Oh, I’d sure like to find a large lot of .30/06, safe for the Garand at around .27 cents per round but not someone else’s reloads. I do still have a few hundred rounds of M2 Ball, LC69. Guess it is being saved for the upcoming “apocalypse” or the “Purge”. LOL. [ROFL2]

In the early 1970's competing in Service Rifle class, had good results with gi barrels. Add glass bedding the action, match bullets in our own loads and match sights these were X ring capable rifles.

Hoser, does your AF Match Garand have the little metal block installed in the chamber to prevent attempts to chamber .30/06 or did they install a barrel specifically made for the .308. Finally, is your’s chambered for .308 or 7.62X51? Thanks.[blaster]

Me either. Most of my collecting has revolved our WWII and Marine Corps M1s. When I started looking for a Korean War era Garand, I thought I would look for a rebuild with a WWII receiver and a barrel stamp from prior to or early in the Korean War (50-53).

Came across an article in American Rifleman on Post-World War II M1 Garand Rifles (https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2016/5/17/post-world-war-ii-m1-garand-rifles/). It talks about the SA-52 mark, as well as the 4,200,000 serial number.

Excellent article as are all by Bruce Canfield. It explains why your Korean era SA-52 marked rifle has a low WWII serial number. I wonder if it might have the 5 plugged holes on the left side of the receiver as were made for future production M1C rifles? I also wonder if such plugged holes would even be detectable with refinishing and new parkerizing?

My Korean era Garands are like new arsenal rebuilds, HRA and SA in the 5.4 and 5.9 million serial ranges. A WWII Winchester would be sweet to have but the Korean era Garands were the best made with more refined machining.

I'm not too familiar with the sniper variants of the M1 Garand (M1C and M1D). Have to rely on my friend, John Kelly, for that. I don't think mine falls in to the M1C receiver category based on serial number. Mine predates by over a year when the M1C was officially adopted in mid-1944. Based on a Bruce Canfield article, The M1C Garand Sniper Rifle (https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2014/8/29/the-m1c-garand-sniper-rifle/), the M1Cs were in the 3.1 to 3.8 million range. I just looked at the left side and there is no evidence of five holes in the receiver.

My latest addition is a SA, sn dates to September-October 1955, barrel date is October 1955 making the rifle one month younger than me! Gauges 2 and 2+, fantastic shooter. CMP service grade. I will strip it down and check and record the drawing numbers, see what may be original and replaced.
I love these rifles, still trying to rescue a Winchester from CA, ongoing project with a few moving parts before I get it.

Last M1 Garand that I got from the CMP also had the white painted numbers on one side of the butt stock close to the butt plate. I had a hell of a time trying to remove those painted numbers. Sure didn’t want to sand the stock so most of the painted area that is deep in the wood grain is just going to remain there and I can easily live with it. . [blaster]

Way over priced for a CMP service grade. My experience with the CMP has been great, everything I purchased was better than described.
If you want a M1 rifle, buy from the CMP. Join the Garand Collector's Association (GCA), your CCW permit will qualify as the marksmanship requirement.
Don’t pay Armslist prices, support the CMP. You will get a solid shootable M1 Garand that you will enjoy for years.

Agree. I've been after very specific M1 Garands and frequent Rock Island auctions and Proxibid. Going prices for Garands on Rock Island has been $1300 for mix master rebuilds and then add the buyer's premium on top of that.

The key is to buy more than one Service Grade at a time. If you only order one- you never know exactly what you will get, and the stocks will more than likely be firewood grade. Buy 5, build the best one out of the five using the best parts, clean up and sell the rest for a profit.

I was thinking of taking my chances on one of those field grade Winchesters considering the price is pretty good. I already have a Korean War Springfield which would probably be considered a service grade (I didn't get it from the CMP) so I'm really just looking for a WW2 piece for my collection. And since the Winchesters are all WW2 era I figured I'd be better off that way then potentially getting another post WW2 Springfield or something like that.

I just signed up for the Garand Collectors Association this week and waiting for my card so I can complete my paperwork with the CMP for one. I guess I missed the boat on those 1911s I heard about.

I know Chuck, he refinished all the metal on my Garand. Did an excellent job, parkerized the parts that were originally parkerized, and blued the parts that were originally blued. I think he can work on damn near anything, but specializes in US military small arms, M1903's in particular.

CMP’s inventory is very low. We sell tens of thousands of rifles per year for the past few decades, it was bound to happen. We do continue to try and secure what little is left out there in different countries but is not a guarantee. We were inundated with orders during covid and election year and we are still trying to fill orders from a year ago for the service and field. We no longer accept mail orders for those or stock our stores with them. Instead we are building Special Rack grades and Expert Grades with GI parts, new wood and barrels to use what resources we can.
