View Full Version : The wait for tags

hunterhawk

There used to be a "backdoor" method of checking to see if you drew your tags or not.. since they do it differently now, i think the only way to check is to check your preference points.. does anyone remember when those start hitting for elk/deer/bear. I believe it was some tome mid to end of may last year but couldn't remember.

On a side note why is Colorado so freaking slow at getting this info out. Almost all other surrounding states are a lot faster.

Just antsy and need something to look forward to!

TRnCO
05-11-2020, 10:53
maybe check your credit card activity to see if there are any charges relating to CDOW?

I don't even look for the backdoor method these days. I just wait for the tag to arrive, or a notice telling me I didn't draw. Of course if I were putting in for any of the really hard to draw tags, Moose, sheep, goat, etc., I might be chompin' at the bit a little more than normal. I usually do put in for moose, but skipped it this year since my freezer is, well, still full of moose.

Why the state is so slow on getting results out is a mystery. Maybe it's because the system is so dang complicated, IDK.

I thought this was going to be about how it took them almost 2 months to send out fishing licenses.

But for the draw, June 1 is a long way out still. I don't check early anymore either.

CS1983

My assumption is I'll not draw elk, and then draw the most inconvenient tag possible (pronghorn) that I threw against the wall to see if it sticks.

05-11-2020, 12:59
There is no backdoor way to tell anymore that I know of. Your card is charged when they send the email telling you what you have, and I don?t think they update their system anymore until that time. You have to wait till the first week of June for the emails.

As far as draw results you just have to wait

Irving
06-01-2020, 23:11
Yeah that's pretty rough. I had to read the email twice because it said I didn't draw and I couldn't figure out why they were charging me. Forgot they are cashing in on certain species.

whitewalrus
06-02-2020, 09:52
Maybe by charging for the points they are hoping to get the amount required down? But it looks like the amount putting in keeps going up.

I?m sure they are also making plenty of money. Last year it looks like about 35K adults put in for the draw. I?m sure most opted to get a preference point.

It’s all about funding the State Parks, which are constantly losing money. Same with requiring a small game license just to apply for a point. Then they want to keep you from being able to hunt on those same parks. It’s all under the guise of lowering the number of points to draw. Huge mistake to merge the the state parks with the DOW, but it was intentional by those who did it.

I?m aware they are trying to bail out the sinking parks ship. Just don?t know if they also are trying to get less to put in or lower the point creep. But it seems more and more put in every year.

What’s the stat on draw for the GMU you chose?

If I draw pronghorn, I’m giving it back. I mainly applied thinking I wouldn’t draw it. Not gonna pay 400 bucks to hunt stink goat. I’ll save that opportunity for when I qual as a resident again. Not gonna pay $10/lb+ for something so rank it has to be made into sausage to stomach it.

You're either handling the meat poorly or hunting in the wrong place if you don't like antelope. I've heard other people make the same complaint, but I've only ever shot one so I don't know. Mostly I've heard that from my kind of dumb neighbors. Sage seems to be a complaint. I shot mine up in Pawnee and don't know how much sage is around though.

Hummer
06-03-2020, 09:33
Well, they are stinky on the outside. But pronghorn meat is excellent, delicate and sweet. Our cats prefer it to elk and moose. Care in the field to skin it quickly, keep the meat clean and get it cold soon is key. But I don't think it's exceptional vs. other big game. My pronghorn is fine after the drag across the prairie and the 3 hour drive home.

CS1983
06-03-2020, 09:36
I think it does depend on various factors, including the ability to not let the meat get touched by the hair (which contains the oils and thus scents, which some people don't mind and others think is awful), whether or not the thing was stressed prior to the shot, etc.

This thread talks about the various experiences: https://www.hunttalk.com/threads/antelope-taste-and-smell.271683/

I assisted with field dressing one and subsequently wanted to vomit every time I got my hands near my face for a few days. When the shooter was cooking the tenderloin that night, the other two of us there had to leave the cabin for a bit.

I've had it in sausage form and it was fine.

Irving
06-03-2020, 09:42
I didn't mean to start a debate about. I processed my antelope myself last year and it was my first ever attempt at doing anything beyond the most general of field dressing. I thought I was screwing it up the entire time (including during the field dressing) but it turned out to be the best game meat we've had by a long shot.

