Loveland school suspends teen over family gun outing; pics on social media
By Sherrie Peif 8/28/2019
Loveland ? A 16-year-old Loveland High School junior has been told not to come back to class until the school can conduct a full investigation into an anonymous tip to ?Safe-2-Tell? of a ?threatening? Snapchat by the student.
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, a Northern Colorado-based Pro Second Amendment organization, posted on Facebook that it would supply the family with legal representation if the student?s story ?bears out as first reported.?
Nathan Myers and his mother Justine Myers said the Snapchat video of several handguns was taken while the family was preparing to spend the afternoon at a shooting range on Tuesday. The caption on it: ?Finna be lit,? was simply Nathan?s way of saying he was excited to be out shooting with his family using slang in common use among his peers, Nathan said.
According to Urban Dictionary, an online crowd-sourced collection of slang definitions, the word ?finna? is also used in place of the word ?gonna,? and according to Meriam-Webster, ?lit? is slang for ?excited.?
Complete Colorado sent Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams the Snapchat with no context to what was happening and asked him how he would interpret the post, he said it appeared to him someone got a new gun and was excited to go shoot it.
When told of the outcome, Reams could not believe one person?s fears were causing such a shakeup for another. He said this is the perfect example of the damage the Red Flag Law could do.
?People base their apprehension on their own paradigm and their own fear of guns and gun culture,? Reams said. ?One kid is totally excited to go out and train on how to use a gun responsibly, while another kid is totally freaked out about seeing a gun.?
Justine said she and her husband took Nathan shooting yesterday because he hadn?t been in a while.
?We had a great day,? Justine said. ?This is what we do. Nathan has been shooting many times with us. We are huge Second Amendment supporters.?
Nathan, who lives full time with his father, said it was the first time he?d seen his mom in a couple of weeks and he was excited to go, which is what led to the Snapchat.
?While we were at her house getting ready to go, I took a video of five or six pistols and an AR-15,? Nathan said. ?None of them were loaded, they were all in their cases.?
However, when the family came down from the mountains, Nathan?s father had left several messages for Justine about police officers at his home questioning Nathan?s intentions.
?His father told them he was out shooting with me, I am an avid shooter,? Justine said. ?So, the officers said he wasn?t in trouble and left.?
When Nathan woke up Wednesday morning, the Thompson Valley School District (TVSD) had other ideas. They left a message telling his father Nathan should not to come to school until a full investigation could be conducted.
?I called to ask why I couldn?t go, and they said it was a safety concern because the student who reported it was scared I was going to shoot up the school,? Nathan said, adding, in three years at Loveland High School he has never had a conflict with another student.
Nathan admitted his not very focused on academics, but added he has a clean criminal record, and a full group of friends with no reason for anyone to be afraid of him. But what frustrated him the most, was the fact the school district wouldn?t allow him access to missed work.
?I already struggle in school enough as it is,? Nathan said. ?Missing a few days will really put me far behind.?
Thompson Valley School District spokesman Michael Hausmann said the district could not comment on the specific incident but included a link to the district?s policy on makeup work for a like situation (https://www.thompsonschools.org/cms/lib/CO01900772/Centricity/Domain/367/j/JKD-JKE-R.pdf). It says: ?Suspended students will be provided an opportunity to make up school work during the period of suspensions, so the student is able to reintegrate into the educational program of the district following the period of suspension. Students will receive full or partial academic credit to the extent possible for make-up work which is completed satisfactorily.?
Nathan has a 10 a.m. hearing on Thursday with the school district.
Reams said in this case, because of an anonymous tool for students to report their fears, a kid has now been adjudicated by the school district until he can prove his innocence for a crime he didn?t commit.
?This is exactly the mechanics of the Red Flag Law,? Reams said. ?Someone filed an anonymous complaint, without the other person knowing it was being filed, but instead of him being deprived of his Second Amendment rights, he?s being deprived of his ability to go to school without due process.?
This is not the first time TVSD and Loveland High School have called into question Nathan and his family?s support of the Second Amendment. When Nathan was a freshman, he was caught doodling a Glock 45 in class.
School resource officers pulled him out of class and told him he knew way too much about guns. He was not suspended that time, but school administration required his dad to sign a statement allowing him back into class, Nathan said. He has also been questioned about a Second Amendment sticker on his truck, his mother said.
?I understand these are the times, as a parent, I?m grateful,? Justine said. ?But you have a police officer say there is no threat. And then I call the district and explain those are my firearms; those are all mine; we were shooting; there is no threat, and I have video of all of us shooting to back all this up.?
Reams said if this would have occurred with the Red Flag law in place, and if Loveland police would have believed that Nathan might be a threat, they could have not only confiscated any guns in his possession, but any guns in the homes of both parents where they might believe he has access, taking away others? Second Amendment rights in the process.
?He exercised his First Amendment right to use his Second Amendment right,? Reams said. ?I hope this doesn?t make him fear that in the future.?

