View Full Version : What's this about shooting 3-gun without a shotgun?

I've now had two people tell me that one can shoot the match without using a shotgun. What happens on the shotgun stages? A zero score?

I'm pretty sure I got some really bad information, but the two dudes claim to be experienced in competition shooting...

Wouldn't that be a 2-gun competition?

Maybe they use an AR, a pistol, and a Ruger mini-14.

Yup. More than a few matches do it because shotguns suck.

Big Ben has you use a PCC for the shotgun stages, except for the flying birds where you must use a shotgun.

Thats about all the details I have.

Hoser, so this is a feature of some specific matches, and not a general rule where I can just shoot any match I want without using a shotgun?

No love for the smooth bore I guess.

There's a new ruleset call UML (United Multigun League) that's going into effect around here. One of the divisions is 2x4 Open where PCC is an option and stages are written in such a way that there are a lot of ways to shoot them. You still probably need a shotgun or at least a few rounds of birdshot to put through a borrowed one at some point. I don't have all the details in my head because it's so new but that's the short version.

I guess shotguns represent toxic masculinity to today's more sensitive 3-gun shooters.

It is up to individual match directors and which ruleset they want to use.

This would actually be a strong draw for me. The ridiculousness of the equipment race was never so gleefully (sub whatever word I meant) on display as on the shotgun side.

I believe the guidance was that one wins a 3gun match by shooting pistol fast, rifle accurately, and reloading your shotgun. No thanks.

I had heard that sometimes it's more of a reloading contest than anything. That's a bit discouraging as I just discovered the fun.

Fellas, thanks for the feedback. So, are any of the local matches set up to shoot without the shotgun, with the exception of flying targets?

I should mention that my intent is to shoot a match without subjecting myself to the shotgun "speed unload / speed reload" components of the event. I have a shotgun, pistol, and carbine, but I don't want to buy and wear the ridiculous amount of shotgun gear on my belt or chest just to participate in a 12-gauge speed loading competition.

I should also mention that I don't have a pistol caliber carbine.

It'll be fun no matter what you decide. I'm no speed demon, but I probably like the shotgun stages the most. My caddies are set up for easy loan, too.

Well now, that is encouraging! In so far I really enjoy shooting shotguns. I've been looking @ options & pairing them with my interests. On the list are a several well suited for 3 gun & while Ive narrowed down my choices & configurations there are still a specific few* I'd like to try before I make a decision.

* not entirely accurate... I'd like to try them all - lol

I liked some of the shot gun side till i did a 3 gun that the SG was set up where you were required to shoot 49-50 rounds. Look i understand the theory behind 3 gun. However for some folks who have upper body disabilities 40-50 rds was absolutely ludicrous. 1 of the (at the time) younger guys who received injuries overseas couldn't hold a 20" with extended tube that long . Or was mobile enough to manipulate the loaner.

At what point did it become more about the amount of gear you had, than actual shooting? 3 gun use to be fun.

Sport will breed competition.

That said, the shotgun portion of 3gun has always been the least practical.

UML 2x4 is more of an equipment race than normal 3Gun. PCC is almost required to do well.

Gamemanship has ruined many a shooting sport.

It’s not a sport if you aren’t working for an advantage, that said, unless you are at the top you are only competing against yourself so go enjoy. Match directors are working hard to offer more options to pull in more shooters.

So do any of them offer a no-speed-unload-reload option around here? It's too bad the Resurgence match did not catch on.

I heard there is a match that replaced the shotgun with a cross bow, is that true?
