View Full Version : Irving's Dash Cam Video Thread
I've got enough dash cam videos that I can probably just start my own thread and keep them all in one place. I'll grab the other videos I've posted in the past and put them in here as well. **Disclaimer** I make no promises that any/every video will be super exciting like a Russian auto accident compilation. Also, this isn't exclusively for my stuff. If you guys have good dash cam videos, post them up!
Here is from today. This is Northbound Kipling looking at the I-70 overpass and you can see Eastbound traffic. At about 15 seconds (just after the RV goes by) a dump truck pulling a trailer slams into the guard rail. He subsequently looses a wheel that he expertly pins against the wall toward the end of the video. All civil engineers can celebrate because lives were saved today by that guard rail. When it happened I didn't see it, but I heard it. I was looking around trying to figure out what happened when I saw a bunch of dust coming off bridge and it looked like a big chunk of concrete was missing. Just as I was getting onto the highway thinking about how I'll need to review the video (and hoping it didn't get dropped), I saw the wheel rolling down the on-ramp.

Wow you have a lot of crap happen in front of you. I just get stupid drivers that try to hit me and then I get pissed and honk at them. I really need a train horn.
Notable things I've seen but crap camera dropped was a lady pulled over on the highway at an underpass where there isn't really a shoulder, puking out the driver door. A lifted F-250 on big tires pulling a loaded trailer coming down a hill and the front tire started wobbling in a way where you knew it was seconds until it flew off. I was passing him as it happened so I didn't see the result but I'm sure he had to come to a complete stop in the middle lane of I-25 NB right by Cabela's. One vehicle burnt to a crisp on the side of I-25, and another one completely engulfed in flames on the side of I-70 with traffic stopped for a mile behind it.
I already get to write off enough of my mileage as it is, but I wonder if someone else who drives around for a living bought a dash cam, started an LLC and corresponding YouTube channel, occasionally posted videos like this, then wrote off 100% of their miles as the business expense of collecting content for their Awesome Traffic Stuff LLC business and corresponding YouTube channel. As long as all your videos are monitized, you don't have to make any money to be a business.

So one time a few years ago I really screwed up and dropped a ladder on I-25 in traffic. I never posted the video because I can only take so much heat from the internet. Miraculously, no one hit the ladder, or crashed, or died. This screen shot is way more dramatic than the actual video, but it's the best thing captured by the camera by far (because no one got hurt). At the time it happened, I didn't remember much traffic around/behind me, but when I reviewed the video I about pissed down both legs just watching, and that's even after I knew everything turned out okay.
This was actually the first bounce.

That's interesting, because if I would have been running a dash cam over the past 20 years, some of the most exciting footage would have been dodging ladders, usually at night on poorly lit sections of highway.
The most exciting part of the video was of me almost getting rear ended when I stopped to get it out of the highway.
No one ever offers up stories of dropping ladders off of vehicles, but once I was telling my other ladder carrying friends, every single one of them had a similar story of the time they forgot to strap down their ladder. Only every single one of them just pretended they didn't notice and kept driving. I find that irresponsible so I picked mine up. I have good insurance for a reason and thankfully I didn't have to use it that day and it ultimately only cost me the cost of the ladder. I've never been more happy to spend an unplanned $350 in my life. I also quickly found a simple way to make sure that never happens again.
The guy on the motorcycle never even flinched by the way. He looked over like, "Huh, that's a thing that's happening."

Which dash cam are you using? I’ve been looking at them, but so many options out there.
I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L17EMP4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 from this thread https://www.ar-15.co/threads/155748-Dash-camera?highlight=dash+cam.
The video quality is good, but it glitches a lot and drops data. Right now I've figured out that when the camera comes on when I put the key in, once I start the vehicle, the rear dash cam actually locks up and only records sound over a paused rear video. It has options for 1, 2, and 3 minute loops. The truck crashing into the bridge that I posted today was part of a 22 minute video. I had to upload the entire video and cut it down to the relevant minute with YouTubes completely shitty editor. The only thing stopping me from buying a new, better camera is that it's such a pain in the ass to run the cables under the ceiling liner and behind all the interior panels for the rear camera.
My sister once lost a ladder on HWY 50 south of montrose (sat install tech at the time) a VW Bus was behind her and plowed straight over it going 55mph. She immediately pulled over, it (vw bus) slowed down slightly and then accelerate and kept going. They might have been high as hell for the way they acted. Might not have even been sure what they hit [ROFL1]

Somewhere in my vast inventory of random photos, I have a picture of three air horns mounted on a tractor trailer right next to the fuel tank, facing the next lane.
Back in my youth when I worked at Radio Shack, this guy came in looking at bull horns. He was like, "This is my car horn!," and right in the store proceeded to demonstrate to me by grabbing one and saying a bunch of lines into it like he was in traffic.
"Hey you cut me off asshole!"
"Stay in your own lane fucker!"
Etc.

