How do shipping companies ever make money? Here's the tracking info for an order I placed last week. It's a very large item...impossible to miss among other boxes:
https://i.imgur.com/1Vi4yRg.jpg
I always love when you see a package get redirected somewhere like NYC and then it shows "out for delivery".
Usually it means you'll eventually get it about 6-8 weeks later. When that NYC truck eventually completes its nation-wide route, apparently.
My favorite was a critical overnight package, their plane broke down at the destination terminal (Fedex IIRC)... they kept all cargo on it locked away until they finished repairing it many days later. It was like....tf? It is there. Don't you know it's possible to unload it either while they are repairing it... or even better, before? It was important enough I was willing to drive to the airport to pick it up... nope, policy.
I don't think I've ever got a refund for any of the 5-10% of overnights that missed either. USPS is the worst for issuing refunds in that regards imho, they have perfected a run-around system. "We're sorry, you cannot request a refund online for this label. You need to request a refund at your local post office" Go to your local post office "Oh, this label was printed online, you can only obtain a refund online". Not once, have I ever seen a refund for the probably 8-10 times USPS has jacked that up - and yes, I used to do a loooot of overnights.
PS: Life hack - if you have critical time sensitive documents that don't need the original-in-ink signature (e.g. copy is fine), use a courier instead of overnight. It's often cheaper, and more reliable.
...
USPS tracking is still the best.
I've had packages that showed Ohio to Kansas to Denver to Salt Lake City then back to Denver and out for delivery. Why they made a stop in Denver and then took it to Salt Lake City and then brought it back to Denver for delivery is a mystery to me.

I had a UPS guy admit to me that a lot of the time the tracking is what they call "virtual tracking." It's where the package should be not where it actually is.
USPS =
We got the tracking number for the shit you bought
We don't have a clue WTF your shit is or when it will get there
We delivered your shit
Amazon Logistics is running a close second. They lose so much stuff it's unbelievable.
In that same vein, why does amazon put small items in such big boxes? I got literally 2 coin cell batteries in a 12”x8”x6” box! They would have fit in a small envelope.
We should be able to return Amazon boxes directly to the distribution facility so that they can be reused.

Because they're 3rd part vendors who don't care how big or small the box is. As long as it's out their door by X time frame, they're gtg.
Amazon probably have a special rate to ship item if not shipped by in house.
Amazon FBA sometimes (but often not) is more affordable for them to fulfill some items than sending it on your own on ebay.

I have seen the same.
I think the existence of lithium replacement batteries mandates a minimum box size.

Tangentially related: I order a couple of hot sauces in table sized bottles a few times a year from a company & they ship them in an 20x20" box every single time.
It's rather silly to dig through this huge box full of 'expandos' to find two cholula/tabasco sized bottles on the bottom.
Oddly they always seem to ship & track without issue.

speaking of tracking #'s the post office tracking program is even worse. Having a few items lost w/ trk #'s when asked why they are unable to find it? Yeah Umm that's a courtesy to you. Like you we have no way of actually tracking it. Only to know where in the system / what post office, or distribution facility it "might" be in.
They knew a package was supposedly in phoenix, but not sure due to them not having an actual place in the facility where it would be placed.
Throw in while it shows it's at phoenix, There's no guarantee it's actually there because the previous scan said ....That's where it's headed, not physically in route. [facepalm]
I told them, you know. I've had more believable answers from a 3rd world customer service rep for cable then what you just told me.

I think its a case of how many packages actually get to the destination on time and correctly. I bet only a small portion gets lost, sent the wrong way, etc. Every industry makes mistakes. Just like USPS...they get plenty of things to your mailbox, but its the one time they lose something that you notice.

^^ No, I get that. But FedEx screws things up so often I now ask vendors not to use them and will occasionally order what I want thru another company if they tell me they ship with FedEx.
I have an occasional problem with UPS.
USPS almost never causes me grief. I always use the post office when I can. Simply because they're better. And I hate FedEx.
ETA: the on-again off-again contract driver showed up today with the package. He got stuck last night at the house on the hill above me. He said it was "too late" (8:12 pm) so he marked it delivered (he was so close to my house as he drove by his GPS-enabled handheld allowed him to). He said he went right home (50 miles away) knowing he could come back today for the delivery (another 100 mile round trip). Yeah...makes sense to me.
I got a taste of the FedEx confusion today. Got a tag on door, package was estimated to be here Wednesday, tracking said it "business not open" yesterday. No tag, no video. Went to the local regular FedEx today, that I have gone to a dozen times. With tracking door tag in hand the counter guy was confused. Lots of typing and checking in the back. No luck. Finally figures it was sent "ground" and I need to find the "ground" location.
Funny thing is, he knows not where it is. Ends up searching it in his personal phone. Says iit might be on Arapahoe Road. Web tracking doesn't show where it is or where to go either. Guess I'm just gonna wait and see it it gets redelivered, or gets sent back. Maybe sender will have to figure it out. They seem to suck.
End of rant. Thanks.

Amazing how FedEx driver knew I was not available yet there were no tracks from his truck on my 1/4+ mile driveway.

I ordered a new TV, first one since 2004, from the Exchange website on 10/13/2019.
It was in a warehouse in CA. It arrived in Spokane, WA on 10/23/2019. It was still sitting in Spokane on 10/29. Shipper finally calls me to set up a delivery appt on 10/31. First available appt is on 11/21.
I called the exchange and got the run around. I called the shipper back and got more runaround. I called the exchange and told them to keep their TV.
I ordered the same TV from Amazon on Wed...got it delivered Fri. Same price but I had to pay tax.
5 freakin' weeks to get a TV from CA to ID. The lower tier freight companies are just as bad as the big players.
I hate all of 'em. Especially the ones that deliver to your home address even though you specified a totally different address.

