Very strange. Wife and kids were in the house and I was out for an hour or so with the dogs. When I came home I found a pocket knife on our deck about 8 feet from the door near the stairs that lead behind the house toward the woods. Wife and kids didn't hear anything, they never went outside and we didn't get any deliveries or anything.
Kinda scary. On high freaking alert here.

Got any cameras?
No. Well a trail cam I have to monitor wildlife. That's gonna be looking at the door from now on.
Have cops come, dust for prints on knife and door handle for a potential trespassing charge?
Best of luck. That's certainly disconcerting at any time, but highly so now.
Report to police, even if they don't do anything. If anything else happens in the neighborhood, this could be a useful data point for them to bring other charges if a real bad guy is around. Also, you might be surprised and have the cops show up. The ones I know have been bored and responding to things like this. Probably not as bored now though that more and more people are out.
Set up your trail camera, put the knife back where you found it, and wait. They might come back hoping to spot the knife and think they got away with their prior visit, when they find the knife.

Was it a nice knife?

Not sure if serious or sarcastic. Sarcastic? Police aren't going to dust for prints unless someone's already gotten ventilated for reasons other than covid. Only thing they would do is about a one-two-sentence note attached to the dispatch call. E.g. "RP said pocket knife found on deck. No POI in area."
Well, if fingerprints are out of the question then maybe they could just swab for DNA.

Put knife back where you found it covered in blood and fleshy matter.
Point trail cam at knife.
See if they come back and what they do....

Are you willing to ship it?

Yes, report it and keep your head on a swivel.

That’s even better :)

Crappy pocket folder. Looks like someone tried to sharpen it with a brick.
The Sherriff's Deputy said, "Thanks for letting us know. Nothing else has been going on in the area." He didn't think it was necessary to pick the knife up.

I have one of these running covering the approach to our house in the evening and at night...

Cheap and reliable, and hasn't false alarmed on small stuff, just true positives on people and bears.

Dayum, if it was a Benchmade it would have been mine when I stopped by to share a quart of Coors.
I’ve got a tree stand you can borrow. Hehe.
Maybe your lab brought it home.

I have those set up in the outbuildings & shop. For under $40 every building is alarmed. The cameras work but don't do anything other than send me an email. Which is useless when the phone's off

Since this is a scary family security issue you should inform your wife that now is the time to buy a new AR and Arlo camera system. This is the same strategy use to get new tools for home improvement projects.

LOL you beat me to it. I was about to ask "was it a benchmade?" :D
-Does your neighbor have a camera?
- Chance are very slim, but tell the department you found a knife. Who knows someone toss/ditch the knife to hide the evidence. If so, go to the local gas station/market and buy a Lotto.

This was my first thought, but the knife wasn't wet, muddy or rusty all. No grit in the hinges either.
Did he smell like a dead hiker when he came home?

I don't wonder if the two aren't related though. Drifter maybe?

Let's see. A crappy pocket knife that the blade looks like it'd been sharpened with a brick. Sounds like the perfect easily concealable tool to try to open windows and doors with.
Carry in your home.
Keep the doors and windows locked day and night
Keep your head on a swivel.

I figure a scumbag might have seen me drive out and thought he'd bust into the house. Whipped out his knife to jimmy open the door, then saw people inside and took off quickly. He must have missed his pocket and dropped the knife.
Pure speculation of course, but I can't come up with anything else.

Probably what happened, lots of people are desperate right now.

What do you guys think about overt security in situations like this? Motion lights, obvious camera, alarm warning signs. How much of a deterrent is that stuff?

Depends. If you have a couple 20x PTZ dome on a patrol, that's a ton of deterrent, people want to stay the hell away. Indicates you might be a nutter and who knows whats inside. If you have a cheap harbor freight fake camera, probably not all all. Sometimes even a negative factor (they can tell it's fake, it means you have no legit security)
Alarm warning signs: probably not much if any.
Motion lights: Could be quite a bit.
Your area has a history of break ins. Usually th houses are vacant.

I’ve always found a couple of big well trained dogs a great deterrent. I used to live in a very bad neighborhood, and when I moved in a bunch of my big biker buddies helped me move in and I had a chain link fence that surrounded the property. My 2 German Shepherds had free reign on the property, dog door that allowed the access to every area of the house. I never locked my doors and no one every came on my property without my blessing.
I’ve wondered how long it’ll take for people to start to get desperate and Gilpin to get a little weirder.

A concern shared by many mountain residents.
I lived off Magnolia Rd. for several years. People were always getting their mail stolen. Fourth of July Rd. had a couple of break ins a year.
Last I heard, Boulder had a 68% increase in home burglaries.
