View Full Version : Big Ben Tactical Rifle Match (BLGC)

I am happy to announce that there will be a new match starting up at Ben Lomond Gun Club.
The Big Ben Tactical Rifle Match will be starting on 1 June 2019. First Saturdays. This match will be a combination of close range USPSA/3-gun stages with paper only targets and stages from Hoser's tactical rifle match at Pueblo, longer steel only stages.
The match will be monthly and on the first Saturday of the month. This match will be ran as an outlaw match, not under a governing organization, but will pull from concepts and rules of established organizations. Common Practical Shooting Safety rules will be enforced. These will be similar to what are used for USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, and 3Gun matches. If you are unfamiliar with them, I HIGHLY suggest you read them at one of the various web sites. I am working on written match rules specifically for this match.
https://practiscore.com/clubs/big_ben_tactical_rifle
We will be using following the firearms divisions:
Open - Two optics, bipod allowed, unlimited muzzle devices, braces and suppressors are allowed
, minimum 223/556 caliber
, all rifle calibers score major.
Tactical - One magnified optic, no bipod, max 1"x3" muzzle device, braces and suppressors are allowed
, minimum 223/556 caliber
, all rifle calibers score major
Limited - One non-magnified optic (non-mag, red dot, or iron sights), no bipod, max 1"x3" muzzle device, braces and suppressors are allowed
, minimum 223/556 caliber
, all rifle calibers score major
PCC - Follow the general USPSA/IDPA PCC divisions restrictions, braces ARE allowed, no suppressors (timer won't pick it up)
, any pistol caliber
, all pistol calibers score minor.
Pistol - Any USPSA/IDPA division of pistol, no brace or stock allowed, no suppressors (timer won't pick it up)
, any pistol caliber
, all pistol calibers score minor.
Major scoring: A = 5, B and C = 4, D = 3 points.
Minor scoring: A = 5, B and C = 3, D = 1 points.
Scoring will be a variation of Hit Factor (points per second) on paper stages and the variation of fixed time where fixed steel is engaged from various shooting positions multiple times.
No bimetal bullets, no incendiary or tracer ammo, no armor piercing or penetrator/green tip/black tip ammo. You get caught shooting it, you pay for the new steel and will be banned from future matches. If you are shooting Hornaday steel case that has acceptable bullets in their factory loads, you MUST show this ammo to the match director in it's original boxes before the match starts (damn Kommie gun shooters...).
Maximum rifle caliber allowed is 308 Winchester, no magnum calibers. Maximum velocity of any rifle caliber is 3200 fps. If there is a question whether a caliber is pistol vs rifle or beyond 308 Win, the Match Director will make that decision. No rifle calibers shooting subsonic will be allowed to use a suppressor. The timer will not pick up the shots. So if you want to shoot 300 Blk, go for it, but use sonic ammo.
Yes, you can shoot a pistol throughout the match. Any 200 yd stage will have two separate steel target arrays; one for rifle calibers at longer distances, one for pistol calibers at a less longer distance. The separate arrays will be identified by different colors and be identified in the written stage briefing. Basically, the long shots are for rifle calibers and the close shots will be for pistol calibers, lol. The pistol caliber shots are still going to be very challenging, think 75-100 yds.
I know the Rocky Mountain 300 match will also be running this weekend and it will stop many USPSA shooters from attending the inaugural match. As I contemplated whether to start in July or June, I concluded this match will be attended by a cross-pollination of shooters from various disciplines and was conceived with that in mind. Additionally, starting with a smaller attended match will allow match staff to iron out some the growing pains that I'm sure will crop up with any new match. Shooting up-close dynamic style stages will be a new experience for some of the tactical rifle shooters out there. Be forewarned, it's very addicting, very fun, but there is a learning curve to it. Come on out in July if you can't make June! As it is, with projected fewer shooters I suspect we will be running 4 stages for the first match and 5 stages for subsequent matches.
If you are interest in being permanent match staff, please contact me at seanmyhre@rocketmail.com or call/text my cell 303-330-7757. I will take all the set-up help I can get every match, but match staff will be those helping me plan and execute the matches before hand.
Matches will cost $20 initially. I'm still working out the finances part. Paper targets, range fees, PractiScore donations... I'm figuring it out.
Set up will start at 0700. The match will start at 0930. Round count will be in the 120 to 150 range, bring extra ammo to make those misses up with.
This is a new match, so I expect there will be some changes along the way to make it better. Please bare with me as we get this match going. There will be the BLGC ladies shoot the same day every month, so we will be logistically working out any conflicts for berms for the matches. Regardless, there will be plenty of room.

