So I've been growing tired of the way politics are going in this state. I'm tired of the snow, I'm tired of having to pay $1000/mo for a shoebox. I've accepted a job in Texas and will be leaving for Austin on the 24th. The office is 2 blocks away from SilencerShop and Capitol Armory, so that's cool. And I can get a large, awesome apartment for $800/mo
Congratulations. I think you'll like Austin. Good luck in your travels.

Well, the internet works down there as well so we expect you'll do like so many other CO expatriates and continue to participate here - from our other Southern Outpost.
Enjoy TX, it's like a whole nother world down there.

Good luck on your move. I am sure you will enjoy Texas.
Good luck! Don't think the politics angle will be any better in Austin . . . pretty increasingly progressive town. But you'll definitely get away from the snow and have a lower cost of living. And phenomenal BBQ & music scene.

Yeah, in Austin proper, for sure, but I'll be getting a house outside of the city itself, so I'll still be in a more conservative area. I'm tired of Denver and Boulder having say over the whole state.

Better trade-in that rice burner for a truck...
Sad to see you go but congrats. And I completely understand.
I've never been to Austin but want to visit some day. I know it's mostly Lefists but TX keeps it grounded. If TX isn't careful, it may go the way of CO someday.

Congrats on the new chapter of your life. I'm a native Texan and still have family there. The hill-country area around Austin is probably some of the prettiest in the state.
But there's no way in hell I'd go back. Mostly because it's so damn hot and humid. Except for the BBQ. If I could go once a week for good, real BBQ, I'd be happy.
Good luck!
Yeah, I wasn't ready for the humidity when I was there last weekend. But it was at least made a bit worse by an incoming storm (and what a storm it was).
Get used to those storms. Thunder so loud it shakes the entire house. I think the thinner air up here minimizes some of the impact.
Great BBQ. It is the 'Boulder' of TX. Plenty of Tex-Mex rather than the New-Mex we tend to get here. Great BBQ. The hill country is some of the most interesting geography in TX. 6th Street isn't quite the same as it was back in the '80s, but I hear times change. Did I mention they have great BBQ?
If you get a truck, all of the manufacturers have Texas Editions for your 'country cadillac'. The largest number of pickups per capita.
I'm with BG, I'm not a fan of the heat/humidity. At least it isn't Houston. [Coffee]
Just remember to think everything is bigger in Texas, except they constantly forget about Alaska.
And yes Austin is one of if not the most progressive towns in the whole state of Texas. Fun college townish vibe on the weekends, plenty of fun bars. During the week though they have a pretty solid amount of semi-aggressive homeless population that are annoying to deal with. I think the cops push them along for the weekends as you don’t see many around them hanging around

Good luck with that! [beatdeadhorse] I figure it will be a good decade or more before the left does to Texas what they did to CO.
Just realize that you will be replacing snow with heat, humidity and bugs (which is the main thing keeping me from moving to Texas).
That said, I really don't blame you. The wife and I are exploring an exit strategy as well (especially since I've been unemployed for most of the last year). We're looking at the Rapid City area though, which still has the snow but a much lower population of snowflakes.
To be fair to Austin, in my 20s I seriously considered moving there (from Wichita, KS) and there are some good things about the area (one thing liberals are good for is good restaurants/bars/coffee shops ... and if you're single, loose women).
I figure in the next year or two there will be a lot of these kinds of threads here :(

Nice..I almost took a job there a couple of years ago. Hippie Hollow isn't too far away[Coffee]
I never found the Austin are to be too bad as far as humidity. Not really any bugs there either. With the exception of the occasional flash flood or wildfire I find the Austin/San Antonio area climate to be pretty nice most of the time. It does get pretty hot there though in the summer.
Both of my brothers live just outside of Austin and have been there for probably twenty five years or so.
Definitely plenty of good food and plenty of good music. The bats are pretty cool too.
This is what you can do in TX. My son lives in NW San Antonio burbs and got a ride along through a friend. Pig hunting from a choppa.

Well, you will still be on the "Colorado River" through Austin.
Great rowing. Can be your new hobby.
Had some property in Lago Vista at Lake Travis for a few years, and attended a lot of conferences there years ago.
The TX politicians are not reluctant to visit any group there.
I met and talked with Governors Ann Richards and George Bush while attending conferences of only about 60 to 70 participants. They were both down to earth and approachable.
There are a lot of things to do and enjoy.

