I've heard rumors & tale of gatherings long ago but I wouldn't know as I've been here just under a year. I imagine coordinating it is a chore & scheduling alone is improbable as everyone is surely busy but I thought I'd put it out there to see if the seed can find soil in time to make hay while the sun still shines.

They were usually on Saturdays at either the north or south locations. There were often volunteers for food and bevs. A senior member usually took on the role of Range Officer.

Had some fun trying out various firearms that folks would bring.

Sadly the best I can offer is up to 3x guests at a time to GreenMill in Erie. If someone wants to go, shoot me a PM and I will keep in touch on my (at least once monthly) range trips. They are often times Sunday morning at 8am when I can usually have the place to myself.

While a rolling stone gathers no moss, I wouldn?t count your chickens before they hatch.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush but sometimes you should just let sleeping dogs lie.

It's still on the drawing board. Finding a location that works best for the greatest number of people is the long pole in the tent right now. My work schedule over the summer was in mas flux for some time but now it looks mostly open.

I'm strongly leaning to the South Site but reluctant due to it's wide open to the public nature.

Looking at late July.

Was up at the South Site off 67 north of Woodland Park and some wizard figured it would be great to fence off the western side with wire!!! Now they blocked off lanes and now there are entry points to get to the limited lanes available.
DOW or some dumb ass agency wasted tax dollars.

I did two PUSU at Pawnee and beat everyone I shot against in pistol. I am willing to put up again on a Sunday at Pawnee / Baker Draw but it needs to be early as that place will get busy on a Sunday. Find a spot to shoot, pick a day & time. At least 3-4 weeks is enough time to get everything finalized. Ask for assistance RO'ing, and to see who can bring what kind of targets and how many. Of course weather / high fire danger will play a part.

Forum members either show up, or they don't. There's usually a decent turn out.

Metro people often gathered at Harris Park (Bailey); meet at the Loaf n Jug by the 43 turn off for those that don't know where it's at. We had a good turnout several years ago when I went. I haven't been there in a awhile so I don't know the status because I just drive to the Chaffee County range...spending the day there today.

I've been to a shoot (not two.)

We did it last time up at the Pawnee Grasslands/Baker Draw, and it worked out well. We were there early enough in the morning that we staked out our lanes, and had plenty to spare for the other shooters. Felt safe, family like, no problem cooking some dogs on the grill, etc. While I'd love to go south to meet Kaazoo, this is what I know, and since I'd like a shoot, I'd like to set a date.

I have hikes on the 30th, and the 4th, how about Sunday the 14th of July?

I'll volunteer to setup a list of things for folks to offer to bring (food, etc.) if that sounds okay to everyone.

Another quick thought, maybe do sandwiches this time so we dont have to bring grills and some one dosen't get stuck for 2 hours grilling in the heat. Last time the charcoal didn't make it till the end luckily there were extra propane grills and then they ran out of gas too. Just a thought??????

It's been hard to take the temperature of those interested, and who's located where, and where most of the most-interested people can meet up. I've only ever made one North shoot, since a couple hours in the car each way is a bit of a turn off, and I made it to three or four of the South shoots, since those were only 1/2-3/4hr each way up by Woodland Park.

Maybe put a sticky poll for North/South and interest level?

Could make it of the form:
1> not interested
2> will attend if near and convenient
3> will attend if near, might attend if far
4> will attend near or far

And have interested members reply in the thread with their preference of North or South location

That place looks a lot safer and more organized than the Harris Park or Buffalo Creek shooting areas. I live up here, and I won't go to either place with other people there. The last time I was at Buffalo Creek, some people showed up who thought it was OK to have a 360 degree firing line.

I wish they did the world a favor, and faced in. They were shooting randomly in the hill across the creek and the actual backstop berm. In the three minutes it took me to pack up my stuff and get out of there, I was muzzled at least a dozen times. Some of them started firing into the berm I was parked against as I left.

I've seen all kinds of stupidity at those two places including one special individual who started firing his lever action 30-30 while I was still down range setting targets. It was better when I moved up here 12 years ago especially on week nights...not great but better. It's awful now.

Harris Park scares the shit out of me not just because of adjacent shooting idiots who will walk out on a hot line to retrieve their targets, but because on at least two occasions, I've seen idiot hikers walk out of the tree line.
Pawnee Baker Draw has more rules, and I've seen a lot more of FWC and periodic LEO presence, with an eye towards those rules being enforced. But I've also seen a dad who let his kids climb on the back side of the berm, and folks who set up a shooting line just to the sides of the Draw, 'because there are no rules in the grasslands', and end up shooting over or into the berms while folks are downrange. These are some of the reasons I quit shooting outdoors by myself, and joined Pawnee Sportsmans with Jim, the other being his undeniable charisma and persistence.

Which is a lot to say that stupid people are everywhere, you take your chances wherever you go, and when FWC gets nosey about whether a random group of well-armed strangers are behaving appropriately on the line, I take it with a grain of salt. But I was still really pissed when they gave me an 'offroading' ticket for parking 10 feet off the road that one time. Regardless, I have a (moderately) high (partly unfounded) degree of faith in the motley crew of this forum, having shot with several of you before, and will gladly take the risk, and bring toilet paper. And while we can't bring full auto, shotguns, or the 50s, I can bring a bunch of weird shit that might be fun to shoot, like an integrally suppressed .44, and a suppressed Tavor, an SR25, etc... as well as a pile of fancy 1911s.