I must have reached "bitter old man" status much earlier than most, as the idea of someone blasting a train horn from their car sounds repulsive, earth shaking bass systems get on my nerves, and hell, I can't even stand dual exhaust anymore. All that coming from a guy that used to have crazy stereos and dual exhaust.

Your videos have almost convinced me to get a dash cam. The amount of stupid I have seen in my time on the road is also vast.
You should. It immediately eliminates the he said/ she said. That of course puts the risk of one's own dumbassery being found out, but I suppose the key is to offset that w/ not being a dumbass.
I used to be an auto liability claims adjuster, and while dash cams were not nearly as popular back then, every single claim where one was involved made it VERY clear how much people were either wrong about what they remembered, or we straight up lying. Very useful.
Pro tip: if you get in a car accident and you have obvious cameras installed (like suction cup style) your first move imho should be to rip em off and chuck them under the seat. Even if the other party is clearly at fault. Having professional experience.... Never broadcast what key evidence you have to LEO or to opponents. Let your opponents dig their own grave and give yourself an opportunity to review and backup the evidence first. You never know when you may have just collided with the teenage kid of a LEO for instance... Anytime they know what you have they can modify their story in advance, or in rare cases they can just remove your Trump card from the board. Instead, let them invent their fiction and get locked into it. And review your video to see if you reeeally want to use it anyway (maybe you were joking with your spouse about something you don't want public... never know)
That is a point I often think about. was I just driving like an asshole a few minutes before, but unrelated to what happened? If anyone gets a hold of that, they'd try to use that. However, that's more for lawyers and court when serious injury is involved. When it comes to general he said/zie said stuff without courts and lawyers, whatever video you provide is key and completely controlled by you. Can make being pulled over more comfortable as well.
I captured me getting pulled over for speeding in Nebraska once, but I don't think I saved that video.
Just for Skanker, here are some videos with more talking, just not dash cam.

I got pulled over by a cop today for some odd reason. Wider right turn. Told me that I took a 3 lane right turn. It is impossible to take 3 land right turn on that large street, let alone difficult to do a right turn at the major intersection.
Gave me a ticket for a wrong crap.
I can't even fight this, because I have no dash cam.
After today, I am going to shop for a dash cam.
Shit really?

I have a dash cam, which I got after Irving’s older posts. Nothing post-worthy. And I keep the microphone off, not sure if good or bad. But I’m glad I have it.
I should probably get one for the company truck. I would have a good close up of the broad side of a civic that I almost broadsided crossing highway 34 just east of Greeley today. I?m coming through the intersection on a green light and the guy turned right in front of me. I hope he pooped a little. Fucker.

I see it done almost every day....... From the RT acceleration lane to the far left lane in 50 feet, no matter if someone is there or not. And if everyone is lucky, the jerk’s turn signal will flash once or twice.
It is usually the mid-life crisis age, higher dollar sporty type car driver that think they own the road......... [Tooth]
That?s why I got a 12 year old Cobalt commuter car so I wouldn?t be tempted to drive like an ?A? hole.
I also use a dash cam to help me stay calm and defensive.

Would have been handy this evening with two vehicles pulling out right in front of me while I am doing 40 to 60 mph.
My dash cam came with a remote button I mounted on the back side of my phone holder. Press once to take a still pic, hold to lock that video segment. It also has crash/parking sensor detection that's supposed to lock a video automagically.
It's a Veckle mini0906 and comes with a rear camera. I've been happy with it in the year or so I've had it. https://www.amazon.com/Veckle-Channel-Dashboard-Recorder-Recording/dp/B0746BCFBF
I keep the mic on mine turned off because if I do review the video, I am always swearing like a sailor at people.

That sounds all too familiar. I 'talk' to the vehicles and it's usually saltier than my human interactions.
If you pay attention, the vehicles will often reveal the 'body language' of the nut behind the wheel. When my wife is with me, I'll say "This jackwagon is about to come over into our lane."...and then they do it. "That jackass isn't paying attention. They're probably jacking around with their phone." You can tell by the random over-corrective movements instead of maintaining a smooth course. You drive by and glance over...and they're playing with their phone. I wish it wasn't this way, but it is. Like circuit breakers and safety pamphlets on hair dryers.

^^ Spot on. An asshole driver will almost always broadcast his/her intentions to do something stupid.
I'm thankful that I don't have to drive in any more traffic then I do. I easy commute has enough drama in it that I find myself "talking" to other drivers plenty as is, no need for more stress. No shortage of people that should NOT be allowed behind the wheel of a pedal car, let alone anything that goes faster than what they can pedal.

TL;DR we need more bike lanes. Right?
Just don't speed on a bicycle in a Denver park or bike path. 15 mph means 15 mph. [Police]

... I put a 'DIS' sign in the back window right infront of their '-Courtesy Vehicle' decal. Wish I'd thought to take a picture.
I do drive a bit impatiently, my favorite thing to grumble is: it's not going to roll over lady so turn the bloody corner already...
Oh & while speaking with the owner of the dealership I offered to go out to his vehicle, pop the hood, pour just half a quart over his engine computer et al. & then see how he felt about letting the service department clean it with the same diligence as they did mine... funny he declined, twice.

