Drugs are bad...
You ask that question, but you answered yourself in a way, this is Florida home of the "Face eater" and other strange and bizarre tales.
Your link and title of the story had me also ????? but when you read the article the spaghetti sauce was to cover up the fire he was trying to set. So in a way, very forward thinking there on the fire-starters part..................
No sure if the fire inspector would have said, "Well the fire was started by negligence in cooking spaghetti to eat even though the home owner was at work. Move along nothing to see here." that was a hindsight on fire-starters part.

I recently listened to a podcast where some documentary writer, that lives there, was shitting all over Florida (Miami specifically) and explaining that there isn't any real economy there except retirement, drugs, and fraud. I need to get some Florida natives to listen to see what is true and what is over blown.

I lived in Florida for 17 years before coming out to Colorado. We would have called that 'Tuesday'.
When I was a Florida-based gun store flunky, there was once a lull in range fire that occurred right at the time a customer finished up a conversation with his friend with the line "...And that's why I want to f@#k a manatee."

Was only a Florida resident for 3 years but I'll take Florida -- even with the resident kooks and Demoncrats of Dade and West Palm Beach Counties -- over California, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Minnesota, Wisconsin ... I think you get the picture.
What is the industry in Florida? If you aren't retired, a real estate agent, or running coke, what can you do for money out there? Are there any large scale industry things like manufacturing?

There is a lot of ag in Central Florida. Not just food, but industrial forestry in support of the paper industry. Lots of fast growing scrub pine. North Florida's centered around Jacksonville, which has a heavy shipping industry. The I-4 corridor is all about the rat (Disney). Tampa has, well, strip clubs and Ybor city, I suppose. Big universities anchoring each section. Lots of medical; doctors, device suppliers, etc... We did such a good job of extracting income from tourists that there is no income tax.
Florida's a corrupt place where money makes all the difference. We would probably let you build a small housing community on a foundation of manatee carcasses if you gave the city enough money and agreed to name it after whatever ecology it destroyed, like "Mangrove Village" or "Coral Cove". Weird happens because all the ingredients are there; it's hot, the days are long, you're surrounded by water on 3 sides, everywhere is full of primordial creatures that could eat you and live in your community retention pond, feels like you've reached the dead end of the country everywhere you go. Nearly everyone there was trying to escape someone else, be it the Seminoles, the escaped slaves, the Florida Crackers, the mob, investment bankers trying to hide with the money they stole from their hedge funds, etc. The rich and the poor live in close proximity to one another, with the poor usually having the better built homes, while the rich have giant mansions made of paper mache and styrofoam. Rich and poor alike know that many of the cops are corrupt, so they just don't get called in until after the guy trying to rob you with the alligator gets shot by the old guy who's mad you tried to park in the handicap space and is coming for you next.
Stay there long enough, and the weird just becomes a part of you, like the crab grass perpetually destroying your yard. And I say this all with love, because I truly loved the place and would not have left it for most places other than Colorado of a decade ago.
I forgot about the paper industry. I heard a lot about the local mill when I was down there for the hurricane. Florida is a unique place for sure.

What is sad is that I am pretty sure this is an April Fools article, but because Florida is Florida, something both real and weirder will happen tomorrow.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/florida-man-accused-of-killing-two-eating-mans-face-believed-he-was-half-dog-half-man-doctor-says?fbclid=IwAR3cTOdzZCqy34wqvGLg92DmXXCyimbbYowx fkfQxCrPgjouySQOJRwJRhY
A former college student accused of fatally attacking a husband and wife in their Florida home and gnawing on the man's face believed he was “half-dog, half-man,” a forensic psychologist said in a mental health report.
Austin Harrouff, 22, has been charged with killing John Stevens III, 59, and his wife Michelle Mishcon, 53, at their home in Martin County on Aug. 15, 2016. Investigators said that during the attacks, he bit Stevens' face while making growling sounds. The couple was beaten and stabbed during the bizarre attack in their garage.
"The fact that Mr. Harrouff persisted in biting the male victim in the presence of police officers, in spite of being shot, being tased and receiving multiple kicks to the head, suggests that Mr. Harrouff was actively psychotic," Dr. Phillip Resnick of the University Hospitals of Cleveland wrote in the report, released this week by the Martin County State Attorney’s Office.
No shit?

Can happen anywhere it is hot.
Was caught behind two old-timers on a main street in Phoenix, temperature about 100 degrees.
They exchanged gestures, yells, car horn honkings, then stumbled out of their cars.
They started swinging wildly at each other. Middle of two lanes of traffic.
Everyone driving by just looked and yelled to quit blocking traffic.
Yep, it's the heat!

So I'm gonna be "that guy" for a minute.
Florida doesn't have more nutters than anywhere else, it only appears that way because Florida has some of the most liberal open record laws in the country. Almost any government generated piece of paper (like arrest records) and their attending photos, video, etc are required to be made easily available to the public. So the reason why you don't see this kind of nuttery from other states is only because the local authorities aren't releasing it all to the press. Otherwise I guarantee you that New Jersey Man and California Man and Illinois Man would be just as notorious.
Add to that the fact that FLA is the 4th most populous state in the union AND its warm there (so people are outside their homes more of the time) and its no wonder the place looks insane.

