Mindless lemmings who have zero actual thought processing and critical thinking capability...
https://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/local-news/from-detour-to-disaster-google-maps-got-dozens-of-colorado-drivers-in-a-mud-mess-on-sunday
Dozens of drivers hoping to find a quicker route around a crash on Pena Boulevard on Sunday found themselves in a muddy mess.
But Google says it will be OK.
So what would you have done? Everything was fine until it wasn't and no one could turn around.
I would have been very wary because I've tried to drive through, and gotten stuck in mud before. This was a great learning experience for a lot of people. Now they know.

You can always stop and not proceed into the mud or other non-driveable terrain features.

If people will live and build near a plutonium processing plant site, they will do anything!

Thread title is misleading.
It wasn't the GPS that was stupid.
Bad carpenters blame their tools and all.

Yep, and when the self driving cars are run by the same tools, we will still blame the passengers for the inability to think?

Hahahaha. I laughed hard when I saw this in the news this morning along with all the pictures of the dummies out of their cars scratching their heads.
I been out there. It's pretty darn easy to see that the pavement is ending and it's not a real road anymore.

Well played, sir.
Don't learn how to read a map. Just listen to the little voice on the fondleslab. WINNING!
When you guys shift your truck into drive in the morning, do you put on the parking break, get out, climb under the truck and verify that the truck is actually in drive, or do you just trust the machine that almost never lets you down?
I work with computers for a living. I don't give in to letting a computer handle the basics and overriding my common sense.
Anybody with a brain would know that driving into a field on a single lane dirt road is not what these apps are meant to do.
Besides, putting a vehicle in Drive and getting out of it is always a bad idea.
I was once trying to go from Wiggins, CO to Stratton, CO. It's mostly dirt roads. There was a big mud puddle that I thought I'd get stuck in, so I went back the way I came and added an extra hour to my drive and was late for my appointment. That part of the country looks exactly like just East of DIA. Realistically, one should never have to take a dirt road to an international airport in the United States. I suspect that most people got into that situation because they say 99 other vehicles doing the same thing and assumed it was going to be okay.
Have you ever followed a line of cars through a detour route rather than actually navigating by the signs because you knew that everyone else was going the same way you were?
No.
Then again, I'm not a fan of 'herd mentality'. Logic and rational thought are personal character flaws.
That's actually pretty funny.
...and not one lifted Wrangler with a winch was out there to help them. tsk tsk.
They were probably all gathered in a parking lot talking about off-roading and vehicle recovery.

I understand following the Google suggested detour. Makes sense.
I understand following other cars doing the same thing. Makes sense.
I DO NOT understand following the car in front of you into a mud hole or water filled trench. Does NOT make sense.
No critical thinking skills to determine when the plan has gone off the rails- "Keep driving Honey, the GPS says this is where we need to go."
When we trudged our way through a blizzard going over the pass coming back from Moab in April, one of the, many, vehicles just stopped in a lane of travel and holding up traffic, was a Rubicon on 35"s.

I have to question how many vehicles were actually stuck in the mud. For cars to get so far through a mud puddle to allow 99 cars to get stuck behind them, are they really stuck? Hopefully that story was created with full journalistic integrity.

I trust my eyes...
Let me ask you, if you were happily driving along following your GPS to one of the largest airports in the country, and you saw this ahead, would you maybe stop and think to yourself, "you know, this doesn't look right."
"Sure, it looks like it goes through to Jackson Gap road on the map...but maybe I should turn my Prius back around and pay the $1.25 to pop on 470..."

That looks like where the adventure begins.
Someone's gonna die of dysentery, but dangit Pa, we're gonna make it to Oregon. There's protests to be had!
If they polled the audience that got themselves into that situation with the question "What does the name "Donner Party" mean to you?", the prevailing answer would probably be:
"That sounds like fun. I like parties."

Ten years ago, this exact scenario was satire.
I remember a commercial years ago with an elderly couple headed for a cliff. I think it was an insurance commercial. I'll have to see if I can find it.
There was also the problem with Apple Maps in Australia. Was routing people into a wilderness area where they would get stuck in the sand and without a cell signal to call for help.
ETA: Couldn't find the commercial I was remembering, but did find this one from 2012:

A local Minneapolis Saturn dealer commercial from 2009:

That's so perfect! In Michael's defense, his other option was letting Dwight be right.
probably the first time most of them have ever been "off roadin'".[ROFL3]

Now you're on 'a list'.
I never have complete trust in any mechanical or electronic device. The GPS in our motorhome has on a number of occasions tried to send us across a cornfield. I chose to override that route option for one more...paved.
Now you're on 'a list'.
I NEVER SAID IT WAS FULL OF EELS!

Of consideration, assuming most people were going to DIA for scheduled flights or to pick people up returning from scheduled flights. I'm pretty sure anyone here would've taken a detour even if it is county dirt roads. You going to sit in traffic for four hours and guarantee missing your flight? The problem isn't the road per se, it's the weather associated with the road. Undoubtedly some didn't have experience with it, but I bet you quite a few did.
If you're driving somewhere on a tight schedule, and you're faced with a) Wait here and guarantee it costs you $500-$5,000, or b) try that and MAYBE you get there on time - and you see something that is "sketch", are you a little more inclined to grit your teeth and hope for the best, or do you flip a 180 and add four hours to your trip... which in this situation, probably guarantees a cost of $500-$5,000 depending on where they are flying (and how many)...
Ignoring other vehicles for a moment - I think all the high's and mighty's here would gamble and see if their car could make it, especially if it looked marginally possible.
And that has little to do with GPS... if you saw the same road on a map you'd probably try it. It's not like they shut their eyes, hit the gas and said "ALEXA HOVERCRAFT MODE"
Disclaimer/ETA: Didn't read the news article. I have seen google route on some interesting roads out in the middle of nowhere. "Turn left here" (e.g. drive clean through the middle of a hermit house with strong murder vibes). So yeah, if people did an "office" and drove right into the lake, then you guys can call them stupid.

I am not quite sure why this is hard to figure out.
I am not criticizing people using their GPS to find a different route to the airport because of an accident blocking traffic.
I am not criticizing people using dirt roads to complete this detour. I live on a dirt road and drive dirt roads all the time.
I am criticizing people who, once the impassibility of the route was demonstrated, continued to press forward in a mentally challenged attempt to get through.
When in doubt, power out.
I learned that from a Jeep guy.

Now take that picture and add 45 cars ahead of you already, and 30 more behind you. Does it look as sketch? Can you even tell? Cars ahead still moving? Then party on!
