View Full Version : Denver capturing, killing geese to feed families in need
The geese should have declared themselves illegal immigrants from Canada. Maybe they would have been given sanctuary status.
Denver capturing, killing geese to feed families in need (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/denver-capturing-killing-geese-to-feed-families-in-need/ar-AADBHgr)
DENVER - For a number of years, Denver Parks and Recreation has struggled to manage a growing goose population.
They've tried scaring the geese away, even coating their eggs in cooking oil to prevent fertilization. Now, they're trying something new: catching the geese with help from the United States Department of Agriculture, and shipping them off to be "processed."
The geese, said Scott Gilmore, deputy executive director of Denver Parks and Recreation, are being collected now because at this time of year they can't fly. Then, they are taken to a processor.
"And they are getting processed, and they're getting donated to needy families," Gilmore said.
Gilmore would not comment on where those geese are being processed, or where the meat goes when it's done.
His department estimates about 5,000 geese have set up permanent residence in the mile high city.
"The geese populations within the city have just exploded," Gilmore said. "We get so many complaints about people coming out here with a blanket to sit on the grass, and they cannot sit on the grass because there's so much goose poop in the parks."
Denver partnered with the USDA earlier this month to begin culling the birds. It's unclear how many have been killed so far, but Gilmore said the goal was never to eliminate geese from Denver parks.
Still, not everyone is on board with the plan. The FOX31 Problem Solvers talked with residents at Washington Park Friday.
"I've been here many years, I don't really see it as a problem," said one neighbor. "In fact, I think they're kind of cute."
Others expressed concerns over the safety of eating the geese.
"This is crazy," said another neighbor. "I don't know why somebody would want to do that."
Gilmore said other cities have been doing this for a number of years.
The USDA sent the following statement:
"The resident goose population in this area is too large, which will cause many problems including overgrazing of grass, ornamental plants and agricultural crops; accumulation of droppings and feathers; disease, attacks on humans by aggressive birds; and the fouling of reservoirs, swimming areas, docks, lawns, and recreational areas."
Goose poop in parks, bad. People poop in parks, that's OK.
Can't wait for the animal rights folks to have a conniption fit about feeding needy people.
Sounds like a sensible program to me... I have zero issue with it, assuming they’re not spending millions to ship them off elsewhere.
Shit, pay for the shipping and ill provide my time and Ammo. But I get to keep any bands.
I guess what they are doing should be a warning to the homeless population. With as jacked up as our state is getting to, you never know what some of these bastards will come up with.
"... coating their eggs in cooking oil to prevent fertilization."
No, coating the eggs kills the developing embryo within.
Do they not know how reproduction works, or are they afraid to say how oiling eggs actually works?
Good way to provide food.

And we wonder where regimes like North Korea get the idea that American cities are devoid of birds because the poor ate them all.

My old roomate "hunted" a goose in a denver city park and ate it. He told me it wasn't very good and was real greazy. Likely from eating french fries and pizza. He also said that wild goose has a better more earthy flavor than a city goose.

The animals in urban environments always seem to look worse than their wild counterparts. I don?t doubt it tasted off. But geese and ducks have a layer of fat under their skin that is very rich. If not rendered correctly can cause it to seem greasy.
No different than humans- animals sitting around all day eating things they shouldn?t messes with their bodies.

Not even close, flavor wise. IMO, goose is dry compared to duck.

"Feeding them Cheetos will spoil the meat" said the homeless man as he drank wine from a Pringles can...
Was he drinking Ripple or Night Train from that Pringle?s can? Or maybe something homemade that was strained through a pair of his favorite lucky socks?

I talked to a Canadian hunter a few weeks ago and asked him if he’s eaten Canada geese and what it tastes like. He told me it’s similar to turkey. I’ve heard, like many of you, that it tastes like bugs and mud so I don’t know what to believe. If one ever lands on my property I’ll let you know the real deal.
Like many things I’m sure the flavor is effected a lot by how it is handled after it has been shot.
Shoot the goose, it falls in the mud, you let it sit on the ground in the middle of a field in the sun on a warm day for hours while you finish up your hunt, it eventually gets gutted and some method of plucking / defeathering is used, finally some guy that doesn’t know how to cook pits it on your plate..
Or, it gets shot, the hunter guts it right away and puts it in a cool location, they pluck it as soon as the hunt is over and is placed in a cooler, a person with extensive cooking experience creats a complex dish out of it.
One guy is going to tell you it tasted like rubber, another guy is going to tell you it was the best thing they have ever eaten.

Am I the only one that is shocked that the city and county of Denver, of all places, is taking this step? I can't believe that the animal lovers aren't screaming to high heaven in protest for killing the poor innocent birds for no good reason. Where's PETA, they must be biting their tongues?
I guess I find it hard for me to believe that I can actually agree with something the city is doing.

