Questions About XBox One X

I'm not a gamer. However, I do love flight sims and Microsoft is releasing their latest sometime next year. It's supposed to be incredible. So here's my "OK, Boomer" question:

I have a new Samsung 65" Q7D TV that's supposed to be optimized for gaming...whatever that means. I'd like to have the new flight sim to play on the TV. I'm thinking I'll buy an XBox One X for the new flight sim because apparently I can also use it to play Blu Rays, DVDs, etc. I'm going the XBox route because there's no way my current computer, which works great and I like just fine, will work optimally for the new flight sim.

So the bottom line, is my thinking correct in rather than buying a DVD/Blu Ray player and a new computer, will the XBox work for me? Again, just an occasional DVD/Blu Ray and the flight sim will be run on it.

I've never had a game console so I don't know if it'll be a good fit for those things I want to do.

Xbox will do dvds and stream hulu, netflix etc. As long as the game is released for it it should be fine.
Not sure if flight controllers are available for the xbox or how good they are. So if the controllers matter you need to check beforehand.

I?m not a gamer either but my kid has always had an Xbox and I?m sure he has whatever the latest and greatest is.

Not only does he play games but he watches movies on blu-ray or dvd and he also uses it to stream Netflix, Hulu, etc.

I?m sure it won?t replace your computer for computer type stuff but it seems to do anything media or game related quite well.

I see on https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/microsoft-flight-simulator that it'll be on the Xbox, so if that's the case then yes the console will run it. Games have to run on the console in order to be sold on it (I used to be a compliance tester for the Xbox 360, games had to pass a series of tests in order to be able to be sold. Didn't mean they were good, just that they ran and didn't fail spectacularly :P). Looking online, it looks like yes it also plays Blu-Rays and DVDs.

One suggestion is to run your TV in game mode whenever you are using it to game. The video processing in other modes introduces a very slight delay that is infuriating when you are trying to make quick movements. I found out the hard way when I couldn't drive for shit in GTA on other modes.

^^ Yeah, it has a game mode. I'll be sure to switch it.

I've read the XBox isn't ideal for playing Blu Rays vs a dedicated Blu Ray player but it sounds like it's a case of you pretty much have to have instruments to measure the difference. I doubt my eyes will be able to tell.

I have an XBox One S. I primarily bought it for Ultra HD/HDR Blu Ray playback and some light gaming with my 4K Sony XBR. At the time, the Ultra HD Blu Ray players cost just about as much as the XBox.

You should be fine.

I used my Xbox one x for Blu-ray. The argument against is generally that you?ll wear out your Xbox faster.it did take some setup to get the Xbox working properly with my receiver.

I have a very good grasp on the Xbox and currently have an X as my main console. I have answers to a lot of the questions above.

There are already flight sticks on the market if that's your thing. A quick Amazon search brought up a Thrustmaster for Xbox and PC for $80. That's a trusted and well supported brand that goes back a long way.

"I've read the XBox isn't ideal for playing Blu Rays vs a dedicated Blu Ray player" - this is due to most people only having game controllers to interface with it. They turn themselves off after a few minutes of inactivity so when you want to do something you have to turn the controller back on. They also don't have the familiar buttons of a dvd/tv remote. You can fix this a number of ways including an official media remote.

A few people might say to save money by buying an S instead of the X if you don't have a 4k tv (I don't know if your tv is 4k) but I'll bet this game will benefit greatly from the extra computing power the X will get you. Microsoft doesn't screw around with first party games on their hardware and this is a big title. When you buy the game I'd highly recommend you get the digital version. It's so nice to not have to put a disk in when you just want to play something on a whim.

There's also a new console coming about a year from now but don't worry about that. This means the X could see some price drops. Microsoft has also been on a mission to make sure that the games you have will work on upcoming hardware. Sometimes even better which is the whole story behind the X. This is good news in case you end up loving it and decide to upgrade.