Credit to UPS today. The terminal manager actually called me to tell me a driver notified her of a package (mine) mistakenly put on his truck. She called to tell me it was put on the wrong truck and would be put on the correct truck for delivery tomorrow. That I can live with. A mistake that's recognized, I'm told about, and corrected without a lot of run around. Why is that so hard for some?
I got home and was saddened that my mailbox wasn?t overflowing with junk mail as usual.
Then I realized that since today is Veterans Day they probably didn?t deliver my junk mail today.
Tomorrow should bring a double dose of the usual junk mail. Score!
I like when they take a photograph of the item they just delivered to a porch that isn't yours. If I thought it would help, I would take a photograph of my porch and send it back to them and let them compare their photograph to my photograph and have them explain the discrepancy.
My current neighborhood FB group routinely has messages asking if anyone received an item delivered by mistake. We frequently complete the delivery cycle for all of the various carriers. It gives us another way of meeting and getting to know everyone in the neighborhood.

Something like this happens when we get a USPS letter carrier other than our regular guy. Everyone's stuff ends up spread out in the mailboxes and we hand deliver to our neighbors.

I had to deliver mail to two different houses tonight.
We frequently get mail for these people at one certain house that are several blocks away, always the same house. Address ain't nothing like ours, or their name!
Makes us wonder if OUR mail ever goes to the wrong place, and they just trash it. I always take other folks mail to them, never had anyone bring US any. Did find some of our mail laying on the sidewalk a block away once though.
If I don't know them or the address isn't immediately around ours, I write Delivered to Incorrect Address on the envelope and drop it in the outgoing mail.
We've had a parade of mail trolls at the shop. The current one is much better than the last couple, as she can count to 14 (the number of units in the building), and mostly delivers accordingly. Previously, I've gotten to know pretty much everyone in the building, as well as next door, and across the street, during the daily mail exchange.

UPS employees allegedly ran massive drug shipment operation, evading authorities for a decade (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/ups-employees-allegedly-ran-massive-drug-shipment-operation-evading-authorities-for-a-decade/ar-BBXr3pv)
TUCSON —A group of United Parcel Service employees allegedly helped to import and traffic massive amounts of drugs and counterfeit vaping oils from Mexico during the past decade, part of a scheme that exploited a vulnerability in the company’s distribution system, according to police.
The lucrative operation at times involved moving thousands of pounds of marijuana and narcotics each week from narco-traffickers into the United States to destinations across the country, using standard cardboard boxes that were carefully routed through the private mail carrier’s trucking and delivery systems, authorities said. The cash the operation generated was used to buy opulent homes, vacations, properties and luxury vehicles, detectives said.
Four UPS employees have been charged with drug trafficking in state court, and court records show that at least 11 people — including two UPS supervisors and drivers — have been arrested in the past two weeks on a slew of state charges stemming from the decade-long investigation by a task force of local, state and federal law enforcement.
Investigators from the Counter Narcotics Alliance said accused ringleader Mario Barcelo — a 20-year UPS employee and dispatch supervisor — used a simple method to obscure the origin and destination of drug shipments, a tactic they worry could be replicated by other UPS employees and other drug-trafficking organizations.
Authorities said Barcelo, 49, used his position as a supervisor in the Tucson distribution facility to ensure known drug shipments were loaded onto the correct trucks and were delivered on time to their destinations without any interference or drug interdiction, bypassing security measures the employees knew well.
Attempts to reach Barcelo were unsuccessful and it is unclear if Barcelo has a lawyer, as none was listed on publicly available court records in the case.
Tucson-area law enforcement had been tracking Barcelo since at least 2009, but Tucson Police Sgt. William Kaderly said detectives were frustrated for years that the company did not work more “proactively” with them to intercept and prevent the suspected criminal behavior. Barcelo was arrested on Nov. 13.
“He’s been able to provide this service to drug traffickers without being detected both internally and externally by law enforcement for years,” Kaderly said. “They’ve been doing it for so long that they were truly comfortable that they were never going to get caught.”
UPS said in a statement that it is cooperating with law enforcement officials but that the company is “not at liberty to discuss the details of the arrests as this is an ongoing investigation.”
The Arizona Attorney General’s office, which is prosecuting the case, declined to comment. Some of the defendants were arraigned this week, but prosecutors have withheld specific details of the investigation from public court record as more arrests are expected soon. Some of the indictments have been sealed, police said.
Barcelo and his alleged associates expanded the operation over time, transitioning from delivering marijuana to dealing in more valuable drugs and vaping pens. Similar black market vaping pens and oil have been linked to the deadly outbreak of a lung illness that has sickened nearly 2,300 people and killed 47 nationwide.
The drug ring, which allegedly learned how to bypass all security systems, was shipping several thousand pounds of drugs a week at the peak of its operation, increasing profits the farther east the packages were delivered, Kaderly said.
“Their sales pitch was that because of who Barcelo was at UPS, he could make sure your package will make it out without anyone finding it,” he said. “He had face time with traffickers.”
In one instance in 2017, investigators said they learned of a shipment but were prevented from entering a UPS distribution facility in Tuscon to investigate and intercept it. UPS spokesman Matthew O’Connor declined to provide details about the case, referring questions back to “law enforcement personnel.”
The company also declined to answer questions about the suspected “vulnerability,” as police described it, in its internal delivery system that the alleged conspirators used to carry out their enterprise.
Charging documents obtained by The Washington Post show progress in the case did not come until 2017, when detectives identified some of the UPS drivers who were allegedly involved in the scheme and got investigators inside UPS’s fraud and security divisions to help.
Undercover officers posing as drug traffickers contacted Barcelo’s associates to ship parcels containing sham cocaine and cash during several months in 2018 and 2019. Investigators also placed GPS trackers inside the boxes, documenting the packages’ movement from the homes of the individuals charged in the conspiracy to the UPS hub and out for delivery.
Police also tapped the phones of UPS employees and collected video footage of the group as they coordinated using the WhatsApp messaging app for the loading, handling, shipping and retrieval of cash and boxes from undercover agents, authorities said.
Along with Barcelo, UPS supervisor Gary Love, 40, and drivers Michael Castro, 34, and Thomas Mendoza, 47, face money laundering, drug possession and drug distribution charges. Seven others are facing charges related to the shipping of the drugs and operating stash houses for the illicit materials.
One defendant, a 26-year-old, is suspected of being a member of a larger drug-trafficking organization in Mexico; he and an associate charged undercover agents $2,000 to accept a fake drug shipment and deliver it into the United States.
Surveillance of Barcelo, including wiretapping and undercover work, led police to Raul Garcia Cordova, 47, who was arrested Nov. 21 on more than a dozen charges. Police raided his mansion and seized a boat, a Chevrolet Corvette and a Range Rover. Investigators found 50,000 counterfeit vaping pens in a storage locker, officials said.
Local television stations captured footage of the SWAT operations at Garcia Cordova’s home last week as police hauled away the vehicles along with ledgers, cash and marijuana found hidden under a Jacuzzi. Police allege that the man financed the operation.
“It was purely greed-driven,” Kaderly said. The UPS employees “make nearly six-figures with benefits, but at some point, greed just took over.”
“It was purely greed-driven,” Kaderly said. The UPS employees “make nearly six-figures with benefits, but at some point, greed just took over.”
With keen insight like this, it's no wonder Kaderly rose up from detective to Sgt. Ha!

