I want to get a suppressor for my sons hunting rifle. He is a minor and will always be with me while using it. I am trying to save his ears, so he can hear when he is my age. I was thinking a TBAC Ultra 5 or 7. We have found that hearing protection while hunting can be difficult to use and we struggle to get anything to fit him properly. The suppressor will be going on a .308.
What would everyone suggest for a suppressor? Is one of these TBAC's the way to go? Anything else I should look at?
Recommended suppressor dealers?
Any thoughts on youth hearing protection that can be used effectively in hunting situations?
Thanks!
I would think even the foamies that are on a stiff holder that hangs around your neck would be easy to quickly put in, stay out of the way, and certainly be better than nothing.
How about something like this for hearing protection?

Just leave them in all the time, since they amplify the ambient noise.

I ended up with the TBAC ultra 9 for my .308 hunting rifle. I know a lot of folks on the forums prefer the 7 or 5 because of length and weight, and it's a valid concern. A suppressed .308 is still LOUD of course, but it's better than nothing.
Having ear-pro with you while hunting is a great theory, but it's almost never worked out for me in practice. I've rarely experienced the hunting show style hunt where you have time to look at the camera, state some facts, and put on your ear protection before lining up a shot. YMMV. My normal elk shot is usually me reaching the top of a ridge, completely out of breath, having walked up on a small herd that is now looking in my direction trying to figure out what's going on with that wheezing bi-ped; deciding to break and flee immediately, or in 5 seconds.

Amplified is nice, but you can't really tell direction through those, which is probably pretty important when hunting.
This is what I was thinking of, since you can hang them around your neck and if you have time (or even remember) pop them in before the shot. Probably especially nice if you have your kid as the observer, so they'll have plenty of time without their hands full to pop them in.

I think you're on the right track as a responsible parent looking out for you son's hearing. When I started shooting competitively as a junior we used wads of cotton. A couple years later I bought ear muffs. But hearing damage happens when you take quick shots at game when there isn't time to use ear protection.
I'm not familiar with the TBAC products but I'd say, buy the best you can afford because a suppressor is likely to be a permanent acquisition. I'm happy with the SilencerCo Omega 300, advertised as the lightest, shortest, quietest, magnum and full-auto rated suppressor on the market. The shot report from my 7mm-08 on a pronghorn Saturday morning was like a pop in the wind. What a joy!

DeadAir is supposed to be releasing a slightly longer and quieter version of the Nomad later this year
They posted preliminary db numbers and some comparisons part way down on page 1

Just some general information to add:
Bear in mind, that while I like both of my TBAC suppressors, Thunder Beast took over 3 months to ship my suppressors. I specifically asked before I ordered and was told 3 to 5 weeks max. They are good suppressors but I didn't appreciate that. I might order from them again some day, but my last 4 suppressors were from other manufacturers.
Single Shot Silencer Shop trusts are currently still taking 9+ months to clear, measured from the time your check is cashed to when the form is marked approved. Silencer Shop one-owner submissions, submitted through the Kiosk, are coming back at 70 to 90 days currently. That's a HUGE difference.
Maybe not hard. . .
So much awesome.

Great information guys. I really appreciate it.
TBAC is the best for precision rifle cans. I have an Ultra 5 and a 9. For a hunting rifle, I’d definitely choose the 5”. It’s does a surprisingly good job. As a plus, now you have a can you can run on all your other rifles. I shot my Ultra 5” on my 11” barreled SBR over the weekend. I’d want earpro for practice and prolonged strings of fire, but for a shot or three without, its fine.

It’s nice to hear from someone with a 5” TBAC. I went to the other extreme with the 9”, and it does make the rifle a little long when hiking.
I have a Thunderbeast Ultra 5 on my 300 H&H big game rifle. One or two shots without ear pro isnt the end of the world. It isnt Ultra 9 quiet thats for sure, but it is right at home on a 24 inch hunting rifle. It isnt long, but it is lightweight so it doesent throw off the balance of the rifle.

Whelp, just read reports that there's a few paper form 4 submissions, single owner and didn't use Silencer Shop Kiosk, that have come back around the 90 day mark too. Good to know it's not solely SS Kiosk related.

I've heard good things about the AAC Jaeger.
The best part is the price...MSRP of $449.99. Almost a 1/3 the price of TBAC.
I'm not knocking TBAC...there's a lot of R&D in their stuff and it's certainly worth the price. It's absolutely is THE best can for precision shooters.
But for a rifle that you're only going to shoot maybe 2 times a year, a cheaper suppressor might be the ticket.

Yes, I had 2 customer's cans come back just under 90 days. Totally random as I've got other customers that submitted at the same time still waiting. None were trusts...
