View Full Version : 9mm powders?
So, I've been using the same powder for my 9mm loads for probably the last twenty to twenty-five years or so.
I was just curious what powders some of you guys prefer for the 9mm.
Thanks.
My go to powder for 9mm has been win231, but I don't shoot much 9mm anymore and haven't loaded a batch in over 5 years...following this thread.
It's been quite a few years since I've loaded for it as well. Was going to venture out and get some powder and was curious what other people were using these days before I just picked up my old standby.
I like Titegroup. I've used AA#5 and AA#7, BUT I like Titegroup.

Silhouette by western powders. Meters well, very low smoke, no flash.
I was using 231 and was told to try silhouette and its great. 231 was very smokey.

I'm still a beginner so I use unique. I choose to start with it because it's just about impossible to accidentally double charge a round with.

Alliant Power Pistol , Hodgdon HS6 (which is Winchester 540 Ball) the latter because I found a bunch of it at a gun show at half price a few years ago.

TiteGroup (4.1 gr) for 115& 124. it's a little power in the case for a good load. EASY to double charge if you don't pay attention Unique for my 147 gr suppressed rounds.

Alliant BE-86 is what you seek. Silhouette is my 2nd favorite.

Another vote for the titegroup here. I also use it for 45.
Titegroup for blasting ammo.
Power Pistol for accurate ammo.
Oops, I definitely meant Titegroup, not TAC.
Yeah. I thought TAC was a rifle powder.
Clean Shot from Shooter World, runs very similar to Tite Group but at a better price point and meters great.
Thanks for all of the replies so far.
I didn't make it out to pick up power today but may try tomorrow. Since Titegroup has had quite few recommendations I might pick up a pound and give it a try.

Is there a dramatic cost difference to where just using Power Pistol is prohibitive? Or another issue (temp sensitivity?)

CFE pistol has been my go-to pistol powder for 9, 40, and 45. Meters very nice, would be pretty easy to notice a double-charge, and burns very clean at anything super light loads.
Still hoping to find Alliant Sport Pistol locally as a substitute for Titegroup.
W231 for me. It’s dirty but it works for 9, .38, 40 and.45 so it’s easy

Now that you say that, I seem to remember seeing it last I was there too. Odd that I remember the name.
Anyhow, I dont reload (yet) & was looking for FFFFg for my rocket recovery system deployment charges.
Been using bullseye for years for all my pistol stuff. Yep, can blow black smoke but its taken years to use up 8lbs when you use 3 to 5 grns per shell depending on 9 or 40 or 45 :)

When I was loading 9mm my go to was Vihtavuori N320. More expensive but cleaner.
N320 is excellent in 9x19. But it can be hard to find and is always expensive.

Ray, If you haven't made it out yet, I may be in your neck of the woods this weekend. I've got some extra Titegroup on hand.

But at 2000 rounds to the lb $40 goes a long way.

Thanks. Actually heading to Wyoming for round two of Christmas. I definitely appreciate the offer but I?ll probably make it somewhere to pick some up soon. Heck, I bet I could pick up some in Wyoming this weekend.

Been using it and Winchester Autocomp in 40 and 45 and very happy with both. The CFE Pistol will mostly be my go to since as you noted it burns very clean from what I've noticed even in my pistol can it seems to be far cleaner than everything else I've tried.

You get an average of 1600 with TG at approx $20ish per lb.

I like Titegroup, I can get about 1k 9mm per pound- but it's dirty. I'm surprised that no one has suggested Clays, though. It's cheap, clean, efficient, and has been my go-to powder for all pistols for years

I'm a powder snob, though. Only the finest Finnish imports for my Czech imports.

Clays powder is awesome.. super clean. I use it in of course shotgun and 38 special. In the small case 9mm it is super easy to get pressure problems with as little as 1/10 grain differences. There are a few instances where people have tried it and had issues and lots of people who love it and it works great.

4-4.2 gr using a 115 or 124 bal . I like unique for my 147's suppressed load. Looking at some CFE pistol, or Shooters worl.

I got some titegroop and bullseye and loaded a 100rds of 9mm and 45 with each in a few different grain weights. Titegroop is definitely the powder I will be going with from now on.
I just did 150 9mm 115gr with bullseye and went out and tested some yesterday against some commerical stuff of 115gr, seemed the same. Have another 150 to do that I have primed up. Using a T7 turret press I think that is 700 pulls on the handle to make 150. I was weighing the pros and cons of getting a conversion for my Dillon 550 from 223, 1400 pulls verses something close to 300 to do 300 rounds is tempting.
I have Universal and Longshot in bulk. I'm leaning on using the Universal because I like Longshot for my shotguns. Anyone using Universal? It's not a speed demon, but I'm hoping it works for plinkers.

I've used Universal in 9mm & 40 with good success