Buyer was understanding.
First, I get that the tracking is probably inaccurate but I still find it funny.
Ordered something from a place in Fort Collins five days ago.
It looks like it took it three days to get from Fort Collins to Seattle, WA.
It is currently in transit but no idea where it is heading next.
I figure another three days to get back here, probably go to the local hub and sit for a couple of days, and likely my package that shipped from Fort Collins will complete the 45 mile trip to my house in about twelve days.

FedEx has a small package for me. It's from Virginia and was originally scheduled for delivery on the 15th (Wed/tomorrow).
Yesterday morning the tracking showed it ahead of schedule and on the FedEx vehicle for delivery. At about 8:30 it showed the package back at the terminal because it's "not due for delivery". It's still just sitting at the terminal. Meanwhile, I'll watch the FedEx driver go right by my house later this morning just like I did yesterday.
This is why I despise FedEx. They have an opportunity to do something positive and build some good will and good customer relations and they don't do it. I could see holding it if, for example, they only came to my town two or three days a week. But they come here every day. So instead of delivering the item early they're just gonna sit on it because it's not due for another day. Fuckers.
Yeah...I hate FedEx.

I have a similar relationship with UPS. On the day of expected delivery, I'll track the vehicle the package is on and watch it driving through my neighborhood for an hour or more - even looking out my window and seeing the truck drive by my home twice, only to (A) have the driver finally show a couple of hours later, or (B) not have my package delivered that day and seeing the truck is back at it's facility come evening.
I think UPS offers the tracking tool where you can track the trucks location simply to cause great frustration to the recipient, nothing more. "So, your package is close. Aaaaannd, psyche!"
Had UPS take an ammo order back in January from MS to KY, then to UT, back to KY and MS saying that I had refused to sign for it. Fortunately, the company filed something with them showing their own tracking showed it never even got to this state and it was reshipped free and I got it two days later.

That seems to happen often out here. If the driver is behind in their day, the head honcho at the local office tells them to pull over and scan all packages as delivered by 8pm. Then the stuff shows up the next day.

Shipping, ALL methods, is the worst I have ever seen. I deal with freight, all sizes, coming from all over the world, with all carriers, all day and I have never been more frustrated.
A couple weeks ago I had 5 packages ship via UPS 2-Day Air, all from the same place in NV loaded on the same truck at pickup, all with the same ship-to address. All tracking numbers are linked as a 5 piece shipment.
1 package arrived on time.
4 got "delayed".
3 eventually showed up today.
1 got returned to sender because UPS says the address is no good. (But somehow delivered 4 other pieces to the no-good address).
UPS won't refund the 2-day charges. They say they don't guarantee even premium services right now, cause Covid and holidays blah blah blah.
I have had multiple, 600lb, $8,000 pieces of equipment simply disappear over the last couple months too. XPO/Conway and others lost them. Vanished. Even after making it all the way to the Henderson distribution center from SC. Freight docks are like the bermuda triangle apparently. And freight claims rarely get paid even when they admit to losing stuff.
It's going to give me a stroke.
I think three orders I placed on Black Friday should be arriving today. What?s that? Like fifteen days or so?
I would say with Covid, a surge of packages from Black Friday, and the usual holiday shipping there?s a backlog of boxes like you wouldn?t believe and the wonderful people at FedEx, UPS, and the post office are doing all they can right now.

