This fella (I didn't sex it, so fella is used as a general descriptor here) was lounging in the pond, maybe dining on the tadpoles. I'm almost sure I've seen this type in the area before, but I'm having trouble coming up with an id for it.

Im leaning towards Garter as well. Its on the pale side but because the checkering is near perfect & they don't all have a bright stripe.

Agreed. You can tell by how it looks angry and is foaming at the mouth.
Plus, look at those curves!

Tastes like chicken..[Coffee]
I actually ran across a Google Image of Thamnophis elegans (referred to as a "Mountain Garter Snake") in water eating tadpoles at Yosemite National Park.
It was linked to this article: http://mister-toad.com/blog/2012/04/09/plump-tadpoles-and-a-hungry-snake/

Bad snek
Speaking of snakes. Anybody else ever hear of the axle grabbing variety? Was that maybe a Texas/Southwest *thing*?