I doubt anyone attending this event will be at the GSSF on the 14th. Or they might, like a retired .gov retiree, double dip . Outside the warmer temps in the afternoon, that's the best time to do a GSSF. Most everyone has come & gone, making the stages go faster with hardly anyone there.

I'm sure you have all noticed that I've been absent from this thread for a while.

Originally, I'd planned to set up an official site shoot. This thread quickly got out of control with others making plans outside of what I was looking to achieve or able to support; it got a life of it's own.

While I do hope all of you have a great time at this event, please note that it is not an official site sponsored shoot. I hope that safety has been appropriately planned and is equally executed.

I haven't been out to the forest beyond Woodland Park since shortly before Rew died, so I don't have a good feel for conditions there.

Since Rampart was closed, I've only shot at indoor ranges (Whistling Pines, Magnum), CMSC and Dragonman's. All charge, and may be difficult to set up a group event, especially on a weekend.

If not charging is the primary factor, then the South site it must be. Trash is trash, but having enough bodies in place will tend to squeeze out party crashers, unless they're particularly sociable types.

I've got two of a very similar design, which I will bring along with two IDPA cardboards and some firring strips. If need be, one can drive the firring strips directly into the ground with a hammer, staple the cardboard and run as is.

I am probably going to pitch camp on the 50 yard range to start, just because this is a group of AR enthusiasts so it would be ironic to stick to the handguns only 25 range.

I see my name got up there with a question mark. While I certainly would be quite entertaining to watch, you all might be laughing so hard from my poor aim there might be serious bodily injury from all the laughter. I have another commitment and was merely chuckling a bit at what I thought was Sideshowbob's reference to canapes (I can't put that little accent mark over the last "e" but I think you know what I mean). Enjoy, everyone.

I have a small rifle rack, but I will try to make a larger one tomorrow, just in case. Won't be fancy.

Sounds good to me : )

Sorry, I saw the list of potential members going, and I will not be there.
If someone wants to cruise by my way Saturday afternoon, I can donate two wood target stands made to use firring strips, but no strips, to mount targets and about a half dozen IPSC home made targets, just cardboard full size outlines no A,B and C zones.

And I was planning on borrowing guns while I was there, I no longer have any since the floods of 2013 when Cherry Creek broke its banks and washed my safe to parts unknown.

It was great to see others I knew and to meet new people and make new friends. Thanks to all that showed up, it was a good day.

I also verified that shooting well is a perishable skill. I really sucked at anything over 15 yards. There was a great variety of firearms to sample and targets to shoot at.

Thanks again to all that made it, I look forward to shooting with you again.

Good company yesterday & it was a pleasure to finally meet all of you. I enjoyed putting faces & names to the respective sn's. Very nice to see you again too Dave, especally now/after sporting that shark bite & I'm glad to see you're recovering nicely. No worries on the brass Beast, I'm glad it'll find use. Unsure if there was anyone from the forum there that I didn't get to meet, apologies if that was the case. I did meet a few new folks (Peter, Eric & the golden bearded fellow whose name escapes me just now, sorry) & encouraged them to stop by here. Hopefully they read this & decide to join ar-15.co

Thank you to everyone who was very generous & let me ogle/fondle/sample all of collective firearms as that was a real treat. Being I'm so rifle-centric I was a bit surprised that my favorite of the day was the tac sport orange. Liked it well enough I might have to see about finding one for a real test drive. ;-)

Another unexpected joy was to finally fire my first revolver, yay. It was the Ruger super black hawk special .44, I believe. First firearm I've ever tried that required a bit of extra effort to manage. It actually hurt a little to shoot which made me giggle (a lot) & it was uniquely fun. Thank you for staying a little longer than planned so I had the opportunity. : )

A successful event, I'm glad everyone had a good time. As expected, everyone in our group set an exemplary standard on the firing line as well as for all the folks who weren't with us. We all made extra effort to leave the range in better condition than we found it & packed out a lot of discarded trash as well.

I hope we can do it again in the fall (maybe?) so that other folks who were unable to attend can partake in the fun. Cheers!

Anyways, in my limited experience, this was about as good as it gets. A surprisingly large number of shooters showed up, shot safely, and nobody was an a-hole. I met some great folks and had some really good conversations. No blood, no sun burn, and I came back with as many guns as I started with, not less, not more. Would gladly shoot with all of you ruffians again. Hell, I might even bake a pie next time.

ChickNorris
07-19-2019, 09:24
@ Hoser's tactical rifle the target distances vary (on average) between 130ish & 300 yds depending on the stage & his whimsy.

Last match one of the 3 stages was a Texas star @ 100 yds from the start position with a subsequent array of staggered targets that went out to 180ish, all to be shot from 5 different barricade positions & under par time.

About as much fun as a lady can have with her skirt in the correct orientation. ;-)

Rifle & case, 3 mags min & a way to carry them, approved ammo, eyes/ears, 15$.

If you're talking about the big rack with the half-assed dovetails, you can just have it. Come by any time. It actually solves a problem in that I don't want it taking up space, but it seemed too wasteful to put it on the curb, even as a practice piece. So you'd be doing me a favor taking it off my hands!
