View Full Version : .22 Rifle for 4-H???
So everything we have is got a bull barrel. I need to find a .22 that will work for my 11 year old in 4-H this summer. I've been told the CZ 457 is a good choice. I'd like to find something local so my son can check it out. It has to be less than 7.5 pounds and have a barrel smaller than .675" at the end. Thoughts?
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well.
Thanks so much.

Kinda hard to go wrong with the CZ if it meets your specs. He would be able to pass it to his son.
Ruger American is a good candidate.
Savage Mark II for budget rifle.

Thanks. I appreciate your thoughts. I've never had a CZ before, perhaps it's time to order one.
Thanks again.

I like 22 lever rifles for beginning shooters of all ages. Working the lever gets them used to mechanically controlling the firearm, and I think that mechanical control helps build confidence while teaching them muzzle control and finger discipline. I like Henry for this.

For 4H I went with the CZ scout (455/457 either is good). It meets the specs for 4H and comes with a single shot mag block. You can purchase a 5 or 10 round mag for when not shooting 4H events.
I would have suggested the toggle-action PWS T3 Summit rifle, but Volquartsen (https://volquartsen.com/products/1282-summit-rifle)bought the rights to it and doubled the price...

Thanks. I appreciate the feedback. Now I just wonder if I can find one locally.

We have a Golden Boy, and we may just start off with that and see how it goes.
It pains me to say this but Jax probably has a CZ

Thanks. I could let him try it out and then order on-line.
Ruger American. Cheap mags that work and made in America.

Thank you sir. I'll check them out.
Why did they pick a barrel OD that eliminates the historic Mossberg 44US?