It's a little frustrating it happens, but some snowflake got their feels hurt and cried wolf so LE is going to investigate. Many have chastised LE for not investigating threats. However, if LE determine there is no threat, that should be the end of it.
Being hassled for a Pro 2A position is just not acceptable.
Fooking school administrators.

It's not about safety, it is all political in this case. There was clearly no threat, yet they're making him out to be one anyways... bullying him out of school for posting pictures of his day on the range with his mother and bullying him over his NRA sticker in the past are indications that it is purley political. I'd bet dollars to donuts that the spy/snitch who reported him as a threat is some gun control nutjob administrator with an axe to grind against him for having an NRA sticker on his vehicle or something like that, to cause trouble for him and his family for having a different view.
Some of you guys out there have got to stop believing in the notion that this has anything to do with public safety...it doesn't...

Thats the problem with anonymous reporting with anything, no accountability if someone bends the truth or flat out lies, just ask citizens of the former GDR how anonymous reporting worked for them

But can I take this opportunity to say how much I hate the use of "finna"? It's right up there with "tryna".

Oh the irony.
A large part of the underlying motivation is to make you and your children to stop espousing their views. If kids are scared to say "I went shooting last weekend", then their opinion will never provoke the thought of their fellow students, and it can be successfully demonized in the remaining student body - they won't know that all these "normal" kids like guns, too. It's not a broad conspiracy, but broadly perpetrated by administrators of a similar "progressive" mindset. News stories published far and wide amplify the effect. Same to in social media. If you can create an undisturbed progressive/socialist bubble around students, then you will guarantee future progressive/socialists that cannot be disturbed by alternate worldviews.
So yeah, it's working.
Also can anyone even tell the difference between glocks in a doodle?
BTW: Part of the reason "red flags" are civil is so they don't trigger the sixth amendment "right to confront accuser" clause, despite the remedy being pretty clearly criminal in nature. They also don't want to deal with higher evidentiary thresholds to you know, remove such lowly things as constitutional rights from citizens.
But, on the other hand, felons in the can should be able to vote, cause it's a constitutional right, even if they did murder twelve people in a truck.

When voted on they will no longer be Felons. Which in liberal mindset removes the stigma attached to oh say being a rapist, or murderer.
While i'm sure their intentions were good, in their minds. What they don't realize is. Once reclassified as other than felon. They can now vote (surprise) BUT also GASP Legally Buy a gun.

The kid posted a vague video showing his guns with the words "finna be lit" on Tuesday. No indication he was just going to the range. I don't know about you guys, but I have no idea what that means.
The police paid him a visit Tuesday evening and discovered he just went to the range.
The school asked him to stay home until they got the clear from Police on Wednesday. The parents met with the school for 5 mins, explained things and he was given his missed homework, the school apologized for the confusion and he was back in class.
This is much to do about nothing. Kid posted a vague video, school and police checked it out, cleared him quickly and he missed barely a day of school.

Since elections (even federal elections) are handled at the county and state level, how is it a "constitutional right"? You talking about the state constitution? The US Constitution leaves the defining of voting eligibility to the states.

He was home schooled and entered an apprenticeship as a land surveyor at an early age. He would most likely have been sent to school in England or entered into the Royal Navy at an early age had it not been for the early deaths of his father and elder brothers.

This is what I was saying earlier. This article saying he was cleared was published on Thursday. He went shooting Tuesday. Yet here we are still freaking out about it on Friday thinking he was actually suspended. He missed a single day of school while everyone checked it out to make sure there wasn't any funny business. Like someone else here said, if he just posted "going to the range with my mom" I bet none of this would have happened.
It's seriously a non-story blown WAY out of proportion.

I don't know how I would feel, what I do know, is my kids aren't going to be saying things like "Finna be lit" in my presence, or on social media. I shouldn't have to use the urban dictionary to translate what they are trying to say. I'm willing to bet the student could have avoided much of this drama, had he just spoken like a normal person.

I guess the family and family friends I have on social media, are not normal, because I've never heard anything like that come from them, and I've never heard the term until reading this thread, is it possible that there are also others out there like me, that have never heard the term, and don't know what to make of it?