Congrats on making a move you feel is needed.
I'm hoping to be doing the same soon, so I look forward to your post-move thoughts and what types of remorse you experience about it, what you'd have done differently, etc.

Been to GA many times. You have to be very careful about the area/county you pick to live in. It's not just politics but corruption that can include LE. I'm sure your friends can set you straight on it all.
I'd have to think carefully about GA. But FL, SC, and even NC all look good to me.

I wonder if there are folk in other select states that bitch about all the Coloradans moving in, blowing up housing costs & crowding their counties & roads.
Probably not. We're still a pretty small state population-wise. Folks also seem to be going all over the place, not just a single state.
I wonder if there are folk in other select states that bitch about all the Coloradans moving in, blowing up housing costs & crowding their counties & roads.
I have a friend in a rural community in FL who is part of the welcoming committee. They make sure all new land owners/residents understand the "rules." The transplants who are "live and let live" types fit in well. They will chase the hand-wringing statists out. They had a developer trying to buy up land to sub-divide and they locked him out too (I can't remember how they did it but I think he got tired and moved on).
Other populated areas that don't get personal are different. When I lived in N.FL they hated "Yankees" and didn't seem to care enough to find out what the word "Yankee" meant. Colorado <> New England/NY/NJ, but it was all the same to them.
But they are swimming in "Yankees" and can't do a thing about. Some of these states have income based on migration (FL has no income tax, but a special investment tax to catch the retirees, and limited homestead exemptions on property).
Have a friend that moved to Montana and some of the neighbors won't talk to them because they're from Colorado.
When I used to work auto claims sometimes I'd hear people living in Wyoming complaining about Colorado drivers.

Yep. I frequently have to assure people here I'm not one of "those" type of Coloradans. To many people in this part of Idaho, if you weren't born here you're an outsider. Pretty much everyone keeps to themselves and family. Families are huge here, too. Many people my age were born here and have rarely, if ever, traveled more than 100 miles or so from home. Justin, I've explained my main reservation to moving to the deep south in private (so we won't rehash that here) but with AL and GA passing these anti-abortion laws triggering massive autistic screeching from the left, you may see a mass exodus of leftists from those states making them much more attractive.
Although I still think I'd prefer the climate of Tennessee and Kentucky better than AL and GA (but if you go WAY south you can get on the coast in AL and GA so maybe that would make up for it).
I suspect your biggest challenge will be getting your baby-mama to agree to the move
I envy all those who get to leave so congrats! I have seven years until my emancipation, but I'm heading to Wyoming or the Dakotas.

I was born and raised down here in the south so this is really home for me. Heat and humidity would be tough to get used to if you've never lived here but just like the extreme cold you get used to it. You know what I really love about it here (other then the obvious conservative values) is the people. Maybe it's because they are "my" people but I found the majority of Coloradans to just be rude. Maybe not intentional but they just don't take the time to do the little things that matter, like say hello, wave to your neighbor, hold the door for people, say please and thank you.
Now for those that have not grown up or lived here there will be some culture shock but I think would would come to love it.
And we have a Georgia firearm trading forum site that would blow your mind. I've spent way too much on guns since I have been back here Lol

hold the door for people,
Entering the dentist office near DTC last week, I held the door open for some dickhead that didn't reciprocate....so I said "you're welcome". He, myself and a lady stepped onto the elevator.
He exited first, and the fucker pressed the open door button on his way out of the elevator. Clearly his big move of the day to F up someone else for a moment, like the guy who busts down the merge lane to the very end and hacks someone off to get in. You petty, self serving piece of shit.

I believe it reads something like it should be like a zipper near the end of the two lanes & continues moving for maximum traffic flow. Instead, most people come to an abrupt halt and fly unpleasantries in an effort to recapture feelings they otherwise never feel as a result of a poor childhood and a daddy who never hugged them.

As for me,people who lived here for more than 15+ years can call themselves a native if they want.
Btw. Let me know how job market and house/rent is there in Austin.
I think there is a place with lower rent, lower property taxes, higher wage, and less stupid laws.

