A co-worker found a firearm today along a Metro area Highway, This is not as unusual as you might think, beings that we work along the Highways daily.
Anyway, he would like to legally be able to claim it & keep it, Buthelezi and I do not know the proper way to do this. And of course be able to find out if is a discarded, reported stolen firearm or reported lost before starting any filing of a claim if such a thing exists in this fine state.
So, can anybody point me in the right direction to tell my co-worker ?
Have you contacted local law enforcement?
Great. You just found a murder weapon and now your prints are all over it.
Figure out when it was manufactured, and then see if he can describe who he bought it from in a private party sale back in 2010. Golly, did he have handlebar mustache? Maybe kind of heavyset, no wait, kind of normal, ah hell maybe you all forgot by now.

In reality there is a significant chance it is reported lost or stolen. If you contact local, they will want all personal information and how you acquired it. You could take it to a pawn shop, which is obligated to hold it a few days and run it by LEO. If you can pick it up, it's clear.
If you take it to a pawn shop and it comes back stolen, wouldn't the popo come looking for you?

^^ This. I watch true crime shows, there have been cold cases solved by someone finding a tossed firearm and turning it in.
Cases solved, or suspect found?

I would report it to the Colorado State Patrol. I am not a lawyer. This may be wrong advice. Ususal disclaimers apply.

Let me clear a few things up,
I didn’t find it, all the ones that I have found have been so rusted & corroded or so damaged by the landscaping crew running a brush hog over them and damaging them so bad that they were scrap metal, that I would take a shovel and give them a proper burial.
I let this guy know he should just call the State Patrol & turn it over to them, but he was wanting to know if there was a way to find out if it was reported stolen or lost and if it could be claimed to keep it.
By the way, it was found near a major accident scene from several months ago where several vehicles left the pavement violently.

Didn’t know about that, I’ll let him know to check there.

Tell me this individual did not take possession of the item in question?
If they did they just made things more complicated than need be.
I would think the wisest course of action would be to contact the municipality it was found in and do not offer that they found a firearm. Merely state you have "found" property. The responding officer should be able to guide the finder to the appropriate resource within the department for the possibility of ability to claim it.
I dont see it happening though honestly.
Solved.
Sorry I was making a joke about blaming the murder on the guy that turned it in just because that's fast and easy.

No worries. Some crimes are solved by some really, really long odds on finding weapons or other evidence.
I remember seeing a Forensic Files episode where a guy had fired a warning shot into the ground in the front yard of his home during an altercation. Many years later there was a murder and they were trying to figure out if he did it. They managed to find the bullet in the ground and it matched up to the murder bullet. Seemed like a 'needle in a haystack' moment.
