View Full Version : ak47 headspace
i have a romy ak47 with a US made receiver. i shot 200 rounds thru it today, never a jam or ftf but some times the bolt didnt shut all the way when i cycled it by hand after loading a mag, i had to bump it with my hand. i think my headspace may be to tight. does any one have any gauges or shade tree methods of checking it? or does any one check and adjust the headspace locally? i have heard of some people using pennys against the barrel and hitting it with a hammer if very little adjustment is needed. got any suggestions?
If you hit it with your hand and the bolt locks, it is not a head space problem. It is one off alignment or there may be a space on the right hand side between the trunnion and the receiver. Sometimes the bolt won't clear that part of the trunnion, causing what you're saying. But difficult to diagnose without seeing it.
on steel poly wolf it is fine. on brass yugo it is when it acts up. i think im going to trade off the yugo brass for steel wolf.
If you put your mag in, can you move it forward and backward a tiny bit? Sometimes the space between the trunnion and the trigger guard is off, causing this problem. But if you're riding the bolt carrier, this will happen, too. Again, if the headspace was off, it would act the same on most rounds.