So I went to ship a light box (12x12x18 inches 10 lbs) to ft Leonard Wood area last week. USPS said $82 and it would take 2 weeks. I left without shipping, as I could drive there and back in 36 hours.
Went to UPS with the same package, shipped standard for $21. It arrived 40 hrs later.
WTF. Is the USPS trying to go out of business or are they just that incompetent/inefficient?

Severely unionized, aka incompetent and inefficient.
I'll never understand how they lose money with a .gov mandated monopoly.

XPO is the worst shipper I have seen. We rarely hire shippers, the clients do that to arrange shipping to and from. XPO has "lost" 3 shipments in the last few months. These aren't little things. 10 foot long pallet of steel things is one they lost. How do you lose that? I have heard this from many XPO users also. Is there an XPO shipping yard full of stuff that they don't know what to do with? Starting to think XPO "loses" things, then sells them off to balance the monthly books after underbidding shipment costs on a regular basis.

Shipment tracking makes me laugh. The shipping companies highlight it as a benefit to the client, but what it really does is show how stupid/inept the shipping system is. Sure takes the heat off the shipper when the person receiving can look up a late package and see that I sent it when agreed and the box is bouncing around the USPS system for days and days making no progress. So much nicer than back when I was shipping lots of boxes and had to devote a portion of each day calling local post offices trying to track down lost packages that some lazy employee didnt want to mess with and stuck on a shelf and ignored.

The other issue we're running into is the signature proof of deliveries nearly all say "C19" "Covid" or something similar. Companies like FedEx don't want to hand their digital signature pads to a hundred people a day so they get a verbal name and sign it "Covid". Seriously.
Had a guy a few weeks ago say he didn't get his delivery. FedEx POD said it was delivered to his address and to someone with his name. But the signature said "C19" so he claimed he never got it.
Not sure how FedEx got his full name right if they didn't deliver it to him, but since there was no signature, I had to eat it and deliver another at no charge.

You are so right. Not sure how they can lose these things. Most have a half dozen shipping labels with addresses secured to all side. And then they put those little barcode BOL# stickers all over the pallets too. In order for them not to know what to do with a pallet they'd have to somehow pull off all the plastic wrap, all the dozen or so stickers, the manufacturer labels and packing lists that are typically on the boxes or goods somewhere.
Even if they did lose ALL of that, God forbid they look at the manufacturer name of the stuff and pull the BOL paperwork from those shippers and figure it out. Nope.
You're right, they must have a frequent customer card at the scrap yard or something.
Had a USPS package disappear again. "In transit to next blah blah blah" in Denver on December 4th, never heard from again. It was a present I had to ship overseas and now will be late.
The thing that pisses me off about Amazon is it'll tell you "it may be lost, you can request a refund now" but you actually can't. Every refund option they have requires you to ship something back. They don't have an option for "the carrier fucking lost it so I have nothing to send back" even when their system is telling you it is lost.
New York USPS sorting facilities are the worst for shipping overseas too. If you're shipping something like a laptop, it's got really high probabilities of disappearing (greater than 50/50 in our experience). People bitch about the common carriers, but nothing beats the government one for QOS. Carrier song: "It's a union life with self policing for me, a tidy life with free shit, that's not for you it's for me...".
Amazon charged a restocking fee the last time it happened too. Package clearly stolen at the NY hub, no restocking possible, but they wouldn't refund it or ship another without charging a surcharge. Unfortunately, the US Gov will never let the USPS be bankrupt and shutter.
Another thing that pisses me off as well is any time something ships via USPS (package) they leave a slip in my mailbox with some bullshit reason for not delivering. "driveway not accessible" "no safe place" blah blah blah. My mailbox is a bit down the road from the house. I've called their customer support on it before and they claim that drivers aren't obligated to deliver packages if your mailbox is more than 1/2 a mile from your house.... So ever f'n time I have to go down to the post office, wait in line for an hour and a half, to get my package "delivered" to me. Makes me want to invoice them.
If I had a choice of choosing carriers, I'd NEVER select USPS. Sadly that option for ecommerce went the way of the dodo years ago.
Most of the problems with UPS and Fedex often boil down to an issue with a individual carrier or employee. But USPS? That's systematic, unionized and government propped bullshit. Sometimes you get a good carrier (postman), but the system itself is the root cause.

5 days to go from Denver to Denver? I like that.
Got an update last night, its spent three days going from Castle Rock to Castle Rock.
All of my Black Friday and cyber Monday orders all showed up yesterday.
My front porch looked like Santa?s sleigh took a big dump on it.
Also had a package that I ordered Saturday arrive as well. It was just sitting there after its two day journey piled in amongst all of the veteran packages that had just finished their two week tour.

Got a shipping notice for an Amazon order this morning for an item I ordered last night. So really the only thing that's happened is the label has been printed. UPS tracking says it has not been picked up yet. Hasn't been picked up and I already have a notice: "Your Package Will Be Delayed"
Well, it has snowed recently.

Pretty much correct, though it appears the Amazon guy put the pot where it would get knocked over when the door was opened, scattering dirt all over where he just swept.

A couple weeks ago I ordered a Blu-ray from BestBuy and a scope from Cabelas (shipping to Colorado Springs).
Surprised to see the Blu-ray was sent from Parker and the scope from Grand Junction.
The scope arrived the next day. The Blu-ray a week later.