That's great news! I shoot Big Ben Multigun regularly out there and I will definitely be checking this out.
Being able to use my PCC is a big draw and will be a tough choice every month, though.
Cant wait to come out and shoot it.
I know a ton of work, planning and effort has gone into this.
Well done Sean. Well done.

This is the time when all of those interested parties start PMing to ask what they can do to help the match, so we can make this great, and keep it running long into the future.
...hint, hint... nudge, nudge...
Hell yeah! I will be at the 300, but July is in my calendar!
Thanks to everyone working to set up this match!

This is what the people want. Greatly looking forward to attending and helping set up make this match happen!
Looks like fun.
Stupid question:
Are you limited to one gun, or would it be allowable to shoot a .223 rifle on the long range targets and run a PCC for the close up paper hosing?
awesome, this sounds like a lot of fun...

Dude yes!!
Should be back in state and ready to roll June 1st.
SUPER pumped to have a second scary black rifle match back up. Thanks for putting the legwork in to get this running Sean. See ya out there.
Even though I don't know if I'll ever get to the match, I'm also thankful you've been able to get it up and running.
Looking forward to it. Need more work with my offset irons....

Stages are essentially done for the first match. I'm gonna have them reviewed by a few others before publishing them and setting them up in Practiscore, but they are basically ready to go.
100 yard Eddie Standards. Yep, just like at Hoser's match, but it's all shot at 100 yds. Expect some smaller targets though. Second closer array for pistol calibers at 50 yds.
200 yard Static Steel: Yep, almost just like Hoser's match, but there will be two different arrays. Close array for pistol caliber guns (75-100ish), far arrays for rifle caliber guns(175 to 200ish).
Two field courses with all paper, 28 and 32 rounds. If you've never shot up close and fast, well, that's gonna change.
This is similar to what I hope to run regularly, 5th stage is definitely a future possibility for this match.
VTAC Standards just like Hosers match will also be in the very near future (I'm thinking probably July if I were to bet on it). I am also working on a few other standards stages too. We will see what comes up.

Why? Most modern PCCs can group 3-5 inches at 100 yards.

Wow, what a great event. Thanks Sean! The stages were alot of fun, an awesome mix of run n gun, Hoser-esque tactical shots and Eddie's Standards. I'm super excited for the next one. Thanks again to Sean for a great event!
Sorry I missed it. Glad to hear it went well!
What a turnout! Thank you for such a fun match!
That was a LOT of fun! I've not done that close up hose the paper stuff since IDPA side matches. I was slow. I also had a blast, saw some familiar faces and get some time on the clock. Good day for all!

What a great match! I ate shit on the steel stages - crazy how mid-level finishes on the paper stages can be bombed out by messing up the steel standards stage [facepalm]
I know where I need to improve!
Thanks to Sean and the board at BL for organizing.

Yup me too haha. Shooting the 200 yard stage with a red dot was a bad idea. Swapping with someone for a Strike Eagle, I should do much better next time!

