View Full Version : Need binocular and rangefinder purchase feedback
I'm looking at both right now. Do any of you have experience with these: Vortex Optics Fury HD Gen II Rangfinding Binocular 10x42mm? I like that Vortex is one of the few that offer their VIP warranty on electronics as well as the optics. I like the idea of having them combined too, but would I get an inferior product by getting the combined technology? It's a lot of money for these so would like some feedback before spending it on something that won't work well.
My Requirements:
Rangefinder on soft targets out to 1,000 (I can use my MRAD reticle, but I would like a quick acquisition device that works well especially for hunting when I carry my lighter rifles)
Optical clarity that will allow me to distinguish sex of the animal (pronghorn and bigger) out to 800 (1000 would be nice)
Durability in terms of handling being bumped around hunting as well as weather resistant
I recently bought the Nikon Black 4K And don't think it meets any of your requirements.

They (Vortex Fury) are solid, the Rangefinder is very good, the glass is good but not great. Another one to look at in that price range is the Sig Kilo 3000 BDX ($1200) I haven't put my hands on a set yet but early reviews are very positive. Stevenc23 on here did a head to head comparison between the two and threw in the Terrapin X along with them and IIRC settled on the Sig might PM him for his opinion I know he's owned Leica Geovids in the past and knows the capabilities of the higher end stuff for comparison.
Swarovski and Leica both have far superior glass, but the rangefinders are about the same and maybe not quite as good as the Vortex and the Sig, but they are significantly more expensive. The new Zeiss Victory RF is definitely badass as well, but again, expensive.

Thank you for the info.; it was helpful. I definitely looked at the Sig, and read a lot of the reviews on it; I was very tempted to go in that direction. I went ahead and ordered the Fury because it has generally good reviews, the warranty, and Midway has them on sale for $979. I hope they are clear enough to see the black patch on pronghorn at 800. If they can do that, then I will be happy. I would love to have Swaros, but that is way outside my budget.
.....my current binos are an old (mid 1980s) Bushnell; anything is a step up from that...lol

I ran the Vortex Fury 5000 at the Steel Safari this year. 3 day match, where finding and properly ranging target is probably the most important thing. The Fury did great! The range finder is fast and super accurate. I simply don't think you can beat them for the price. The glass is pretty good, but not like the Euro brands (Leica/Swaro/Zeiss), but those are at least 2x-3x the price.
I spoke with Stevec23 about all of them, he thought that the SIG & Vortex are probably the same. Same glass, same laser, same factory, etc. I believe the Nikon LRF bino are the same too. It sounds like the SIG has a little better technology (bluetooth/BDX/AB) in their bino, Vortex does not. Vortex warranty is the bee's knees though.
I would base it on what is most important to you. Glass quality, ranging capability, technology, warranty and service.
Glass Quality? Go Euro.
Tech features? Go SIG
Warranty and pure ranging? Go Vortex

Thank you; good to know that Fury ranging is solid; that was what I was concerned about.
I’m testing a pair of Fury’s this weekend at the team challenge in Douglas. Just screwing around with them, the ranging seems outstanding. Way better than my Leicas. The glass seems totally acceptable.

I was actually shocked at the quality of the glass on the fury's when looking through a friend of mine's (same set delfuego used at the safari) Bullet trace isn't out of the question if properly positioned with them whereas some others like the Bushnell's it's not going to happen. Shockingly good for the price. I run Leica's and they are unbelievable glass but the laser IMHO leaves a bit to be desired for the price point.

I just bought a pair of these after using them back in the Vortex Extreme. I was very impressed with the ranging, hitting grass hills at 1600 yards easily. There wasn?t a good spot to range further than that from the demo tent.
The Vortex guys said the glass quality is on par with their Viper level HD glass.
