View Full Version : Smile.Amazon.com charity donations
So, a few years ago, I set up smile.amazon.com to support The 2nd Amendment Foundation.
Today, I received the quarterly update that shows how much money Amazon orders have generated for this charity:

Pretty interesting.
We buy everything through Smile.Amazon.Com. I take a small amount of pleasure in Bezos sending money to groups that he doesn't agree with.
This is the first I’ve heard of smile. I’ll have to look in to it as I tend to make a lot of purchases on amazon in the winter to take advantage of how their guaranteed arrival dates often conflict with adverse weather conditions in the mountains.
Thought question: If bezos manages to get people to pay him who otherwise would've disagreed with him, increasing his profit by an arbitrary number, and in exchange, he donates 1/100th of that increase to groups he doesn't like, and then can donate 1/2 of that increase to groups he does like (let's say, Million Moms or Brady), then are you really helping your own cause?

If buying on Amazon saves a considerable amount of money in your budget, why not give a small percentage of their profits while you can?

I don't remember how long we've been donating to Smile. But it goes to our local animal shelter. I send money directly to gun groups. Still a pretty good deal and that's a good amount to the SAF.
I decided a long time ago that's it's almost impossible not to buy products from a company I don't see eye to eye with. I try to avoid it when practical or obvious...but I don't constantly fret over it. I'd never get anything done.
As much as I hate liberals from CA (and other states) moving into an area and turning it into what they just fled, I sold my house in Bailey to a couple from CA. They had cash. Turns out it spends just like money from any other source.
I’ve used smile to support the Mike Rowe WORKS Foundation for a couple years at least.
We've done this for years now although my charity of choice is slightly different: National Mill Dog Rescue. It's a volunteer-based dog rescue that specializes in rescuing dogs from puppy mills and spreading the word of how evil they are since most people are clueless. For my wife and I, this cause is something we both value highly and wish more people knew not to buy dogs. Rescuing a dog versus buying is such a minor decision but has a huge impact as each adoption has a double impact.

They're local (Peyton, CO) and do a LOT of good for dogs who had the dumb luck of being born to greedy people. I'm aware of their financial situation too and I can assure you that they maximize every dollar received out of necessity. I know that whatever donations they receive will be utilized 100% and nothing wasted on fat like some other charities that have massive administrative overhead.