The other day, I arrived at a slowdown on I70 due to striping procedures. Right lane was backed up for almost 2 miles. People were straddling lanes to keep the wide open left lane from advancing. I got several single finger waves that day.
Why the hell would you leave 2 miles of open blacktop blocked for 1/2 mile of road work?
Because people are dumb and don't understand better ways.

Not a native Coloradan but moved there in 75, went in the AF in 79, then moved back in 89 when I got out. Lived there for the next 26 years. Was just about 10 years too long. Couldn't be happier with where we landed after leaving.
That's a great picture of the old airport. I remember watching the planes taxi across the freeway.
Born in Texas and lived there for the first 28 years of my life. Texas is pretty low on my list of states I?d like to live in. Unless you?re willing to live in one of the big cities the rest of the state is still living in the dark ages. The climate doesn?t suit me for the majority of the state as well.
I remember when I moved here people would give me a little shit for being from Texas. I bet in retrospect they should have encouraged me to bring more friends and family with me. I?m guessing if the amount of people moving here from Texas was as great as the number of people flooding in from California the political climate over the last twenty years would be totally different.
Say what you want about Texans but they do value their freedoms and liberties and are pretty intolerant of those that would try and infringe on their rights.
I can safely say I am CO native, when I was living in CO to see Stapleton Airport between I-70.
That was the coolest runway ever! I was sad to see it go.
My dad took a civil service job at Lowry Field teaching the Norden Bomb Sight after he was discharged when WWII ended. After living in a few places around the state, my mom and him settled in Monument and lived there for 50 years until he passed away last year. He loved this state especially what it was when he came here in the 40s. I think the native thing is kinda silly; but for those of us that lived our lives in this state before 2000, we saw a much different and better Colorado. It's progressively turned into a shit hole since 2000, and migration is definitely a contributing cause of that. I absolutely hate it here now, and I just want to do my time, get my pension, and get the hell out.

We moved here in early summer of 1959, so I am about to celebrate 60 years of residency.
Joined the service from here and returned to go to CU Boulder.
It was cheaper to pay 5 years of Colorado State back taxes and claim residency status then to pay 1 semester of out-of-state tuition.
It was a struggle on the GI Bill ($135/month total) to come up with the $200 of back taxes, but the savings on tuition was real.
Extra jobs, gold panning in Left Hand Canyon, and contract work supplemented my costs to graduation.
Married a 3rd generation Colorado girl (her parents and grandparents were from Victor, CO)
My job required I travel to a lot of other states for 40 years, and:
I still like Colorado the best.

I was under the impression one remains a resident of their home state, including for tax purposes, while in service unless they specifically change that.
I was a legal resident of Florida my entire time in, so I never had to worry about state taxes.

Returned in 1970.
Colorado had not become veteran friendly yet and required their servicemen to pay state taxes to remain state residents.
Way to prove to CU that you were a Colorado resident was to submit your state income tax returns.
I don't think Florida has a personal income tax.
I was discharged at Treasure Island in San Francisco and the wise men said that was the best place to stay.
CA had the highest unemployment payments, longest term for those payments, automatic California residency, and free tuition at 2-year Jr. Colleges and all of the credits transferred to the Univ. of Calif. Not so Colorado.
I couldn't be convinced. I wanted to return to CO.

Right, Florida is no income tax for state, but I remember guys from California getting hammered on state taxes while in.
Why didn't you pay state taxes while a resident, though in service? Finance should have handled that from the get-go; you should have had to do something to keep it from not being paid?

Navy was a little different in the 60's.
No requirement for state tax withholding as I recall. I was not aware of the Colorado requirement to file state tax forms, and was at an age that my thoughts were on other things.
You would just leave your pay on the books and draw down whatever you needed for runs to the store or to go on liberty.
When I was separated from active duty, I had enough on the books to buy a used VW Squareback, tour the country for 2 months, and to pay my first year at CU.
I was pretty frugal and kept all of the extra pay for hazardous duty, etc.
Just was not in my wheelhouse.

The problem is that most of the people moving here from Texas lately are coming from Travis County so not really any better than Californians.
Born in Texas and lived there for the first 28 years of my life. Texas is pretty low on my list of states I?d like to live in. Unless you?re willing to live in one of the big cities the rest of the state is still living in the dark ages. The climate doesn?t suit me for the majority of the state as well.

