View Full Version : Presidential no fly zones
What aircraft does that apply to?
Are there exceptions or exemptions?
Was watching the president at daytona and saw at least 2 aircraft land at the airport next to the track while he was completely exposed giving the command to start engines and a short interview.

Would be interesting to hear from those who know for sure.
I would suspect that the incoming flights were team owners, drivers/wives/family, and or the ultra rich folks attending the event as well.

I don't know what the Secret Service procedures are but would expect that they coordinate with FAA on any no-fly zones. I had a flight home to Hawaii delayed for 45 mins or so for a Presidential "no fly" zone -- wasn't surprised or annoyed by it until my father told me the "no fly" wasn't for the President (Clinton) but for his limo being airlifted from Hickam to Waikiki ... IMO, that was asinine. I could kind of see Trump telling FAA to minimize the use of "no fly" zones ...

Geofencing for drones...

The folks flying in for the race would have already been there when the President arrived. Saw the fly over. Was pretty cool stuff. The motorcade leading the pace laps was also pretty cool.

What a coincidence. I was on a 747 too! Yahoo!
Bad wreck on the final lap. Ryan Newman's car was spun into the outside wall where it flipped over and had another car plow into the driver's side window at speed. He was taken out of the car and sent to the hospital in an ambulance. Prayers go out to Ryan Newman and his family.

Calling NASCAR fans... Is that fuel leaking out? If so, how is it not ignited by the flame? Was waiting for the car to be engulfed in flames. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200218/d49d7f20c4365f39d6ea5e10ee9abd68.jpg
Was wondering the same thing.
I'm not sure what it was. It looked like coolant, but it was coming from the rear of the car. They don't use antifreeze anyway and use high pressure water cooling. The fuel cells that they run do a good job of containing the fuel.
Statement on status of Roush Fenway Racing driver Ryan Newman (https://www.nascar.com/news-media/2020/02/17/statement-status-roush-fenway-racing-driver-ryan-newman/)
Daytona Beach, Florida (February 16, 2020) — Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center. He is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening.
We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation and we will provide more information as it becomes available.
I think that liquid you are wondering about is urine due to the driver pissing himself.

More likely coolant. Radiators/coolant systems easily compromised in crashes. Fuel cells are protecected well by frame/cage in Nascar. They have bladder in fuel tank and check valve on filler tube. Fortunately fuel fires are pretty rare in Nascar.
With severity of impacts and damage any components of fuel system could have been damaged and allowed fuel to pour out. May have been luck that kept it from igniting before track safety hit it with extinguishers.

That crash was brutal, will make the highlight reel for years to come.
I thought it was oil, maybe from the differential. I think they run coolers on them sometimes or that was violent enough it could have cracked or broke it.
If it was coolant, it likely would have been steaming like crazy, and that's not what I saw. The diff lube is pretty thick and there's not that much there, about 2 quarts.
ETA: It could have been oil. The dry sump system has an oil tank that sits behind the driver. The oil also isn't as volatile as gas.
Ac system. Cool suits pump chilled air to the helmet to keep the driver cooler. Simple ice filled heat exchangers that by the end if the race are water.
These are behind the driver, some in the trunk.

Temps weren't very high for the race. Most just use a helmet cooler.

I thought I saw track temps were 120 at some point during the race yesterday, but that was earlier in the day.
Prayers to Ryan and his family for sure, I hope he ends up on the good side of stuff when he's up and around again.
Having been a fan of the sport since the 80's, and raced on the track myself for several years.........you cannot block a faster car, especially during the final laps....bad shit always happens. Newman knew what he was trying to do, and he's been in the game long enough to know the consequences of blocking.

Florida winters. Brrrr. I hope everyone was dressed warm enough.
Track temps are not, sitting behind a big c8 and exhaust running underneath you can heat the cabin up.

The president will be in Colorado Springs tomorrow appearing at the World Arena. Adjust your travel plans accordingly.

Appreciate the heads up.
Newman discharged and walked out of the hospital today...
Yeah, just amazing. I guess we will get more details later on the extent of his injuries.
