Colorado Licensed Journeyman Plumber. Currently unemployed.
I'm 35 and I've had a job since I was 15. Never been out of work untill these last 12 months. I've been laid off 3 times in the last year.
Since my wife still has her job with HP (thank God), I've been playing Mr. Mom......[LOL]
I have been in the autobody industry for the last 20 years. Worked at a couple of shops when I was back in Chicago, then owned a German restoration and collision shop the last 8 years I was there. I have since relocated here to Colorado, and I am now an Account manager for a national paint and body equipment distribution company.

Dr. Fwd and Marlin,
Are you guys self employed or do you work for someone else? Do you guys do remodel work or new construction? Maybe a combination of both? I'm just wondering if the job market in the Denver area is better for us construction guys than it is down here in Pueblo. I'm going to start looking in the Springs again. I hate the commute, but a guy has to go where the work is. I'm just curious about your experiences with staying employed in this economy. It's been rough on the trades in southern Colorado lately...
@GreenScout do you do framing and drywall? I have two storage rooms in my basement that are partially framed/drywalled and I'd like to get the rest of it done. Might as well give the work to a shooter who needs it.
@vim is your username like VIsual editor iMproved? I use vim on a daily basis to do all my work. I have at least three putty windows with vim open at this moment. Wasn't sure if it was this obscure text editor or initials or something... you don't meet many vi guys anymore.

Yep, that's 50%; the other 50% is from a college fight song.
vim is my regular editor; back in the day vi was reliably on systems where you'd have to download/compile emacs. When flitting from system to system doing sysadmin tasks, vi was what you needed to know.
Well if you know vim you know vi, right ;) I was doing HTML using pico in 1995, and they said, "We will promote you from tech support to web development, but only if you learn to use 'vi'" ... and I've been using it (or vim) every since.

Electrical I work for somebody else,, actually I work for CLP, kind of contract labor stuff.. At the moment hard to say,, Some of My still working contacts are saying they've been doing short weeks. But, that was a couple of months ago.. The guys I'm working for now,, sound like They're just busy enough,, But they also have let people go also..
I do both, though I haven't seen anything "new" in awhile..
As far as the rest of them go,, I'm just a semi-pro,, Although I do seem tho have a natural talent for most anything I have tried.. Heck,, I even figured out Crown moulding,,, Didn't do too bad on it..

I still use vi - sorta like it, but then I'm an old command line kinda guy. Back when I was active duty (USAF) I was officially a programmer, but rarely coded but I did manage a web development shop for a while. I came to realize that I hated programming and web dev. I played AF cop for a while and Security Manager and Facilities Manager. I enjoyed my times as a cop and Security Manager the most but went back to IT because that's where decent salary was.
I'm not surprised there are so many "computer types" on the board. I think it reflects just how much of the business world now depends on those pieces of metal and their software and their maintenance. In '94, the World Wide Web was just a spinoff of the latest protocol, succeeding gopher and all its cronies (veronica). Who would thunk it, to have this can't-work-without-the-web (and google) world 15 years later?

Its not only a sweet gig, but being a good manager ensures that I have great job security and top picks at new jobs. Most managers have their heads up their ass and don't let their guys do their job, and don't talk to their guys enough to get the most out of 'em.
Also I think mine is the only warehouse where you'll hear the manager teaching one of his temps about the basics and differences between Plato and Aristotle.

14 years Air Force. 14 years police officer. 8 years gun shop owner. 1 year half-assed retired. Damn...that kinda sounds like I can't hold a job!
Here's something I thought was funny and worth posting in this thread for any other retired guys that might see it:
__________________________________________________ ____________
ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND
It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.
My name is Ron. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Carol Anne. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Carol Anne to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work.
Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner.
I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.
Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points.
When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too.
I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Carol Anne. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.
Signed,
Ron
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Ron died suddenly on January 31 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife Carol Anne was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that Ron, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