That brought back an old memory of my mother. She drove a '59 Rambler Station Wagon with the Push Button Transmission.
She admitted to sometimes driving it at 85 mph on the highway and had no fear.
Her daydream was to have iron bumpers to push people through the intersections that were a little slow on the take-off.
I do miss her humor.

Winner! Seems some idiots have to come to near a complete stop to make a right turn. "Better slow it down...don't want to roll it." [facepalm] I somehow seem to magically be able to pull into my neighborhood at the posted speed of 25 mph.
Another fave is idiots slowing drastically to then move into a long left turn lane. "Dude, get the hell out of the through lane and then slow it down." Should be entertaining with a world of narcissists that have no understanding of how they affect others past the end of their nose.

I know when I get a load of gravel or wet sand in my poor truck I drive like a great-grandpa from Italy who drove only three wheel micro cars until coming to America last week. But that's partially because I creatively exceed my weight limits and assume if I hit a bump or go around a corner more than 5mph my rear leaf springs will bend into leaf sprungs.
That's like towing that 35' lift with my short wheelbase Amigo with no sway bars installed and the lift weighed almost as much as the Amigo. Good thing the highest speed limit road I drove on was only 40 and it was raining the whole time so I stayed around 35.

If I'm paying for a professional, accidents shouldn't happen.

As annoying as this is I am bothered more by the way they?ll put in a left turn lane about the length of two small cars in a 45mph zone. Since there?s no way I can get my truck from 45+ to stopped in thirty feet it only leaves me two options- start slowing early or cross the solid line before I get to the turn lane. I usually choose option B because I?m courteous and don?t feel the need for everyone behind me to have to slow down because some road/city planner is an idiot.

The result of a van hitting what looked like a new-in-box refrigerator on west bound I70 east of Sheridan yesterday
We passed by shortly after it happened.

Well, I had one negative comment on my YouTube channel about the motorcycle video. Now some guy picked up my video and put it at the front of his compilation video (the rest of which sucks, by the way). The comments shitting on me are already starting to roll in. I hope it doesn't get out of hand. I should just save face and take it down.
What are they butt hurt about?

"I ain't paying for no steenking delivery! I have an SUV!"
The more of these videos I watch, the more I love how boring my life is.
I've been driving for 50 years, driven thousands of miles all over the US for work, seen a lot of bizarre things. Accidents, stupid shit, things flying through the air - hard to remember them all, won't even try to explain them. Many times I wish I'd had vehicle cameras, which hadn't even been invented.
Nowadays, I'm just thankful that my driving is minimal, and my exposure to all that is far smaller.

Changing lanes in front of the bike.

I wasn't in Colorado long as I recall, but driving down I-25 SB one day heading home after a day on the road, hauling ass in the left lane and here comes a NB car across the center barrier doing end-over flips right heading right for me near 6 or 8th ave area. Missed me by >< that much.

Yeesh! Scariest experience of mine was about 3am, eastbound on I-70, coming up Vail Pass in a blizzard. Suddenly, right in front of me, was a jacknifed semi, sliding backwards down I-70. I was already in the left lane, so I was able to dart left against the wall and just missed the tractor. I can still see the drive wheels spinning, trying to get traction.
Came too close that night. If I'd been in the right lane it would have been bad. In a Jeep Liberty vs a jacknifed truck......
I got a cheap AEE Action cam (under $30) with enough storage space to cover about 2days of filming. Only thing is that I need to microusb plugged to run all day. quality is not actually bad. Only thing is that I need to manually turn it on and off. Sometimes I forget to do it.
Not videos, but the other day I saw this guy that looked like he tried to cut from I-270 to I-70 and got stuck in the mud. So close...

Saw this guy today on I-25. Not sure what this is about, but I have a feeling it is someone that is super salty about having been rear-ended in the past.

I would have thought Ferrier.
I could see that. Just never seen it before and couldn't think of a trade that would drive around like that.
This thread should be a reminder to turn on the dash (action) cam every day. I forgot today.
Reason I bought the cam was that I got a ticket which I did not deserve.

The metal frame on the right in the back window reminds me of a stubby welding cart/hand truck.
Plus the Texas sticker. Everyone knows that everyone in Texas knows all about horses.

Idk about that.
Im not even sure a welding 'cart' & ferrier go together.
I think ferriers forge weld, maybe.

Hah! That reminded me of a time I saw a New York State Trooper on the I-90 Thruway try to whip across the median to go after someone and FOOMP! - buried in the snow up to the floorpans! That was priceless.
Idk about that.

Pretty sure ferrymen forge waterways... Farriers are known for hoofing it. [beatdeadhorse][cigar][Coffee]

Maybe he is mobile blacksmith. Forges do not seem to lend themselves to portability, maybe he has figured out work around with torch/weld rig.

Its like chemo brain only different -- knew it wasn't right but kept typing anyway. Thanks for the correction.
Just bustin' chops a bit...
