View Full Version : Looking for a truck rack to buy or borrow....

OK, I know it's a long shot but I figured I'd throw it out there.
I'm picking up my new-to-me (used) truck on Saturday. It's a 2018 F-150. We have a camping trip coming up the following Thursday and the wife really wants to take our two sit-on-top kayaks.
I'm going to put a topper on the truck, but the order time on most toppers is 3 - 4 weeks. In the meantime I need to figure out a way I can get 2 10' long, 65lb kayaks up to our campsite.
I'm looking for an inexpensive rack like this (since it will likely be a one-time use)

Does anyone have one they'd be willing to sell or better yet, to let me rent or borrow for a weekend? I shouldn't need it after Labor day since I hope (knock wood!) my topper would be in by then and I already have a Yakima rack that I can use with a topper.
If anyone knows of such a rack for sale, please let me know. Don't mind buying one but don't want to spend a lot of $$ either since I'll likely only be using it once and then it will go on CL.
Thanks in advance!
It will kill your bed space for other stuff but I bet if you left the tailgate down and just put the kayaks in on their sides and strapped them so they couldn?t slide out you could haul them just fine.
Or just get some framing 2x4s and cobble something together for this one trip.

Ive done that, but then I put cargo bars at either end of the bed as supports (above the kayak) & then tossed a sheet of plywood over the top for a deck. Worked like a charm.

Can't do that, pulling a trailer.

I'm not a master craftsman, but after looking around online I'm sure I can knock something out in a few hours with 2 x 4's that will work.
It's not like it has to cross the Rubicon trail. All it has to do is get 2 x 60lb kayaks to Stagecoach Reservoir and back. Once I get the topper on the truck the 'yaks will go on the Yakima rack on the topper.
Something like this:

It will probably look redneck as hell but as we say in the Army, "If it's stupid but it works - it isn't stupid." :D

Shouldn't that be "ain't stupid"?

“Ain’t” is definitely the correct word.
I also love that my autocorrect corrected aint to ain’t, even though ain’t ain’t a word.

Gonna pull a permit?
he doesn't need one unless he paints, or stains it. Then it has to conform to HOA guidelines.
Looks weird when it matches the house, but not the truck.

Only if you're from below the Mason/Dixon line and you're trying to speak the "Kaing's Ainglish." :D

I have the exact rack in your original post but the fuel and time getting and returning it probably doesn't make it worth while.

Rack Attack
5550 E Evans
says they offer rack rentals
You might call them and see what they can do
Never used them, never visited them, don't recommend them from experience
Just have seen their advertising

Never did business with them, but it is easy to find. Approximately 6 blocks east of I-25 (one block west of Holly) south side of Evans, look for the canary yellow 1956 Buick out front.