I shot the 200 yd steel stage in 194 seconds. I skipped the 6" plate off the tires, so had one miss. It's very doable, 3 1/4-3 1/2 MOA target, but it was too difficult for many. We are bumping the target sizes up for the next match. We ran two 10", two 8" and the dreaded 6". Next match we will bump them up to 12", 10", and 8". I may switch it up to 6 shots in 4 positions too.
I think the 6" plate will make an appearance on that stage every once in a while in the future. Makes people practice and sight in their guns.
What I DID see a lot of was paper targets at 5 feet all gut shot. Alpha, Charlies with the holes all in the colon area. OFFSET.... Lot of misses on the head shots too.
A lot of good information for people from the match, close targets and long targets with the same gun. It was humbling/fun for everyone.
I shot the 200 yd steel stage in 194 seconds.
Yeah I was in your squad and saw that. My red dot was a Comp M2 so I had a 4 MOA dot, super hard to see the targets :/ I should have started at the closer barricades haha. But switching to a LVPO will allow me to do the Pueblo match as well.
Very excited for next month at Ben Lomond!

Sign Up for the Big Ben Tactical Rifle match on 6 July is open.
https://practiscore.com/big-ben-tactical-rifle-clone/register
5 stages, a 200 yard normal format stage, VTAC barricade standards at the 100 yard, and three field courses.
Just so everyone knows what I saw were issues and I'm working on resolving them:
200 yd stage will have bigger steel and be faster to shoot. This is obviously VERY dependent on how well the shooter sights in their gun. I will also be acquiring copious amounts of fluorescent paint to paint the steel with as this appeared to work the best visually.
Stage timers sucked.
Nooks required a signature before they would let the shooter's score be approved. I figured out why and fixed this. Electronic scoring issues are part of the learning curve for me. I'd still be trying to figure out how to post scores if it weren't for Charlene.
I'm working with the BLGC BoD to get rifle racks for the berms. There were rifles sprawled all over the side berms, LOL. This could take some time. We will see.
I'm working on a set of written rules, shamelessly I will be stealing and revising Griswold's rules from Big Ben 3-gun. This is lower on the list of items.
If anyone else has constructive input, shoot me a PM. I'm looking for ideas for different standard stage designs. I'd like to establish about 6 different standards we could run every year.
BTW, July sign up opened at 0800 this morning and there are already 20 shooters signed up. I set it up for 5 stages and 60 shooters. I think people like the format so far.
Can't flippin' wait. [AR15]

6 July stages are complete.
5 stages, 136 rounds. VTAC Barricade, 200 Yd steel, Three field courses. One is a par time with a mandatory reload (on the move) with two strings of fire. So two mandatory reloads. You've been warned. [Flower]

Would having a visible laser on your rifle count as a second optic, making it an open gun?
No, but short of MAYBE a weak side off the shoulder shot on a close paper target, it would be worthless. I have never put a shot like this in a match yet. Doesn't mean I wouldn't or won't. Just means I don't think you would see any utility in it.

There will be a new prop at the 6 July match that's never been used at Hoser's or my match before. It got field tested last Sunday along with different plate sizes at different distances and different paint colors for the 200 yd stage. It was the biggest time and miss issue. I think I have that cleared up, at least from my end.
Sight your rifles in.
I have a couple other ideas for different props in the future too.

Oh yea !! Number 2. Been looking forward to this match, since shooting the last one. Great range, great people, great courses. Wish we could do this every weekend hahaha.
My friend is trying to register and there is an empty spot on my squad, but Practiscore says the match is full. Is this a glitch, or has registration been stopped for this match?
The "There are open slots on the squading lists, But I can't register because the match is full" question comes up quite often for many different matches. Here is what happens. When the Match Staff create the match in Practiscore they set a limit to the maximum quantity of shooters. When shooters register that isn't tied to squadding automatically. All shooters must manually pick a squad and assign themselves to it. When you see open slots in the squadding but the match is full from a registration perspective, it simply means that there are registered shooters who haven't squaded yet.
SA Friday

In this case there were two different problems. There were unsquadded people (fixed) and there were three people who withdrew from the match and I hadn't deleted them yet. Practiscore still counts them after being withdrawn against the match cap (stupid) until they are manually deleted. Hoser took care of it and I contacted the three on the waiting list they could sign up.
There is one slot left as of this posting.
The weather man is currently changing predictions and there could be afternoon rain. I'll call it Friday. We may try to start the match early if it looks like we might be able to sneak it in.

