How many of you folks remember Hubcap Annie's (Jane Withers)? Going through some home clean out and came across this old mug I got in 1984 shortly after I moved here, her shop opened in '83. Jane was quite the character, crazy commercials dressed as a Viking queen, an arrest for stealing hubcaps from cars in the neighborhood to stock the shop which she used to clean up her life and start fresh, a benefactor for many charities. Last I heard was a number of years ago she was in a senior center in the area. As Colfax attempted to "improve" her business no longer fit in-funny to think about now, to me at least.

Anyway, here's a little memorabilia for those that remember her. If anyone would like this mug pm me and we can work at a time/place to meet up near Arapahoe Rd/I-25.

My first thought was I remembered her.

Turns out I was thinking of the Hubcap Lady back in Beaumont, Texas.

Still a neat little piece of advertising memorabilia.

I bought a hubcap from her to replace the one lost while I was borrowing my uncle's Monte Carlo. 1987 I think.

Rumor has it that some of the local kids "provided" good source of inventory as well.

I remember it well. There was a head shop* near by. Was it Freakie's?

That was a long time ago- late '80's for me.

*For those that don't know, a head shop was a store where one was able to purchase marijuana smoking paraphernalia, and other stoner accessories like black light posters and heavy metal band pins to adorn your sweet jean jacket.

....

If on colfax, there was probably another kind of head shop nearby too. [ROFL1]

The last time I saw the store it was on W Colfax in front of the Royal Fork restaurant. By the old Westland mall, just a little south west of where the orileys auto sits now.

My mom was just telling us a story about eating at The Royal Fork at least once a week with her parents.

Now I'm thinking about that area & Moosehill Cantina comes to mind, but that's blocks up the hill...

Irving

Yep. Then a few more blocks up the hill were those little red motel units. Didn't someone get killed with an ax there one year?

ChickNorris

I knew someone who lived there once. Don't think he owned an axe.

Good thing I’ve got a screen protector on my cell, this made me laugh just as I took a drink lol.

I?m not too familiar with Colfax. Where is this compared to Casa Bonita?

Irving
12-02-2019, 15:12
Pretty close I think. Moose Hill Cantina is about a mile or two West of Casa Bonita.

What was the name of the stand alone bar on the south side of Colfax nearish Quail?

Been long gone...

Irving

Wasn't it a Meineke, then some sports bar with a shark sign or something? Am I in the right area?

ChickNorris

I don't think it was ever anything but a bar. Had a pool table.

That's where I learned to play. I was far too young to be hanging around a bar but that didn't seem to matter to the owner. They never charged me for soda & I played pool there every day after school for near eight months

No idea where my parents thought I was.

Guess it wasn't a complete waste of time. I acquired enough skill that much later in college, I paid off an unconsolidated student loan with winnings from playing pool tournaments & side bets.

I just found my old pool cue. Still seems fancy.

Guess thats why I thought of it.

Was it Whiskey Bills? There was a bar in that area(between rental yard and u pump it) that friends band played at back in the late 80's. Little place, didn't take very many people to make crowded.

That place is still there. I think it's called Swig right now. I thought she was talking about on the North side of Colfax, but maybe not.

I just thought of another W. Colfax landmark for 80's hoodlums... Wizard's tattoo.

Is the dirt track behind the cemetery still there at all? We spent a LOT of time riding on that growing up. I know at least half of it was flattened years ago.

There was a dirt track between the park & the cemetery?

We used to get chased off no matter what we weren't or were doing back there.

West Colfax was the hang out. They probably had cruising shut down before you guys got old enough to drive.

Between the cemetery and the houses across the street.

We moved into a house on Normandy which was part of the turn around at the time in 1984. I don't think it lasted much past that as I would have been 1 when we moved in and I have zero recollection of any cruising while I grew up there.

They had cruising shut down before I finished high school. I didn't live in Denver during high school but did cruise west Colfax when came to town to visit. It was shut down when I came to Denver after high school in '85.[blaster]