Maybe not in all situations. Had purchased some special rice through amazon. Arrived as promised but the packaged amount didnt match the ad, 8oz bags instead of 12oz, so didnt get the promised amount of product. Sent in a question that item was wrong and should I send it back. Got an email from Amazon apologizing for the error and that they didnt want it sent back but would send the correct item. This may be because it was a food product or because it wasnt worth the cost to ship back (low value, high weight). Who knows.

While funny, the portrayal of the Amazon delivery guy is BS. They are about the most careless and clueless when delivering a package. I have several videos of packages being "tossed", and one of them managing to kick one our sidewalk lights, shattering it. No note left, no attempt to clean it up, nothing.
Even my dumbass postman is better than they are. Literal dumbass, I've talked to him.
I have 7 packages inbound via USPS right now:
1 of them will be delivered today, a full 13 days after the tracking number originally said it would be delivered
2 of them are going to be delivered today (no less than 24 hours late for both)
3 of them are currently "lost, in transit to the next facility" but no actual location and "will arrive late".
The last one is coming from a person I know, and it was dropped off 3 days ago, but still shows "USPS Waiting for item"...
S.T.U.P.I.D.
Of the three boxes I have coming via UPS:
All 3 are on schedule, with known locations, and running on time.
(Added the worst USPS offender - I literally forgot about it.)

In a slightly off topic note, two weeks ago I had something arrive two days early. It came on a Sunday, and I had ordered on a Saturday. And not ordered Saturday morning, ordered like... Saturday at 4:30pm. Note, I live on the west slope, there is no hub here. I was shocked. I'd have to dig to figure out what carrier, I don't think it was USPS. Not particularly valuable either.
ETA: It was so out of the ordinary I was joking with my wife that their AI has gotten so advanced they know what you're going to order before you do and pre-ship it.
My last shipment from USPS via Rock your Glock decided to take a 5 day nap in Denver. Weight of parts sub oz to replace the ones that went bonking around the room when working on rebuilding my slide.
That record has now been bested by a shipment from NOE which arrived in Denver on the 15th. I only ordered a temp sensor for the mold and furnace. Priority mail use to be pretty good, now I wonder what priority it has. The package must be shy, I think it is still in the delivery truck that it came on.

I ordered a ton of stuff recently, Fedex was generally 1 day late, UPS was surprisingly good and USPS, well read the above posts. Most of the vendors have been using alternates at this point based on the USPS issues. The best one was DHL, ordered something from Sweden on Black Friday and it was delivered the following Thursday. Sent a Christmas card on the same day.
Mat got there in 5 days.
Still waiting for the card.
How does that happen?
I just don't know, tired as whatever on the shipping crap.
The package just arrived; the last bit of travel averaged about .2 mph. I am not saying I can walk faster than that; but most people who can walk, will walk much faster than that.
I only think the package arrived is that it was insured and I asked for updated tracking on the package.
The label was clear and easy to read; the box looks like someone used it as a shuttle cock for a good week or two.

I love UPS.
Except when they deliver my packages to the wrong address.
You?d think technology (GPS, tracking systems, etc) would eliminate those kinds of errors.
Once they take the human beings out of the equation and let robots and technology do everything we should be good to go.

We had a package take 13 days to come from C-Springs via USPS. I could have walked there and back and picked it up myself faster. Then we send a package to NY and it gets there in 3 days. There seems to be no rhyme or reason.

Pony Express
April, 1860, to October, 1861 - 81 weeks
Between the Missouri River and the Pacific coast, the Pony Express carried mail rapidly overland on horseback for nearly 2000 miles.
The cost of the mail was at first $5 per one half ounce but was later reduced to $1 per one half ounce.
AND, of course, the human cost:
There is historical documentation that four Pony Express riders were killed by Indians; one was hanged for murder after he got drunk and killed a man; one died in an unrelated accident; and two froze to death.

To answer the OP's question, the way delivery services make money is that you and I aren't willing to drive halfway across the country and back just to deliver birthday gifts (most especially to that aunt or uncle you disliked ever since they were pinching your cheeks and talking down to you when you were 5).
Since BladesnBarrels mentions the Pony Express, let's not forget that riders were as young as 11 although the average age was about 20 and that the original owners had to sell it at auction after losing $900,000 (their $700,000 investment plus a $200,000 deficit).

More stuff lost in USPS purgatory...
I just don't get how they suck, SOOO badly...
And a number of sellers that I have dealt with won't ship any other method. I choose UPS or Fedex if possible.
In all honesty, I have seen better shipping times since the holidays have blown over. The last couple of things I have ordered have actually shown up a day or two before I expected them.
Another weird thing is I ordered something small recently and the cheapest shipping ($7.99) was for UPS 2 day air.
I sent a small package via USPS 1st class mail to Oshkosh, WI yesterday with an expected delivery date of next Friday!
I also sent out on Monday a slide/barrel/bushing for one of my 1911s to a gunsmith in Ohio to get it flush cut with a reverse cone via Priority Mail, not scheduled for delivery until tomorrow. A gun I sold/shipped last Saturday that was supposed to be delivered today to Florida is now supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

Digi-key or Mouser? Lol...
I've ordered quite a bit from Mouser in the last few months, and they always offer the $7.99 UPS 2-day "upgrade".
I sent a USPS priority package out on 1/5, 3-day delivery from CO to AZ... it didn’t leave Denver for more than a week.

That's because they are shipping from TX which is only 2 day UPS gnd.
I always chooses Fed-Ex @ the same price and never have any issues.
My wife had a package delivered from Europe. It came DHL and arrived in four days.
Every time I order something from the east coast it takes USPS at least double that amount of time.

