OK Boomer.

From the NY Times:

?Ok boomer? has become Generation Z?s endlessly repeated retort to the problem of older people who just don?t get it, a rallying cry for millions of fed up kids. Teenagers use it to reply to cringey YouTube videos, Donald Trump tweets, and basically any person over 30 who says something condescending about young people ? and the issues that matter to them.

It seems that younger people think that they have a lock on the issues. Maybe but it looks like they have issues but no perspective and are driven by instant gratification without doing the work, part of group think politics. In some of the talk I have heard that the GenZ are like then protesters of the Vietnam war.

I was born in 1955, Boomers were born in the 1943 to 1946 era so I was like 10 years old during the Vietnam war protests and I remember seeing some of the action up close back then and hearing older, college age people discussing the war and the protests, I also remember the older people, parents and uncles that fought in WWII and Korea and their feelings, which were also against the continuation of the war. I has cousins that went to Vietnam and thankfully they all came back, each with their own form of mental damage.

I see the OK Boomer as another division within our country driven by the communist left.

Any thoughts? Please keep it civil.

From what I have seen of Gen Z, they aren't NEARLY as bad as Gen Y. My son (13) and his peers (in BOULDER) pretty much mock the entire existence of the victimhood culture and seem to be coming back to personal responsibility and integrity.

As a side note, once the apple of society's eye, Gen X never seems to get any attention anymore...

I believe the internet has once again confused main stream news and others.

Originally some twitter idiot came out as saying essentially that boomer is like the N word for old people with the young people or some such. (Forget if it was pre/post above article).

It's become a massive meme that's getting widely used as sarcasm/satire off of the original idiot making that statement. Very few people using it in the "wild" as it were are using it seriously in the kind of context of the news article. It's just another tongue in cheek meme that's going to last a few weeks to a couple months then be gone.

Remember when the news bought into the idea that PEPE the frog was created as an alt right white nationalist thing when he's a pretty old meme?

The boomer generation is generally considered to be between mid 40s and mid 60s. Not just mid 40s...unless that was a typo.

I've never heard the term "OK boomer". Never even seen it online until now.

Sorry, but mid 40s is Gen X, my parents were boomers.

This level of maturity is shy the president must be 35 or older. Wish it was the same for all elected officials. Live in the real world before telling others what to do or act.

Hell, both should be gradually raised to 50 or so.

Ignore the inet trends. I coughed into my elbow and someone said I was dabbing or something. Looked at them and said "no I was coughing, wtf is dabbing?" After trying to explaining it to me and the blank, who cares look on my face, they gave up.

We play the circle game also. Some new hire said it was racist and boy did she get an earful from those it was supposed to be offensive to who played.

...Boomers were born in the 1943 to 1946 era...

Baby boomers were born post war, '46 to '64.

It's not a Commie plot to divide the country, it's an internet meme, driven largely by sell proclaimed vcso girls.

Haven't heard of that one either, huh? It's like a valley girl from the '80's, only very social media-centric. They have their own phrases, just like any flash in the pan trend.

As I've always understood it, I'm first year Gen X. Not something I was ever typically proud to admit.

I think it's about as valid as the reports that your children are going to die from halloween this year because somebody somewhere is going to hide a razor blade in candy. (If you're not aware, that's an urban legend, and there's no documented case of a kid dying, ever.)

I'm guessing someone said it, somewhere, some point in time. And the media is masturbating with it because it pisses older people off and gets them clicks, which is entirely all that matters. That doesn't make it a "real thing". It's just something that gets bullshit articles some clicks, and some t-shirts sold for a few "out" individuals who think they are hopping on a trend that doesn't actually exist.

If "OK Boomer" is the best answer they can come up with while they still live in mommy's basement, that doesn't mean much. The Millennials seem to be completely ignorant of who built the technology and infrastructure that they currently enjoy.

Not sure where the NYT part ends and you respond. But

#1: wrong years for boomers

# 2: the protest were going on till early 70's. IIRC 1 of them at the Statue of liberty, 71ish

Putting one born in 55 @ 16, not 10. Just saying.

Also spoiler alert:

Generations as presently defined don't actually exist any more than astrological signs predict behavior. The outrage demonstrated in this thread against a fake moment is self evident of why it's in the news so much... Your manipulatable hatred is so,so,so,so profitable.