I own a small cabinet shop. We do mostly residential, but also some commercial. At the moment, we do most anything....
OK, if the avatar doesn't let the cat out of the bag I have some really nice waterfront real estate in Arizona I'll sell you at reasonable rates...[ROFL1]
I do Non-Destructive Inspection on Fighters. I also run the Marksmanship program for the unit that flies those fighters, or what there is of one with our ops tempo being what it is the last couple years. I help my wife and M-I-L with their two stores (maintenance and such). And to use up the rest of that pesky free time between jobs and sleeping, I'm running a Bullseye Pistol league for a local gun club. Anyone want to shoot some Bullseye? Let me know. Oh, yeah, and I have two small economic liabilities, uh, I mean, children. I'm confident they count as at least a part time job!
I know a couple of other pilot types other than Sniper7 (I think) who are good shots as well. One of them is with United, the other is fairly high up the food chain at Frontier, or he was before the Republic buyout...not sure now.
Oh-oh... could I get a flight in a fighter? Lol, when my dad was still active he took me up in an Apache... talk about poopin the pants. Brother got the Abrams ride though... Still think I won with the whirlybird, lol. A jet I think would be a blast!
Tell me more about the pistol league. I have a few that haven't had time to see the range in about a month.

My wife's been trying for a ride since she was my girlfriend. I did manage to get her hooked up with a tanker ride, and into the cockpit on takeoff. That, I'm afraid, will have to do her. We don't even get rides anymore, unless of course you're one of the, uh, "favored few", shall we say? Or some sort of high powered civilian, politician, sports figure, you know.
I did manage to get my ride some time ago. Did some low level from Ft Collins north, then some aerobatics around the NE part of the state. Did everything I could, managed to pull the 9G's with my own hand. The little ridges up through the mountains look a little different when you're upside down at 500 feet, too. (the pilot claimed we were at 500 feet. The altimeter told a different story...) That, and hitting a Grand Slam while sportfishing with two good friends in Hawaii, are probably the two most fun things I've ever done. At least, with my clothes on...
I'll PM you about the league.
I own a small electrical company. We mostly do commercial stuff. Right now we will do just about anything.

I asked him if he had any rubber clothes. He gave me a real quizzical look and said "No, why do you ask?"

The whole software development process is a joke. It's an art rather than a science. When architects can't specify, you'd better have local people working for you to fix it. When it goes far away it all falls apart. One of my co-workers is stuck on a probably doomed project. The requirements were vague in areas and actually contradicting in some but nobody caught it since it was so spread out. Now components written in Kazakhstan, China, Israel and France have to be integrated here and its been broken for months.

Own a retail awards shop. I make trophies and plaques and do all types of engraving (laser and diamond). Been doing this for forty years. Not much money in it these days but it's still an enjoyable job (greatest customers in the world).
I'm a one-man shop these days because of the economy.

Not usually. My laser is an older one without auto-focus, so if the part is flat I can probably do it. I do a lot of barrels for several gunsmiths around here, but I use the old pantograph and diamond engrave them.
I did put a Navy logo on a sideplate of a j-frame the other day for a friend. I used my new computer controlled engraver.
A little known fact I found out about several years ago; The ATF considers engraving as gunsmithing. Therefore, if a trophy shop keeps a firearm or receiver overnight, they are technically supposed to have an FFL. True or not, I don't keep anybody's gun overnight except my own.

Work in the cable industry...
I have owned 3 businesses 2 were building bikes and the other was building performance transmissions. My first business Bike Parts Source was building motorcycles and mainly restoring them and selling parts on Ebay. The second was ran out of my Garage so it never really got a name. And I still do it on the side when I can and have the time and feel up to it physically, it was building custom Choppers. I also was 1 of the owners of BP performance (BP Bullet Proof) rebuilding transmissions to factory specs or full out Racing. I have worked in the oilfield until I was injured. I also have worked in alot of shops through out the country. and did some bounty hunting in California. I currently have a nice position in a bank and it is a great Job that I really injoy doing. I do still own BP Performance we just have not advertised in a long time. Our quality and warranty for the type of work we did for the price pulled in more customers than we expected. I dont know if I will every start taking in new customers, but I do still honor the warrantied transmissions that are still out there. And I will rebuild transmissions for repeat customers that bring the transmission to me.