I sold a text book, and it hasn't even scanned for Acceptance for 5 days. I get Fked and USPS gets the money.
Well my parts to the gunsmith still haven't been delivered, I'm guessing Tueday with the holiday tomorrow. On the plus side yesterday I did receive some grips I ordered from Amazon on Friday, also I had a very important document overnighted to me via UPS on Friday with a delivery promise of noon Saturday. At about 11:50 the driver pulled up, go figure.
Another envelope I sent yesterday Express Mail that is supposed to be delivered on Tuesday still isn't showing in the usps system. Hahaha, what a pleasure it is dealing with the post office.

the latest one is. The daughter called. Said Hey i sent you & mom a package, threw in some oranges from the neighbors orchard down the road.
BUT, that 3 day package we sent 3 days ago. yeah?
Well for some reason it's in Tn, after stopping in NC, overnight. Expected delivery date. ....... 3 more days.
I don't ship stuff often, so I always forget that UPS starts at $10, minimum, to send an envelope in state. Screw that. I'm sure a commercial account would be cheaper, but I don't have one. Even the post office wants $4.00. It cost $.15 more to ship to Arizona than to Colorado Springs. For the rest of them, I'll just drive there. I could have been half way to Longmont in the time it took me to stand in two lines anyway.
Open pirate ship account.
I do not have usps commercial rate (small businesd) account. I don't even know it exist for small businesses.
I do have a ebay shipping rate when sold on ebay, but that is it.
I found out there is a pirate ship. They charge as good of a rate as ebay shipping rate for USPS.

Interesting result.
Someone sent me a check from Colorado Springs via Priority Mail - Tracking history to the Denver Distribution Center.
About a week there and one update that said it would be late, but was still on its way, but showing still at the Denver Distribution Center.
Received a plain envelope with the check in it and a typed piece of paper that said it was delivered to the wrong mailbox and since it was a check, they thought I would want it.
The envelope had no return address and only the code for the Denver Distribution Center on the Postmark - 802 (just 3 numbers)
No signature on the letter. Nothing else. Tracking history shows it still at the Denver Distribution Center.
Damn happy to get the check!

I've noticed UPS seems to have hit a new low in providing crappy service. Until recently I would've said they're far better than FedEx. No longer. Just in the last 30 days I had one package lost in OKC (very large, 94 pound box), one package torn open and contents lost, and EVERY SINGLE DELIVERY for the past 3 weeks has been not one day, but at least two days, late.
Right now I'm waiting for a Next Day Air package shipped 02/10/2021 from So Cal. That was last Wed. Should've been here by Fri at the latest. But no... It was "impacted" by the recent severe weather...that didn't start until 3 days after the package was due. It's still sitting in the terminal in Altus...maybe it'll get delivered today, maybe it won't. Who knows? UPS sure as hell doesn't. And this package is susceptible to damage from the severe cold so even if it's eventually delivered I'm curious to see if the item is even still usable.
FedEx has set the bar for poor service extremely high. UPS seems to be taking that as a challenge to "out suck" FedEx. And I gotta say, Brown's making a real go of it...

I'm having an HVAC part overnighted via UPS, let's home it gets here soon! No worries about tonight, but tomorrow might be a little frosty if it doesn't get here.
Fortunately we have three different fireplaces to keep anything from getting too out of whack, and that part of the furnace is working but noisy so I could fire it up if necessary.
Had a package ship FedEx 2-day.
Shipped on the 15th and arrived today.
They blamed it on the weather. It sat in the first facility from the 15th until the 21st.
Must have been a major weather event in Mississippi that they couldn?t move packages for six days.
When I had to mail stuff to people on the board, I just spent half a day driving all over the state and everyone was happy.
Thought this was funny. I can have my items tomorrow for free. Or I can pay extra to get them two days from now. Or I can pay quite a bit extra to get them tomorrow.

Yep, the same sort of screen I saw at Battery Junction on a few of my orders. Free to close to $100 with most on the same day. I think the free day was posted as having a wider window by a few days.
I had another shipper with about the same response on price structure. Free items all shipped by DHL which entered the local USPS without going thru the black hole of time at Denver.

My latest order from Battery Junction is taking a ridiculous amount of time via DHL. I can't wait 2 weeks for batteries I kinda needed in a week for my trailer TPMS sensors. I just hate paying $6 for a $2 battery local or even $5 on Amazon. To top it off, two of the items are backorder and were never indicated as such on the item or in the cart/checkout. Not until i got an email 2 days later. I'm probably done ordering from them.
Amazon keeps insisting on shipping me heavy items via USPS. Of course they leave me a notice in the mailbox that either my mailbox is full or too small for a 50lb. bag of dog food. Of course driving into my copious driveway space to drop it by the front door is obviously not the right answer.
If the USPS can't do the job, then they should just end their relationship with Amazon. If I stop picking these shipments up at USPS to have them returned, then maybe Amazon might end the relationship.