I used to split my time evenly between CO and FL due to my fishing problem. When the corps of engineers isn't dumping Lake O in both directions, the fishing is pretty good but eventually fuel runs low and you have to return to land. That's when the weirdness starts again. I doubt it's possible to find as many shady goings-on in any other state, it's an unusual place to be sure. Unless I planned on spending most waking hours offshore, I'd never schedule a trip to Florida.
Florida is best enjoyed from afar via stories about Florida Man.
Was reading a review of the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu movie on Rotten Tomatoes website. This was from one of the critics that didn't like it;
Oil and water. Toothpaste and orange juice. Good decisions and Florida. Some things just don't go together, and you can add Ryan Reynolds' voice and Pikachu to that list.

Florida man dies in meth-lab explosion after lighting farts on fire
DAVE WEASEL
GAINESVILLE, FL – A 37-year-old man is dead after his trailer home was destroyed in a meth-lab explosion, caused by him lighting up ‘blue angels’ to amuse his wife.
http://i1.wp.com/thevalleyreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/anthony.png?resize=603%2C302&ssl=1
The man’s wife was found lying naked on the couple’s front yard, reportedly still laughing. “A Blue Angel is when you put a lighter up to your butt and fart on it, making it catch on fire. It’s funny as s—,” explains the mans wife, who claims to be an expert on the subject. “Normally we go to Del Taco because of their $0.59 tacos, but we made some extra cash this week so we went to Chipotle. The farts you get from there could fill a gas chamber. I know he’s looking up from hell laughing his ass off saying it was worth it,” she says smiling through blackened teeth, apparently not caused by the fire.

Let's face it: There's a little bit of "Florida Man" in all of us.
At least, that's the idea behind the Florida Man Challenge, a viral social media joke that plays upon the plight of Florida residents who find themselves in strange predicaments ? and sometimes in handcuffs.
The Florida Man meme dates to 2013, according to website Know Your Meme, focusing on news headlines featuring "bizarre domestic incidents involving a male subject residing in the state of Florida."

The challenge started with a simple game: Google "Florida Man" and your birthday to find out what headline turns up.

The saga continues on the HVAC system in Marathon.
HVAC Tech looks at circuit breakers (first thing I checked) and the wiring, and says, "This is totally wrong, no wonder you don't have heat"
The installer did not upgrade the wiring when they installed the new system, which requires more amperage and power.
And, this is the coldest couple of days in Marathon in years.
The electricians will be here tomorrow morning to rewire - so, we have to pack everything of ours out of the house and go touring while they descend on the property to rewire.
I had already planned to visit Mother Ocean in Key Largo and help a friend who has his live-aboard tied up in Marathon.
Another "Adventure in Paradise", which is one reason I keep coming back to the Keys
The news station in Miami had to do a spot on the Iguanas. They are not dead when they fall from the trees. One lady threw an apparently frozen to death Iguana in the trash can in her garage. When it got warm enough to move around, it tore up everything it could trying to get out.
I never heard of that in Colorado.
There was a story last year about a guy from a country where they eat iguanas as a delicacy. He was driving and saw many of them in the ground after having fallen out of trees. He picked up something like 12-15 of them and tossed them in his back seat. Needless to say, when they all warmed up and became mobile again while he was driving...he had an issue on his hands.
The night the iguanas fell: Cold snap chills Florida and now iguana meat is up for sale (https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/the-night-the-iguanas-fell-cold-snap-chills-florida-and-now-iguana-meat-is-up-for-sale/ar-BBZdVzV)
"chicken of the trees" [LOL]
OUCH !!!!!!! [facepalm]
If my iguana falls out of the tree I kindly put it back and secure it with duct tape to prevent future falling.

I'm not clicking that...
Oh come on, scared of what kind of products Amazon will suggest? [gayafro]
(not clicking either, btw... because, yes.)
Nothing wrong with the video. Way more consensual than ducks.

Here is an article with the news films from the Iguana rain yesterday.
They are pretty humorous. The second or third is the one that my wife saw last night on the news
When I was talking to one of the residents here, I heard gun shots.
He told me the neighbors shoot the Iguanas. They use 22's, pellet guns, and bb guns.

Considering the dildo has zero bite marks on it I’d say no. Or! The alligator is very considerate.
Maybe he tried with his own the first time?
Are you suggesting that dildo is a rental?
Maybe he just borrowed it?
If you zoom in on the picture you can see a plastic spoon taped to the end with "Property of Fantasy Ranch: Gator Gazing, Horseback riding, and Dildo rental Family Fun Park."

What the flying f%$k.
He was first arrested at 12, and has had 230 felony criminal charges in his arrest history...
That is hard to believe, hard to grasp. Do they handle felonies in FL by writing a "warning"?
Huh. That's crazy in all sorts of ways. Maybe that's just called 'Friday Night' in Florida.

Only if they're in a public school setting. Bad press and all that, for the education system, ya know
230 felonies at age 26. He must have been shooting for a record.
230 felonies?! He should have been executed or ventilated by now.
Fun fact: my dad was Sheriff Judd’s youth pastor. Sheriff Judd, if none recall, was the one whose deputies unloaded a good amount of ammo into a cop killer they cornered in the woods. When asked by reporters why they fired that many rounds, the good sheriff replied, “because that was all the ammunition they had.” Or something to that effect. Lol.

"Naked woman drives golf cart through active shooter scene/police standoff" about sums it up.
Where's the full frontal mug shot?!?
Maybe she was creating a diversion to distract the armed teenager? "Oh, look. Boobies!"

Based on the lack of teeth in her mug shot. They did everyone a favor, by not publishing it.
