Well unfortunately my English setter developed what appears to be bone cancer according to the vets and is declining rapidly, flying home now to be with him and the family.

so I can prepare myself, what have you guys used in the past when it became necessary to put your dog down, cremation services, etc?

here is Bullet in his prime:77604

Sorry for your loss. I lost Smithie about 8 years ago to the same thing.
I took her to a vet that helped her go to sleep and too care of cremation. Just as well I was a basket case that night.

I have heard of Home to Heaven service mentioned a few times here.

We used Caring Pathways a few years ago and they came to the house to perform the euthanasia. It was nice to have it out in the yard where our pup was comfortable and it was much nicer than being at the vet's office. They took care of the cremation services and everything.

Sorry you have to go through this.

Looks like he's had a great life, sorry for his and your pain.

We used Caring Pathways as well. Made a really hard time a little less stressful, for us as well as for our pup.

Uncanny similarity. Our pup Tango is rapidly dying from bone cancer too. She saw an oncologist yesterday, no good options. We’re trying to keep her comfortable. Sorry about Bullet. This just sucks.

Someone mentioned it could be due to roundup or other pesticides. I am extra carefull now with the grass.

We used Home to Heaven. They were fabulous. Very caring, gentle. One shot to relax and one to send them on their way. No need to take them anywhere and make them more uncomfortable Very peaceful all in our living room. We opted to have the ashes returned, but you don't have to.

Sorry to hear about your pup. I hate these threads. The silver lining is they always force us to remember some of the good times we had with our friends.

We had a friend who was a vet who always helped us out. As far as cremation, it may sound odd but the funeral home in Marshdale (between Evergreen and Conifer) cremates pets. Your pet will receive pretty much the same standard of care as a person would during the process. It was always important to us to get the cremains of our dogs returned. Some places do bulk cremations and you just get a portion of the cremains. We never liked that. We were even allowed to inspect and place the pet in the very clean cremation chamber. The pet is also placed with a numbered metal disk that is assigned by their tracking system. Price is very reasonable and is by weight. It's been a while since we've used them so I don't recall what the exact price was.

I know it's a ways for you but it's a great service if you're so inclined:

Caring Pathways for us too. Home to Heaven doesn't come as far south as Parker.

And I'm starting to think there's someting to that stuff about RoundUp, pesticides, fertilizers, Weed-B-Gon, etc. We lost our first dog in August to kidney failure and a lot of weird skin shit, and our second dog has an oral tumor the size of a golf ball. I ain't NEVER putting no more shit in our back yard, and not getting another dog until that crap's had a couple years to fade away.

When I had to take my dog to the vet to be put down (had bone cancer as well) my vet took care of all the services/cremation for me.

as for the round up thing.. I never used any chemicals on my lawn and my dog got bone cancer, I had a rottweiler and bone cancer is actually one of the number one killers of rotts and other large dogs for that matter. Back in the day in my early twenties I used to be licensed to spray lawns in Minnesota which required me to take a pretty extensive test on using herbicides and pesticides with the state in order to be licensed. Basically round up and other broadleaf killers are very toxic.. while wet. The worse place you can get it is on your inner thighs, that part of your body will absofb it like a sponge. You could actually drink the stuff without issue as your stomach/gut lining will not absorb the chemical in to your system other than the petroleum products that are used as the carrier would probably make you instantly hurl your guts out. Once the broadleaf killer/round up has dried on the surface of the grass the part that is toxic to animals/humans has evaporated off in to the atmosphere.

basically, no one or animal should be near the grass while its still wet after spraying.. after dry its no big deal. Thats why we had toput the signs in the yard after spraying.

Home for Heaven(referred by Jer) was who we contacted last year for Buddy. They don't come out this far but referred us to an outfit out of Denver who would.

Guy was great, well worth the extra few dollars. Would recommend both outfits. Mrs bo is looking for business card for outfit we used.

Well we took him to CSU for further testing and diagnosis and the outlook was very poor so we had to make the very tough decision.

Going to miss you Bullet. Go get those birds!

I'm sorry, my friends. You will always have the memories however, and therefore they're never forgotten.

Regrets, you know they're running through fields, swimming in the lake and sleeping in the sun, like all good dogs do.

One thing I will say about the loss of a dog (or any pet) IMHO. Burying them on your own property is comforting or cathartic as heck. If you have the space, think about burying them on your property (screw the law). Many folks don't have the space, so no disrespect to those who don't or anything. Do what you got to do.

I have two dogs buried here and it helped me mentally to actually lower them into their grave, wrapped in their blankets from their own beds, and bury them. It sucked at the time, but I did it and they are here with me. I won't live here forever, but this is where they lived their life and they will stay here forever. Just my 2 cents.

I recently put down my 14 year old dog. He had problems with fluid around the heart. Suspected cancer but testing didn't show us a lot. We did it in the vet office with me and my son holding Cody. Vet injected a sedative and then followed with the lethal dose. Team at the Monument Vet Clinic was excellent. They have a special room for that purpose, which isn't as clinical as the examination rooms. They took care of the cremation as well and I had Cody's ashes back in about two weeks. We'll bury it in the spring and plant a tree over the top of him.

Sorry for your loss. I like your idea of planting a tree over the cremains.

Maybe we're weird, but we keep all of our dog cremains in little urns (not all are real urns...just items used for that purpose) that remind us of something each dog really enjoyed. Like our first Corgi rescue, Bobbi. We called her "Spoon Licker". Most dogs like to lick whatever you have off a spoon. Bobbi didn't know how because she spent the first 6 years of her life in a puppy mill cage. The first time I tried to get her to lick a spoon she was terrified. After a little coaxing, though, she got over her fear and could almost lick both sides of the spoon at once. She quickly became the master. When she passed we put her cremains and a few special mementos into a small, wooden recipe box and I attached a spoon to the top as a handle.

We keep them all in various spots around the house where we get to see them whenever we walk past. Kinda helps to keep their memories alive.

Damn Brudda sorry about your Pup, prayers for peace sent.

There's a vet on Bridge before Bloomgars that I've used and would reccomend. When that time comes stay with your pup, its the last time you cam show your love and loyalty to the pup who has given you their entire life of loyalty and love. Its hard to do but i stare into thier eyes and tell them how much they've ment to me...

We cremate but don't keep ashes, we get paw prints taken on a clay disc that we keep and put into our storage chest. To be honest though i can't look at them.
