That you need a weight slip when registering a light truck in CO.

I got a new-to-me 2018 F-150 last month, bought it out of state (UT.) I thought I had all the paperwork I needed to register so I waited in line at the DMV today, only to be told that I need a verified weight slip.

I've owned trucks in Colorado before but they were all "compact" trucks (Toyota, Ford Ranger, Mazda B2000) so I guess they were too small to need a certified weight.

I presume road taxes are based on weight?
Which would have been nice to know BEFORE I had ~250lbs of camper shell bolted to the bed (which was yesterday.) [Rant1]

I know back in "the day" you could register a pickup as a "recreational truck" and not have to pay the commercial truck tax. I think you had to sign a statement that the truck would only be used for non-commercial purposes (which mine will be - it's a camper tug.) Anyone know if they still do that? I remember the "Recreational truck" license plates had a unique color scheme, yellow lettering on a green background instead of the usual white-on-green.

Were you dealing with somebody new?

Admittedly I?ve only brought one truck in from out of state but needing a weight slip for a non commercial vehicle seems silly.

Also, every truck I have owned in Colorado has been registered for recreational use. Saves a few bucks a year on registration.

Is this because "Truck" plates were requested instead of regular passenger plates?

We welcome your new truck Komrad.

That sounds really odd for an F-150. ID requires a different type of plate for some pickups depending on GCWR. I have an F-250 and because of the GCWR I have to have truck plates if I plan to tow anything, which I do. Technically you're supposed to stop at the scales if you're towing here...no one ever does though.

I haven't needed this for any of the F 150s I've owned and I registered mine 2 weeks ago. Maybe it's new. Wouldn't surprise me....just another way to squeeze a few more dollars outta ya.

Apparently this has to do with the out-of-state title not having a weight on it. She looked and looked and said usually the title has a weight listed, but this one didn't.

Just a guess, but wouldn't the out of state VIN verification you should probably have had done by your local PD record the weights from the door sticker?

It all seems really odd to me for a non-commercial vehicle.

ETA: I just looked at my Dodge 2500 truck title and it only lists a 2 digit code (71) for "CWT/CAP/SIZE" but this is a title from 2004.

And today you learned there's 1 more reason, to revisit moving out of state.

On a positive note, if you do indeed need a weigh slip it isn?t a huge deal or very expensive.

I used to have to get my 3/4 ton truck (company vehicle) weighed every year. Just about any truck stop worth it?s salt makes it super easy to get it weighed. Pull on the scales right and you can even get the front/rear axle weights. My trucks were pretty evenly balanced with about 4,500 or so on both axles.

I drove a used F150 back from Michigan in March and same deal, and I didn't get truck plates. I had to go to a scale and get a weight slip. It was worth it though, I got way more truck for my money than buying here in CO.

CAT Scales has an App. You can do most of it (esp if you need re-weighs) from your phone. Go inside to pickup the hardcopy.

Thanks. I?ve since scaled down to a half ton. We don?t weigh those.

Yep, that's why I went to UT.