For clarification my sons, 18 and 21, use phrases like this all the time when talking to their peers and on social media. However they also know when not to use such terms, for example at work, in the classroom, when talking to someone who deserves respect etc. They are also both attending college on full academic scholarships and grants.

One day to sort it out like in this case? Yes, I'd feel the same way. No biggie. There are MUCH, MUCH larger problems in public schools than some kid missing a single day of class to make sure he's not going to be a problem. This situation measures as insignificant IMO.
An actual suspension, then no, I'd be upset.

I agree with hollohas and I can tell you this happened to me and probably for less. Within days of the Columbine shooting I was yanked into the administrators office, which had "extra security" for their protection. I always kept my head shaved (three cowlicks). I loved military history and everyone knew I was going to join the Army. I was a cadet as well and people were aware we had guns in our home. I never made any comments about shooting (as it wasn't common for my family to go shooting when I was young) and I wasn't overly interested in guns as a kid, but we kept guns loaded and practiced good firearms awareness. But someone put all those things together and decided I was the next shooter. I was also off the next day until my parents could be contacted by school administrators, mainly due to me answering honestly that guns in the house were loaded. When my dad was contacted his exact words were, "If they aren't loaded then they don't shoot." We couldn't grasp what was happening and I was never in any trouble and was the type of kid to answer questions very honestly when asked.
In my defense a couple of my teachers found out about this and although extremely liberal, made it a point to make their feelings known to their boss about how I was treated, which I didn't really care. My thought as a kid was, I guess they have to investigate something that someone said and see if it's true or not. My point is that in neither case the kid missed an excessive amount of school, they weren't arrested, or did they have their rights violated. Someone made a statement that wasted everyone's time. It's okay to investigate allegations and determine there is nothing wrong.

Seems to me that doesn't imply he doesn't try.
Seems more likely to me that this kid often doesn't chose his words carefully.
Maybe he doesn't try, but that's judgmental assumption on your part.
Believe it or not, I'm not standing in judgement of him at all. I am judging how the narrative has been spun in order to elicit the desired reaction from the article. The article is mostly filler, which people are now discussing as if any of it matters. The words he used, if he was missing *gasp* one day! of school, how excited he was to see his mom. All of it is true, yet none of it matters.

Agree completely. This was an everyday situation that was handled and it's over but someone on the other side was trying to make a narrative and we are filling the day with it being pissed about it.
To me, it means that he knows he's not the best student in the class, and doesn't want to be put at any more disadvantage by missing classes and assignments. I had kind of the opposite issue, in that most classes(except Algebra II/Trig) came very easily to me, and I got bored quickly, and started causing trouble. By the time my senior year rolled around, most of my teachers let me choose when to be there, as long as my assignments got completed and my test scores held up.
It has nothing to do with his academics, and everything to do with a tabloid reporter asking just the right questions to get quotes that will engage readers.

I wish I had your teachers. That's not to say that I still decided when to be there, but they weren't to happy about it. I completed everything that had value.... things like coloring maps in senior year didn't get completed. I've never been good at completing pointless "busy" work, but then again I can knock out about 300% of the tasks other people do... it would be nice if they taught students to be efficient.

There are TONS of things I did as a kid that I don't want my children to repeat, I also wasn't allowed to do a lot of things that my friends were allowed to do, my parent's were somewhat of "squares" if you will, I grew up in a strict Christian home. I'm under no illusion that my kids won't do things I don't want them too, it doesn't mean I will condone it. We were all raised differently, and we will all have different expectations of our children, so you raise yours how you want and I'll raise mine how I want, or do you have any?

They have souls. Lots of souls. Just not their own. You can tell how many they have by the number of freckles. They get a new one for every soul they steal.
That's some funny stuff there Rucker.

The cause of death is under investigation, and no other details were released.
...but let's drop in some extraneous information that may be wholly unrelated. Also gotta' make sure it seems like the climate is more extreme than ever.
A woman died in Death Valley National Park this week as temperatures soared to nearly 120 degrees.
Weak example. They put zero spin on that (the part you quoted anyway). Everyone knows it gets hot in Death Valley.
I know what you're trying to say, but that's a bad example.

In your opinion.
We know this is normal, but that context is found nowhere in the article. Examined individually, people may not notice. We don't even know if the woman's death is related to the temperature, yet here it is. For the uninformed voter that gets their information from social media and only reading headlines, the climate is so bad, it's killing people.
They produce these things in volume to tilt perception. 'Repetition is the mother of learning.'