Gotta love Colorado. The ONE day you don't want sketchy weather information, and guess what? The weather guessers are guessing... Tomorrow has the potential to be a huge mess, or a huge success. What's life without risk? We are doing this!
It's going to be cooler, and could rain on us. Be prepared. There's going to be a full house of shooters too. I cannot stress not sitting around and not resetting the stages. Work through the day, or risk the wrath of the thunder gods.
With all that said, we are going to start the match as early as possible to try to beat any weather. WE ARE GOING TO START THE MATCH EARLY!!!! 0900 START!

The match is still evolving, lots of lessons to apply to make it better. I still need to nail down the stage timing for better flow. It’s tough with the wide spectrum of shooting styles being integrated but we will get it as good as we can.

I'm glad I was finally able to get out to shoot this match. It's definitely a different flavor from the Pueblo match and the match director and stage designers do a good job of putting it together and designing engaging and fun stages.

I'm sure they'll make it back in membership fees; that was a well done production.
Plus they saved whatever amount of money going with "Xylophone Rock II" B footage quality audio for the sound track.

You can get those drones at Costco for like $600.
My assumption is that the video was done by a member, probably for free.

Ya. I had 82 sign up, 10 withdraw, and 10 no-show. I suspect a few pussed out after I sent an email saying we were deep in squads. We were out by 3pm as usual. If everyone would have showed, I estimate 330 at the latest. Oh well. It was a crazy good match with more steel at the 200 yd to make it move more efficient and another new rendition of the VTAC barricade.
Depending out how it goes, Matt Hess may be MDing the April match. I may be physically not able. We will see. Regardless, the match won't be cancelled unless I don't have an MD or the weather is garbage. I will be spending my time high as I can get on opiates designing stages.

We will be changing the 22LR steel on the 100 and 200 yd stages to a further distance for the next matches. Also, we will be allowing people to run their AR's on the 200 yd stage at the rifle targets in the 22LR division in the future. So, if you want to run your 22LR but shoot the long targets with the AR at the 200, you can do so. VTAC will stay 22LR for the division.

Sean, on the 200 yard stage, the RO did not see about 10 or 12 of my little .22 hits on the targets. I'm not blaming him because the targets didn't swing and there was very little splash visible, but I could see it with my 3x optic and he didn't.
I was wondering if there is a lighter weight target set that can be used for 22s, so that ROs don't have to use binoculars to see the 36 grain hits.

Lots of questions about the night match. It is tentatively scheduled for the night after the 2 Oct 21 match. I am still pending the large steel targets for the 200 yd berm. Yes, we will be shooting to 200 yds in the night match. I am going to keep two of the paper stages up from the day match and may or may not adjust them and adjust the 200 yd steel stage for the night match.
YOU MUST HAVE SHOT AT LEAST ONE OF THE DAY MATCHES (and not DQed) TO SHOOT THE NIGHT MATCH. ?I would prefer you have at least two successful matches of experience. If you have others interested in the night match and they are not on the mailing list and not shot the match, the match requirement isn't negotiable.
YOU MUST have a head lamp (or helmet lamp, if you have something else in mind, ask first) on you at all times for the night match. It must have a red light setting. This is a minimal cost and is a non-negotiable safety measure. The head lamp doesn have to be on a helmet or your head, it can be worn around your neck like a necklace.
ALL ROs will run a head lamp on the red light setting during the course of fire. I have tested this a bit and it doesn't flash out the NVGs from behind the shooter. This is so the RO can positively see the shooter and their firearm.
There will be two divisions for the night match, NVG and white light. You can use whatever optics you want in either division. THERE WILL NOT be any PCC, Pistol, or 22LR divisions for this match. ?There may be in future years, but for now, let's keep it simple.
There will be limited slots available. 3 stages at 13-15 shooters a stage.
This (tentatively) will be a first night match done for Tac rifle at this club. Things may change in the future. It will depend on how good or bad aspects of the match work out.