At a buddy's house, they literally opened their van door, dropped it, and dipped out. Multiple packages in the driveway, in the rain.
Good for them
I've had packages left just inside the chain link gate...in the rain. Made it a whole 20 feet closer to the house than the mailbox.
So my buddy and I did an Alaska hunt two years ago. He killed a brown bear and I killed a moose. Had the hides tanned and the bear skull cleaned in Alaska, then all was to be sent to my buddies house for his taxidermist to do a shoulder mount on the moose, and a rug/wall mount with the bear hide.
Everything was shipped together at the same time from the taxidermist in Alaska back on 12-20-20. The hides and bear skull arrived at my buddies house in about 10 days, BUT the moose antlers were MIA. Finally on 6-8-21, my buddy was contacted that the antlers had been located and sure enough 10 days later they arrived. Only took 6 months to go from Anchorage to middle of Kansas.
How the heck does a crate with 55" moose antlers get mis-placed.
And more recently, I sold a bunch of small caliber bullets to a guy in Cali. Shipped in the flat rate box. Only thing that showed up at his house was the front and the back of the box that I shipped the bullets in. I even used packing tape around the outside of the box to ensure it held together. Way to go USPS, you could screw up a wet dream.
Seems like those idiots place those large packges on a side where there are spacious, and forget to load em to the truck/belt/sorter. This shit happends to me about 2 golf clubs per 100. Just that it is about 2weeks delay ,not 6mo.

Kinda looks like they are mostly opened, so it's probably just sorting through them looking for the good stuff, and dumping the trash.
It would be interesting to know if they were all given to the same driver (sort of assumed given the questioning of a driver).
Were they marked delivered in the fedex system?
Reported missing/stolen?
Insurance paid out? (lol, good luck)
Could be a secluded spot for a porch pirate to sort through if the details don't fit the driver...

It happened a bit ago. I do recall reading that the landowner "opened a few packages trying to find addresses".
If true that it was the landowner, I'm going to call BS on their excuse. At the very least, they were curious as to the value of contents before deciding if they should do the "right thing". They thought they found a free christmas moment until they realized everything they opened was crap they had no interest in. Best not go to prison over used underwear, rained-on bath towels, and an instapot.

I get about 20 boxes a day delivered by FedEx for my business. Some of the delays have been frustrating boarder line comical. Stuck in Henderson for 5 days even though other boxes on the same order pass right through. 3 boxes on the same truck yet 1 gets sent back to the manufacturer as “address undeliverable”. Pretty much the driver doesn’t want to go back into the truck for the last box. It’s become a joke.
It happened a bit ago.

Such small items are easy to lose.
Ordered a 3D printer from Prague, CZ on November 26th. It was shipped FedEx in two packages on December 7th. Haven't received them yet, but here are their two paths so far:
The printer itself:
Prague, CZ
Koeln, DE
Prague, CZ
Koeln, DE
Frankfurt, DE
Memphis, USA (at this time I breathed a sigh of relief, but...)
Winnipeg, CA
Memphis, USA
Colorado Springs, USA
I learned, I'm not holding my breath.
The second package, which I believe is filament for the printer:
Prague, CZ
Koeln, DE
Prague, CZ
Koeln, DE
Memphis, USA (day after the above package arrived in Memphis, and as before, I relaxed, but...)
Koeln, DE (yes, ALL THE WAY BACK TO GERMANY!)
Indianapolis, USA
And that's where it sits this morning.
Given two separate shipments, I guess I can understand effing up one's routing, but both? And by so much? Imagine how cheap FedEX would be if they didn't double their work?

For my business I get about 12 or more boxes delivered a day via FedEx. Various size boxes and weight. All come from the same manufacturer. For the past month, a certain driver won’t deliver the long boxes. These boxes are aprox 8# ,7 feet long and 4x4. Imagine a box that would hold an iron drapery rod. 11 times in the past month the driver is marking these deliveries as “refused by recipient” and taking them back to FedEx in Denver. Even on redeliveries he is doing this. FedEx is sending them back to the manufacturer unless I can catch the tracking that day and see the refusal note. Then I have to put a pick up request and get them myself at FedEx. FedEx doesn’t give a shit. They keep claiming someone is refusing these boxes, even though the other stuff is being delivered just fine. I’m in a whirlwind of pissed off you can’t imagine.

Oh, no... I can imagine. I've lived it. I'm so frustrated and disgusted by the attitudes I see nearly every day with every business I interact with. No one cares and no one is accountable. And I don't hold back what I'm thinking anymore to be polite or reasonable. I let them know, right away, exactly how I feel. I just can't pretend to put up with it any longer.
When someone simply just does their job anymore I'm so pleasantly shocked I react like they've just done me the biggest favor ever in my entire life.

Nobody in Hawaii even bothers tracking their packages... they will get here when they get here. Sometimes Amazon prime stuff shows up in 2 days, sometimes it takes 3 weeks. Amazon is in the process of building an actual distro center on the island, but currently they just use rented space for high-demand items (which explains why some items arrive in only 2 days). Shipping anything that isn't through amazon or USPS flat rate adds about $8/lb. Frustrating when there are important things coming via your way and you have no idea when they'll actually arrive.

It took us 2 months to get a UPS (battery backup) shipped to Guam. Final leg, the airline refused it due to height? 2 flat boxes on a pallet and I know it wasn't a puddle jumper flying in there as I've talked to cargo pilots that fly in there. I've also seen them loading the large containers on UA passenger flights.
Just guessing they contracted with a passenger airline in this case. Only by having the freight forwarder break it down into 2 separate boxes did it make it. Then, to make matters worse, Stupid Eaton didn't include the signal cable.

A family member of mine moved overseas with his family this past summer for a few years to do military stuff.
Their stuff left before them but didn't get there until 6 months after them. Ouch.

Yeah, our stuff got here surprisingly fast - only took about 8 weeks. Took us longer than that to find housing.
Had a package shipped to my house in Thornton. Arrived in Denver early on Monday. By the end of the day Monday it was in the Springs. Twenty nine minutes later it was back in Denver. It spent the next day in transit, maybe in a wooden cart pulled by a donkey. Early this morning it arrived back in Colorado Springs. It says it should be arriving tomorrow.