There actually is some outrage on the socials over this. But I think the progressive conscious is stuck between a rock and a hard place. You can't say hunger and homelessness is a problem and then prioritize problem animals over the homeless.
I'm 99% sure I've eaten far worse in my lifetime than badly prepared goose. But I don't think I've tried it. Duck and pheasant yes.
The only goose I'm consuming...

When the city of Colorado Springs was looking at reducing the deer numbers thru limited archery hunting...they cried that these deer were seen as their pets. But they didn't cry too much when the plan was to pay a contractor to kill and dispose of them.

LOL. Probably spin from non-hunters. There are people who will tell you that every species is inedible for any number of reasons. Something not tasting delicious and not being fit for human consumption are two different things. A pox on the person/organization trying to convince people that geese aren't fit for human consumption.

Well that tangent stalled the thread... apologies.
It's okay. We don't all have to goose step to a strict regime of thread discussion.
it's been several years since I did any water fowl hunting, and at the time I made jerky out of the geese and it was pretty good. My elk hunting partner is big into waterfowl hunting and tells me I would give up coyote hunting if I just had a good recipe for them. From what he described as prep for the dinner table, it was quite an extensive prep but the end result, according to him, is quite delicious.
Last time I hunted for goose was a long time ago. Cajun friend of my dad took the ones we shot to make gumbo.
Then again, a cajun will make gumbo out of ANY'TING.
We know a girl who has gone HAM on rescuing animals and feeding strict all meat diets. Thus, she has a few freezers in her living room and they are full of Canadian geese that I believe she goes out and hunts herself.

Homers, whether ducks or geese, are grossly inferior to migrators as far as quality of meat.
While I don't waterfowl anymore, the only goose preparation I ever really cared for was a stroganoff one of our friends used to prepare for the annual Ducks Unlimited banquet.

I've heard that there is a noticeable difference between the greasey/muddiness of puddle ducks vs diver ducks, but have never hunted any water fowl. Perhaps both sentiments come from the same place?
it took em longer than I would've thought, but I caught on the news this weekend that "peace for the geese" people were out rallying for the cause. I guess some people don't mind stepping in goose crap, or do none of this group live in the area so really don't care where the geese crap?
If only we could get them to expand the program to include pigeons and collared doves...

Probably this. In my experience, most activists are only minimally (if ever) affected by the things they rally for/against. Once it gets in their backyard, their tune changes -- witness how many Commiepornians are now troubled by the issues of vagrants camping in SF or LA. Even when they ARE affected, their proposed solutions usually lack any connection to reality (I remember a discussion with an animal rights activist some 25 years ago about the increasing deer population near DC -- she wanted the MD and DC governments to use prophylactics on the deer rather than authorize a limited hunt).
I hunted waterfowl only a couple of times long ago and took one Canada Goose. We roasted it and it had the taste and texture of prime rib of beef. Over the years I've rescued numerous geese for CPW, most were wounded during season and landed in parking lots. The wildlife vet or rehabber often used them to feed rehab raptors or bears.
Just spay and neuter your deer if you want them as pets.
They're a renewable resource, like trees. Problem is, the activists won't allow them to be harvested. I'm all for the reintroduction of the top tier predators to limit the herd. Maybe they'll get a few of the activists as a side benefit.
Animals are a public resource. Sounds like some activists need to be reminded that they don't own the animals.

"Soylent Geese"
If only we could get them to expand the program to include pigeons and collared doves...
Pigeons were introduced to this country for people to eat Squab, which can be found on menus in very fancy restaurants. Squab is just pigeon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squab
Usually considered a delicacy, squab is tender, moist and richer in taste than many commonly consumed poultry meats, but there is relatively little meat per bird, the meat being concentrated in the breast.[3]:211, 214[20] Squab is dark meat, and the skin is fatty, like that of duck.[3] The meat is very lean, easily digestible, and "rich in proteins, minerals, and vitamins".[7] It has been described as having a "silky" texture, as it is very tender and fine-grained.[7][21] It has a milder taste than other game,[22] and has been described as having a mild berry flavor.[7] Squab's flavor lends itself to complex red or white wines.[22] The 1997 edition of Joy of Cooking cautions that if squab is cooked beyond medium-rare, its flavor becomes 'distinctly "livery"'.[23]
"Soylent Geese"That is GOLD right there.
Thank you Bert

Why you should never take a Lib seriously.
Good lord. Have none of the liberals ever had to dodge one of these cobra chickens when trying to go into a building? Back when I lived in Aurora, I was trying to go into the Municipal Courthouse and two of the damn things had made nests in the urns on either side of the steps. They'd hiss and snake their necks out, snapping at anyone that did not walk directly up the center of the staircase.

I can't claim the phrase- I heard a joke months ago, with the punch line referring to a Canada Goose as a "cobra chicken" and thought it was right on the nose so have been referring to them as such ever since.
I can't remember the joke itself, of course.
More people probably relate to Cobra Chicken than Sky Carp.
I always call them sky carp, but I sure love when a wad comes rolling it and my 12 ga gets hot enough to warm my hand on the barrel!
They are tasty in brats and any type of sausage!