Anyway, looks I drew a buck tag in my muzzle loader area a year earlier than usual. Thanks Covid!

I had to apply as NR. I really wish they'd streamline and bring into parallel the timelines for "residency" across the board of voting, hunting, etc.

Oklahoma resident status was 60 days.

I don't have the hunting brochure with me right now so can't answer your question re the class of tags, but some units allow the purchase of an OTC bull license if you draw a cow license. I've done this for many years. It's a pretty cheap investment in the chance of happening upon a cow or a bull, but I've only taken both during one season in two years. One elk is usually enough for us but sometimes when the opportunity presents it's hard to resist. In 2011, I shot a bull and had an easy chance of also taking a cow or a calf that ran right to me. I passed on it. Taking two elk shortly before dark amounts to a lot of work, and a long walk back to camp late at night.

Oh, and so you don't think I'm more good than lucky, in the 2018 and 2019 seasons I didn't even see an elk. Skunked. A big forest fire in Sept. 2018 changed the area and the elk movements there. I'm going back again this year expecting more post-fire re growth and better luck hunting.

You can get a B if you have an A. Or you can get 2 B tags. C tags are unlimited. Only one A list license per species.

So if you got a B license then you can get the A license for OTC Bull rifle.

Thanks for explaining that properly. Having both cow and bull licenses is an advantage but with those OTC units comes more hunters, crowding and competition. By hunting farther, harder and longer one can pretty easily overcome the average hunter success rate of ~22%. Go prepared, hunt from dark to dark, don't go back to camp for lunch or a nap, stay optimistic, and never give up until the last light of the last day of season.

I have a hunting camp with a bunch of friends I hit every year. I always do an OTC bull when we go out. Except for every third year when I draw my RFW cow tag. I've was under the impression I couldn't get an OTC bull after I draw. I will look into it though, because the dates never overlap and I always miss out on the fun.

Going to be a fun fall. Eithersex Elk for muzzleloader as a second choice and pulled a buck pronghorn tag as well.

Edit - maybe it's because my cow draw tag is RFW. I'll download the book in a few minutes to check if that's an A. I may have been all backwards on this.
Thanks for clarifying folks. I checked my areas in the book. All A tags, so that explains why I’ve never been able to get two tags.

Well shoot. No extra charges for me. I was sure I had enough points last year for pronghorn, so I was doubly sure this year.
No pronghorn tag this year either. It will be interesting to see what they drew out at. I?ve been the unlucky one before, where 10 people with 3 points put in and 9 of them were awarded.

No pronghorn here, which is fine. I was going to sell it back anyway.

Okay, now that I'm home and everything is in. Got Buck muzzleloader (a year early), 1st rifle Bull, and doe Pronghorn from Nov1-Dec31. Pretty dang happy about that. I think that might be private property only.

GilpinGuy, muzzleloader elk can be a great tag if you're where the elk are. Congrats and good luck.

Irving, I think I've forgotten how to hunt deer it's been so long, but the pronghorn doe should be a very good opportunity. The does are a lot smaller than bucks. Still superb eating....

It's official, I drew a 2nd season cow tag as second choice, picked up an 8th PP for elk and will get an OTC bull tag, too. I'll hunt the same area in the Flat Tops for the 35th consecutive year. I know it well and have taken 30 elk there.

Now about pronghorn in NW Colorado....

Here's a couple pics to get everyone excited. [cigar]

Just Northeast of Godiva Rim has always been my go to for speed goat. Especially late seasons.

Do we know when the secondary draw results start getting posted? I realize this is the very first year, but I didn't see anything in the brochure. What I did notice was that the payment deadline for secondary draw is July 29th, so the draw must happen pretty quick.

Never seen a date either but I assume a few days before the payment deadline. Leftover tags go on sale early AUG, so you should have results soon. Not sure why the normal draw isn?t this fast now that you must do it online.

Got a moose point as that was what I put in for on that species. Drew antelope and bear tags for Park county. I've seen pronghorns and mulies on my property up there, but mule deer tags take longer to get for some reason. Never seen an actual bear there, but I have seen scat and prints, so I'm hoping for a new rug along with some extra freezer meat.

Looks like I didn't pull a cow tag, or bear tag for secondary draw, but I already got three tags, so not the worst. I have a first time hunter who just put in for his first tags ever on this secondary draw. Waiting to see if he draws anything for the seasons I'm already hunting.