Say what you want about Texans but they do value their freedoms and liberties and are pretty intolerant of those that would try and infringe on their rights.
I've been told Colorado was full of Texans in the 80's until the oil bust and they all mostly left.
When I came here in 92 the commercial vacancy rate was insanely high.
A LOT of roofers here are from Texas, and Minnesota.
That was the coolest runway ever! I was sad to see it go.
See all of those brake lights on the approach? I hated it. People slowing down for no reason other than they were going to drive in the shade for a short bit.
I moved here from TX in 94. This place is moving far away from when I came here. It's just a matter of time before I can make my escape.

Yeah, in Austin proper, for sure, but I'll be getting a house outside of the city itself, so I'll still be in a more conservative area. I'm tired of Denver and Boulder having say over the whole state.
Let's hope TX won't go the way of CO in a few years, it's the national trend to have major urban areas control the entire state, and I'm afraid TX is a hot spot of that happening.

And if we're talking about wishing that more conservative people would move here, then wish granted.

You might make the case that they're more socially conservative. But politically and economically most of them are big government socialists that will vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.

Yea, I guess I don't get it.
Most hard working decent people I've run into from south of the border are way more conservative than lib.

I liked the reroute idea to a certain degree even though there would still be a lot of heavy truck traffic on the boulevard.
However, Central 70 is a done deal, but I still don't get why Colorado doesn't use the greatest invention ever, "Texas Turnarounds."

They would rather build those ridiculous cloverleaf intersections

I'm looking this up right now. I haven't seen any ariel photos yet, but the way it's described sounds a lot like a clover style exit.
Actually, now that I think about it, when I was in Dallas last summer, I walked to a restaurant and encountered this style of turn around.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_U-turn
Here's a decent article with some history.
https://www.wired.com/story/texas-turnaround-intersection/
The answer to the question is that every interstate in Texas has frontage roads for every mile of interstate, which makes the Texas Turnaround possible.
Yeah, the frontage roads are great. They allow through traffic and allow local access. If there's a problem shutting down the highway, route traffic onto the frontage road and then back onto the highway at the next on-ramp. It's extremely flexible.
Then again, Texas A&M actually monitors and recommends changes to improve traffic conditions.
https://mobility.tamu.edu/
This state can't even coordinate traffic signals to keep traffic moving on major roadways.
Yea, I guess I don't get it.

Well, you've filtered your results. ;)
There's also a generational influence that changes. Cuban immigrants are a great example. They came here with nothing, worked their assess off, and are very conservative. Go back and look at the presidential election results in and around Miami from 1980s-1990s. Look at it now. It's flipped. First gen Cuban-Americans are very supportive of collectivism.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/nov/04/miami-cubans-midterm-elections-voters
These are the direct descendants of the folks who had an up close and personal look at Communism and fled for their lives.
If people who are no longer first generation residents of their country are a problem (and I'm not saying I disagree) then I've got some upsetting news for everyone.
So. Our family moved to CO on year 1993 and it was before Rockies first season.
On the radio.
First Rockies strike out
First Rockies base hit/2b/3b/hr.
First Rockies this and that till about July.
Rockies this Rockies that....
Took me a while to open upto Rockies.

How'd the move go?
How'd the move go?
It went well! I got in to Austin on Tuesday, picked out an apartment and applied for it that night, was approved and moved in on Friday! My mattress set got trashed, sadly, so I slept on the floor that night, then a new bed arrived on Saturday. I don't have any living room furniture, so the TV is sitting on some boxes and I chill in a beach chair, lol! I have some furniture coming in this week to improve that, but I still need to find a couch. I'll post up some photos tonight.
I like the apartment complex. It's set back a ways in some woods, so its very quiet, but only about a 10 minute drive to work.

Congratulations, brother. I remember those days when I first moved to CO, totally on my own with next to nothing except some money to live on while I looked for work. It was a very "freeing" time of my life. Sounds like you're off to a good start being in a good place with your job close by. Best of luck to you!

You like auto racing, and at least you have some local options there (including F1). Congrats on the re-lo!
Glad to hear the move went smoothly!

It's not a real move if you don't sleep on the floor at least one night!
Makes your back feel extra special after lifting boxes/furniture all day.

Thermarest, wool blanket (and maybe a woobie), lawn chair, and TV/computer monitor on cinder block tables. Nothing more required for a bachelor.