Yeah. I couldn?t make the drive from Denver to the Springs in such a short time. Then again, I don?t drive a mail truck.
I don?t know if the USPS tracking system is just that awful or if someone who works there has a sense of humor and updates the tracking just for the WTF? effect.

IIRC, there is no Colorado Springs USPS distribution center. All the mail in The Springs get's trucked up to Denver to be sorted (so I imagine there's a table or room that they call the "COS Distribution Center" up in Denver).
there is truth to that. Postal policy changes quite frequently. For a period of time all sorting was exclusively done in Denver and in Grand Junction, Colorado (covering e.g. Montrose, Delta, Rifle, part of Utah as well, etc.). Then for a period of time, even the Grand Junction region was arbitrarily trucked to Denver, sorted as going to the Grand Junction region, and driven back, where I think it may have then been sorted for destination delivery @ Grand Junction. AKA, a massive waste of resources and time considering the western slope mail.
I've never heard of CO Springs having a mail sorting location so it literally is contained inside the Denver facility.
Source: Friends with an upper level USPS manager. Although my info is a couple years old, for all I know GJ may once again do regional sorting, this crap changes all the time. There is very little chance of CO Springs ever doing it though as the proximity to Denver's facilities would make it a waste of resources.

All I know is that it takes 3 weeks for mail to get from Colorado Springs to Wichita, KS, while it only takes about 5 days for mail to get from Chicago to Wichita.
Something about USPS in CO stinks.
Had a package originate in Palm Coast, FL on 2/3. Three scans there, and then POOF...
Two weeks later on 2/17, after 2 inquiries to the usps, package was scanned in Denver.
After pinballing around denver metro it was finally delivered on 8/22 at 8:15PM.
Not including the "label created" and "delivered" scans, there are 13 additional scans...
2/17: 2 scans Denver Regional 2:41pm, 8:56pm
2/18: 8:03am out for delivery - Aurora
2/18: 8:36am arrived at usps facility Arvada
2/19: 4:17am arrived Denver Regional
2/19: 6:52am arrived Denver regional Annex
2/19: 7:06am arrived Denver Regional
2/19: 7:12am arrived Denver regional Annex
2/20: 12:19pm Arrived at Hub Aurora
2/22: 6:10am out for delivery Aurora
2/22: 8:15PM delivered
Well, if you can believe them, the package that I?ve had being dragged back and forth between Denver and Colorado Springs is supposed to be out for delivery today. Fortunately for me it isn?t anything that will depreciate due to excessive mileage.

My package has a total of 19 scans all together to get from Houston to Denver. That thing has been finger banged more than most peoples sisters.
Usps 3 day priority from CA. Very hard to get graphics card insured at 1300. From the get go, estimate was 4 days. Day 3 it was at denver for 2 days with no movement. Finally Sunday it popped up as being in longmont. Supposed to be signature required but fortunately wife home...... I get a text that's it's been delivered to front lobby...... i have a home. Confirm wife doesn't have it, nope. I call them, they think it's in my neighborhood box. I'm like wtf about my signature...... they said they can sign for me due to covid.... negating the point of the fucking signature, leaving me boned if the seller had tried to scan me.
Same week, yesterday i got my power supply from best buy. Came in a box 4x plus its size with no packing material.
Amazon sent me cpu cooler with no box other than what it came in crushed on one corner.
So gotta build this shit and see if anything is broken.

Did you update your address to "The Thornton" ?

Well, of course. [emoji12]
Bought a cheap ($17) rifle case on Amazon because the seller claimed it would fit...not. It arrived in this huge box with free shipping and is going back in this huge box with free shipping. A UPS truck gets to drive up into the mountains twice with this stupid-size box because the seller lied about dimensions.

Amazon attempted to deliver my $800 printer to my business...at 9:30 last night.[facepalm] I was pleasantly surprised when they called my cell and asked me how to handle it. Less pleased when they offered to deliver it to a nearby address... I told them to redeliver it during business hours. At least they didn't just leave it on in the middle of the parking lot like they have in the past.

I had $700 worth of aluminum (we'll call them paperweights) delivered by FedEx, signature required.
They left the box in the driveway next to one of my trucks.
Also have a stupid sticker coming usps that hasn't moved since 4/5
I had $800 worth of motorcycle parts delivered to the wrong address once. Fortunately my keen detective skills allowed me to track the package down and retrieve it.
I had 12x laptops, so roughly $20,000, delivered to my house last year and instead of my house they left them on my neighbors porch and never rang the doorbell. (They have a Ring camera)….. lucky for me they didn’t walk and the next morning they discovered them and brought them over…
This is how I prefer to pack brass to ship to someone, to protect the boxes from the USPS package smashers. The brass is in 1gal. Ziploc bags 500ct per bag,and bags taped up too. 1500 .223 per MFRB.
Seems to work well, some have arrived damaged, but contents intact. Get the tape on Amazon in 6-packs MUCH cheaper than Office Depot.

Ugh, just trying to get a 1st class package with a .22 thread adapter to my door from AR.

UPS got the garbage one I stupidly ordered off ebay back to the seller in 2 days.

Started out in Commerce City. Only needed to come North about 160 miles. Commerce City to Colorado Springs, back to Commerce City, a few stops in Denver, to Cheyenne, then to Arvada, a few mores stops in Denver, then to Cheyenne, on to Wheatland for a couple of days, then back to Cheyenne and finally delivered 50 miles away. Wow these people smoke something. Time for more drug testing.
