View Full Version : Squished by elevator: Neither awesome nor funny.
https://nypost.com/2019/08/22/video-shows-moment-man-crushed-by-elevator-at-manhattan-promenade-building/
Guy killed by a malfunctioning falling elevator in NY, but not in the way you would expect. Viewer beware, link includes video. As it's not funny nor awesome, I didn't have a great place to put it.
Now the paranoid types will have to worry about yet another aspect of elevator rides.
RIP.
Can you describe the malfunction for us so we're not forced to watch someone die?

You can read the article without watching the video.
I read it and can't quite tell how it happened. Sounds like the elevator in question has a recent history of doing funky things and there may have been some sort of safeties that were overridden. I'm thinking next of kin will make some decent coin when this is all said and done.

* description follows *
Doors opened but the elevator apparently didn't stop completely or perhaps it did but then begun to travel again after the doors opened. One man just stepped off (safely) but another a man who attempted to get out just after wasn't fast enough to make it all the way onto the platform before he was pulled into the gap between the shaft & box as it continued downward. The doors closed.
Really terrible. Lots of witnesses.
[Edit] I made a revision to clarify a bit in the description above after Ray read it (comment to follow) btw. Apologies. My first draft was misleading.
Well by that description it sounds like the guy was a jackass and probably got what he deserved. I think I'd just ride it to wherever it stopped and not try and jump off the elevator while it was still in motion.

It happens in about 4 seconds. I dont believe he knew what was happening. Not really.

I guess you never know when your time is up. That sucks, though. Pretty rough way to go.
Sounds like the elevators in that building were a problem. Whatever that young man's estate was worth, it's about to be worth a metric shit-ton more.
I think his innate instinct was "I have to get off this thing it's going to fall" so as it was starting to go down, he was trying to get leverage to climb out. But there was only about a second to make a decision. There were apparently four other people (or five) that stayed in the elevator, and got stuck in it for a good amout of time, and as much as the deceased suffered, FTL too. I won't claim it would be worse to be in the elevator (because hey, they lived), but that's definitely something you'll never stop being able to think about. If there's non combat PTSD, that'd do it.
ETA: Human pretzel maker is an accurate description, unfortunately. I'm not sure that there's any lesson that could be gleamed other then "I hope I don't randomly die to some stupid shit someday".

Yeah, I don't think he did anything wrong given the circumstances. He acted instinctively. Unfortunately it just happened to quickly.
The video isn't graphic. If you knew he survived you wouldn't feel the same way about what you see. I don't think he was a "jackass", because the elevator did something it shouldn't. I find it difficult to Monday morning quarterback the guy.

Exactly.
Ok. After actually watching the video it doesn't look like any jackassery was involved. Looked like the door opened, one guy steps out, the other guy gets the first foot out and then down it goes.
This is why I tell my wife every morning before I leave the house that I love her. You just never know what your day will bring.

Nailed it.
I would likely have survived this incident thanks to being old and slow and having horrible reaction times. There's no chance of me even trying to catch myself. I would have just tumbled backwards into the elevator.
I guess getting old does have some advantages.

ETA: If I die from getting folded, my sense of humor asks someone to play that at my funeral.

It's amazing what the human body can endure. Generally, folding is not one of those things. One of the worst calls I ran involved a human folded in a spot not meant to be.
I thought this thread was going to be about a terrible cover band name. Now that I read it, I wish that it was.
I've been in some pretty sketchy elevators in my life, most of them in old buildings all over New York State. Some were pretty freakin' scary. Thank God those days are past.
My dad had a friend when I was a kid back in OK, that was in an old elevator that suddenly "broke", or whatever, and dropped several floors. Fucked him up pretty bad as I recall, I was really young then.
Definitely a rough way to check out. Getting folded up like origami by a heavy metal object is just horrific. That being said, I've always been worried about this with the elevators at the RTD facilities. Those elevators are garbage. There isn't a single day that goes by where we don't dispatch elevator techs out to do some sort of repair or maintenance on them.

Did not look like a good way to go out. Hopefully his family can find peace.
