.

Sam's Club had some Serta limited edition Queen sets for $598. Don't know what the Kings went for. They were really nice, I was kind of wishing I was in the market for new mattresses after lying down on one ...

We've had great luck with Denver Mattress. Wife and I are using a 12 yeard old pillow-top Denver Matress and it's still super comfy. Have bought a ccouple more over the years for the kids (who are pretty much young adults now). I'd buy another again in a heartbeat.

Same. Doctor's Choice and I believe it was like $400ish at the time. Going on 15 years now and, like mentioned above, if we have a fire or something I will be sad when I'm forced to replace it with what all is out there today. I think the popular option is the bed-in-a-box options but there's just so many and the reviews always vary from "worse POS ever and my entire neighborhood burnt down as a result" to "this mattress saved my life when a brown bear broke in with ill intentions and cured my wife's cancer all while solving world hunger" and just about everything in between with prices ranging from $150-$1500 for seemingly the exact same thing. Oh, and you need all new frames and such. Eesh.
FWIW most mattress review sites are affiliated with the brands they recommend (read: kickbacks). Two notable exceptions are http://consumerreports.org, of course, and https://www.sleeplikethedead.com/, the latter has a useful selector to help narrow down choices.
Bought my last two kings from Goodwill. They were cheap and have been great.
My King mattress was a Costco purchase about 5 years ago and it has been great. Mattress and box springs were about $700 OTD, IIRC...and I had been looking at the same set at American Furniture Warehouse for $1,000+.

MF has way too many stores, sometime right across the street from each other, they probably need the massive profit margin to maintain all the stores.

My guess is that mattress stores and tires shops are both huge money laundering fronts. They're on every corner.
It's a king and there's a huge gap in the middle where the two air mattresses meet and it's just annoying as can be. is the foam divider missing between the two air bladders? We have a king air number bed and there's no gap to speak of.

MF's official explanation is that they bought out a few and it's competitors in the recent years, and just simply changed the front of all stores to MF. Sounds like a waste of rent to me.

It's there. As a matter of fact we've replaced it twice. Hasn't resolved the problem.

We bought our previous mattress for about $1800. It lasted about a year before it started to sag and hurt our backs. Of course it was not enough for the manufacturer to take it back, so we suffered for another 3 years.
We ended up buying a purple mattress back in November and it feels great to both of us. Don't know how long it will last, but it has been the most comfortable mattress we have ever had and only about $1150 with the base.
