My wife?s dad died two days ago. I don?t say ?father-in-law?, because he was more than that to me. He was my friend.

Jeff had a life to be proud of. When he graduated law school, he served as a JAG in Vietnam (I have a beautiful Colt .45 he brought back, but that?s another story). He got shot down in a helicopter, sustained lifelong (and likely life-ending) effects of Agent Orange, and went on to have a wide-ranging and storied career as an attorney. After the war, he first served in the District Attorney?s Office, prosecuting bad guys. He then went into private practice, and was a Special Prosecutor who took down a dirty sheriff in the late ?70?s. Again in private practice, he occasionally took on criminal defense cases that were ?undesirable?, believing that equal protection under the law actually meant something. I have a copy of a fun photo that was given to him by some fellas who roamed in Southern Colorado back then, who he often defended, and who?s mothers invited him to holiday meals. I think he said they were called the ?Sons? or something... I?d guess he was the safest attorney in town, back then.

That was a long time ago. He since raised 3 girls, one of whom I was lucky enough to marry. His practice became less sexy, but successful. He retired an accomplished attorney, a veteran, a husband and a father. He was a man of honor. He was my hunting buddy. My fishing buddy. My advisor. My confidante. My friend. I?ll miss you, Jeff. I?m so proud to have known you. Rest well. You?ve earned it.

So sorry for your loss. If you feel you would like to share, could you PM me his name? After reading your post I have a good feeling our families may know each other. My family is also in law, same time as yours and also did some work with people south. Could end up being an interesting connection. There are many similarities in time, location, and “client” references.

I never know what to say in moments like these but I believe I can understand where you're at as I have grieved over the death of someone truly significant in my life.

My parents are well & I am close to my husband's parents so I have not had to experience grief alongside my spouse's in their time of loss. I can't imagine the depth of sorrow.

I'm here if you need anything.

That was a wonderfully written comment on the life of such an amazing man. Through your words, I could sense grief of loss and pride and joy in having been a part of this gentle mans life. We would all be blessed to have someone of such character in our lives.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you, your wife and to all who knew and loved this man. May your grieving be brief and your memories strong and sweet.

I'm here for you if you need anything.
