I'm presently obsessed with the 458 SOCOM. I've had the upper since an arfcom group purchase from Teppo Jutsu back in 2007, but have really only been able to really shoot it since I got set back up for reloading a couple of years ago. There's such a large variety of bullets and powders available for it that load development takes up a lot of my shooting time.
Anyway, I'm currently saving up for a 10.5" Tromix upper and will SBR it and have a Hybrid 46 in jail as well. I hope to get it out hunting for bison after I finish my BSME. Naturally, I'm considering a 375 SOCOM down the road too.

250 rds of blasting ammo (and maybe 3 gun)

If you run it for 3 gun take a video, of the march and you shoulder after the match.
Where you doing your BSME?

I had a chance to use my Hybrid on the .458 Socom for the first time a week ago with some
500gr and 300gr a friend had loaded.
The 500gr were on the Labradar at bit over 1000fps from a 16" barrel.
It's still pretty loud with the Hybrid, probably not hearing safe.

Yeah, I've read that the 458 doesn't suppress especially well since it is fairly low pressure w/ a large bore. I've heard good things about it sounding good with Trail Boss, so will see if I can't get that to work whenever I get the SBR built. May need an XL gas port w/ an adjustable gas block too.
The Bowers is supposed to be the best for suppressing large bore AR rounds, but it's a beast of a can at 11.25" and 23.2 oz.
Yep...lovin my 458 SOCOM...pretty early in my load development cycle, but so far, so good.

It can be never ending with this cartridge. If you want 45-70 type performance though, you may want to give CFE BLK a try. Got Hornady 350's up to 1875fps with it and the cases didn't show any pressure signs. My load data thus far (As usual, use at own risk):

I'm not a reloader and never plan to be. How is ammo availability?
Plenty of factory ammo out there... SBR, Steinel, Black Butterfly, Buffalo Bore, etc... Ammoseek has 233 items for 458 Socom ammo. Midway also sells and stocks.

It has gotten better since the last Ammo crises. It is north of $2.50 a round for factory 250 - 300 gr. Soft pioint. Just do some searches.
Heck I haven’t shot mine in over 2 years.

Think Black Butterfly has 16 of these load testings. Good way to kill some time and build interest in the round :)

It sure is a fun round to shoot. Though it doesn't get shot much as I would rather shoot my 556 more for the same cost.

Unless you want to hunt with the round, I wouldn't bother looking at the 458. Its expensive to buy factory ammo, even reloading the bullet alone is about the same cost as a factory 556 round. If you are going to shoot it in any large quantity you really need to load your own.
Cool. I was looking to make stupid AR on a ghost lower. Sbr pistol & binary trigger with folding stock

If anyone is interested, this doesn't look like too bad of a price.

Not a dig against you, but I'm hard pressed to recommend anything "budget" when it comes to anything big bore. Getting them built correctly takes different knowledge than a 556 and I've seen silly things come from budget big bore builds before; both online and in person.
Here's a 458 BCA barrel that came into my local shop for example. They've taken too much material off of the bottom lug and then they didn't even bother to de-burr it so it was gouging brass.

No offense taken, just posting something I ran across. The only big bore I have had was an Alexander arms .50 Beowulf, which functioned great. I got rid of it because it didn't fit in with my needs. Now I'm in the market for a hunting caliber AR. My 6.5G is in the shop getting a make over because of poor workmanship. I understand the issues of not going tier 1.

375 socom is a good option for hunting. Flatter shooting than the 458 and shots out to 300 yards are much more realistic with it, so it can be considered a bit more practical. Works with standard AR mags too.
Downsides:
1) Brass costs slightly more than 458, but is directly available from SBR ammo.
2) Less bullet variety and factory loading offerings than other big bores.
3) Cost prohibitive without reloading (like every big bore).
4) It's not as big as 45 or 50 :)
Anyway, this came in yesterday from Tromix. I'm looking forward to subsonic load development.

So far, 10.5" Tromix upper has been flawless. Blasted through ~50 rds of my wide meplat plated bullet reloads, shot over 100 rounds of 450g FMJ's for load development, and put a few fat nosed 405g lead boolits downrange as well with nothing to complain about. Getting very close to getting a decent subsonic load for the 450 FMJ's as well. Going to test out some AA9 this weekend and hoping that is "the" powder for it. I posted more info about that on 458socomfoums dot com for any interested parties. :)
