I was hoping the next civil war would wait until I was free from this mortal coil...

That's looking a lot less likely in the last few months...

Like Lobo says....another step in getting screwed as law abiding, gun owning community.

This article was on Truth About Guns, there is more to it, it is DOJ trying to find out who is illegally exporting the ATN thermal and night-vision scopes (ITAR violators) outside of the US, they want the records of the app users name and IP address to see where they are at in the world, so they can trace back to see how they got the scope outside the US.

Um, no. Please fight this apple and Google. The guberment gas no right to this information freely. Make them go to court and gave a judge rule on their lack of authority.

Tracking guns didn't work for Fast and Furious...and those assholes had all of the info. Where's the "national scope registry"? If there's no continuous chain of custody for those scopes, their excuse stinks to high heaven.

Both are American companies that have rights. Our corrupt government must follow the constitution to get info from American companies. No American company should freely give up or comply with warrantless requests. Make the guberment follow proper legal channels to get what it wants.

Blocking non citizens from entering this country is completely different, which is what the quote you posted was about.

ATN
5 hrs ?
American Technologies Network Corp. (“ATN”) today learned of the possible existence of a federal order issued to Apple and Google to provide usernames regarding one of our products, the ATN Obsidian 4. ATN was unaware of these allegations until the publication of a Forbes magazine article entitled, “Exclusive: Feds Order Apple And Google To Hand Over Names Of 10,000+ Users Of A Gun Scope App”.

ATN has not been contacted by the Department of Justice, Apple, or Google. ATN will protect its customers and their identifying data to the absolute extent possible under U.S. law. And, it will not provide any information regarding the identity of our customers to any third party unless specifically required by law.

The Forbes article makes it clear ATN is not under investigation. It also states they want the data in an attempt to track those that might be exporting this scope illegally.

I'm glad I don't have the app on my phone or computer.

One of the biggest problems of actions like this isn't even the action, e.g. even lets say if they honorably only sought international IP addresses etc..

The big problem is it results in a growing fear of expression or enjoyment of ones hobby - or whatever it might be - for a myriad of reasons in a thousand cuts. And this goes beyond firearms. Our society is rapidly shifting to one where people are reluctant to express or be anything that isn't part of the conformist ideology, and really; rarely is someone ever entirely part of "the" ideology. But, people don't want to appear to diverge from it - not out of per-se fear, but mostly, just to avoid confrontation or harassment. Issue here is, now many people will be far less inclined to use any shooting related applications, with broad repercussions - just from the mere mention of this.

The conforming ideology isn't even a majority thought process. But a plethora of these tiny cuts would seemingly, eventually result in a bizarre, apparently like-minded and dangerous society in a generation or so. I think it's amusing all the firearm owners that think they'll squirrel everything away and it'll be preserved for future generations. Your kids, or grandkids, whom will have little to no "real" interaction with firearms and live in a demonizing society, will fare more likely do their duty as a responsible citizen and turn them all in after you pass away, rather than continue storing something that they fear and have no experience with - because you, or your immediate descendant was motivated, by a thousand cuts, not to use them recreationally - or at least not as often, and thus, your descendants will only have a fraction of a fraction of exposure to this life, the reasoning, and the perspective - amplified even more with your grandchildren.

The article said ATN is not under investigation and I don't agree with DOJ tactic there is probably another way for them to find out how they are getting outside the US. A blanket lets look at "everyone" is not the way to do it in regards to privacy.

I have this gut feeling Apple and google would be willing give up the info since you know, guns or in this case gun accessories.

These companies need to quit caring about the “law”.

As if being “legal” makes something right anymore than being “illegal” makes it wrong.

You all know the old saying: If everyone is thinking the same way, someone isn't thinking.