Societal mores change, standards of living and technology change. But you can't predict people. I've seen equally as much "trash" in the Boomer generation as the millennial. The exception I make is the generations that survived the great depression on average had better character, but it came from the hardship, coupled with the unity in the war. Boomers as a whole haven't experienced that any more than millenials have.

Surprised the thread made it 15 posts before some ignorant fool once again blamed everything on millenials. Sorry pal, I've been on a payroll since around 14 years old, never lived in mommy's basement as an adult, and the same goes for all my friends and acquaintances in my age group.

ETA: apparently the boomers in your video don't understand that millenials are not Gen Z and vice versa.

I just want to clear up a little something something about Ok Boomer. This is a response to decades of folks of any age literally chastising gen x, millennials, and gen z for basically just trying to live. We have debated everything you’ve wanted us to, argued about false science, been called lazy, useless, and accused of closing down all chain restaurants and malls. The whole thing boils down to this, it’s a yeah, whatever. It’s exhaustion. This isn’t an attack, it’s shrugging our shoulders. It’s, “yeah, sure mom.” It’s, I ain’t gonna debate you on this anymore Uncle Brian. It’s me at seventeen during thanksgiving dinner just rolling my eyes while being told yet again by some relative how wrong I am. It’s being disrespectful but only because you don’t see us as adults. Most of us are forty.

And let’s be real clear who this generational eye roll is at. It’s not at those folks who haven’t denied science, history, or reason. This is not at those of you who marched with Dr. King, protested Vietnam, or rallied about climate change when Earth Day was founded. Ain’t no body coming for y’all. This is about those who have mocked us, telling us we were too young at THIRTY to run for government. The same ones that then turned around and called us bartenders and waitresses and whatever instead of Congresswoman. They did this because we had to get by somehow while we worked our way to the top. We had to fight in a different way.

This is for calling us communists because we wanted to be able to eat. This is for bombing our future. This is for our children, your grandchildren. This is about having to beg to no longer sit at the kids table while we approach our midlife crisis. This is about you refusing to retire but then saying we have no ambition while you still occupy the space we can’t access because you are there.

This is not about age. This is about an abuse of power. About you mocking us and ridiculing us. This is NOT targeted at the teachers who supported us when you wouldn’t listen. To the lady who taught us how to make signs to protest. This isn’t aimed at the trans mama who finally gets to live her authentic life at 65. No, this is directed squarely at everyone who called us stupid but then asked us how to open a PDF. This is about that we were told we needed to go college so we wouldn’t flip burgers but then said we needed to be thankful for flipping burgers with our bachelors degrees but then we also turned around and said, “why are you being mean to folks who flip burgers. All work has value! Maybe we should pay them $15 an hour, this is hard work.” And you said we were stupid and ungrateful and wrong.

This isn’t an attack. This is being done. We are tired of doing the work for you. For answering all the questions. For sending all the emails. For doing it and then you want to rip away everything we’ve worked for and call it your nest egg.

This is for the other folks in your own generation that you’ve abandoned as you gut funding to Medicaid, come after their pensions, and roll back civil rights. This is about everyone, because it’s no longer about you. We are plowing forward with or without you. This is about the fact that we wanted a parent to talk to us like Bernie and Elizabeth and not Trump. We want elders who respect us and elevate our voices and walk the road with us.

We will carve out the America you promised us existed. With equality and justice for all.

Ok, boomer?

I enjoy an automotive enthusiast site that has a very active comments section where social and generational conflicts really play out. It is interesting to see the outright rage the 'Ok Boomer' comments generate in both the boomers and the millennial/gen Z set. One of my favorite comments came from an interchange between a self-identified Gen Xer and a very angry millineal who said 'Ok Xoomer, we're coming for you next'. I chuckled and thought, good luck getting any sort of rise out of a generation collectively characterized by apathy bordering on nihilism.

I get the millineal rage, to a large extent. Lot of them are in their late 30s now. Many combat vets in that age demographic. I imagine it feels as frustrating as a Viet Nam vet getting lumped in with a draft dodger and then blamed for 80s corporate raiding. Funny how neither side sees their reflection in the other.

Judging people by the time frame they were born is just lazy IMO. Most people don't need my judgement. The few who do need my judgement are normally judged by their behavior including actions and words. I'm pretty sure those few people I judge don't really care about my opinion. They are probably correct in not caring.
