My 6 year old is into model rockets now but they dont allow launching in broomfield parks and open spaces. Anyone know a place in northern denver area we can launch them?

Was talking to a Co-Worker who is deeply involved with Model rockets (starting to get into the really expensive stuff), and he's got me wanting to get into rockets. Fortunately you can launch the beginner stuff just about anywhere here, they've also got a few places dedicated to all levels of launching. Hopefully you find a place, if so, be sure and post pics/video.

I think Longmont allows it with a permit. I think the permit is cheap free.
And if you are this way you can have the old rocket I launched with the kids and whatever gear I find for it.

Make sure to use streamers instead of parachute if it's going to be windy.

Might have to fix the fins upon recovery, but you'll usually get it back. Not necessarily the case if it catches a gust with a parachute.

My dad would do model rockets with his science classes. Ended up building a crazy launch control system out of a briefcase with something like 12 ignition switches. Thing looks like a bomb. lol.

Unfortunately, we are currently under covid restrictions/no fly by the park because we're known for filling the parking lot every time we fly. We hope to be back to operations very soon. Please pm me or contact us through our website.

We're a 501(c)(3) & there's no membership fees to fly. We have a menagerie of people from ULA, School of Mines students, boy/girl scouts, aerospace engineers, Moms, Dads ... you name it. All ages are welcome to attend & fly. *Please make note of our size & propellant limits for this venue.

We'd love to have you come fly with us.

I found my old Estes launch pad and controller at my folks' a few weeks ago. Been thinking about building a couple and getting back into it a bit. Thanks for the links, Chick. I'll check it out.

Exactly this, but making my daughter do it.

Fair. I don't have kids, so I have to own it. What can you do?

It looks like from your site Lakewood shut it down completely at that park, is that still the case or have they relented?

If you're just doing some smaller rockets, I'm sure I can arrange for you to come out to a friend's east of DIA. We shot some off a few weeks back with his kids

Its been an ongoing 'discussion' that was nearly sorted in our favor until Covid gave them an opportunity to postpone.

I would encourage anyone interested in rocketry to view the modern classic, October Sky. My dad showed it to his students every year.

My oldest is old enough that a basic Estes Alpha III would be a doable build.

Growing up, we used to launch in the field next to our house. We did all kinds of neat experiments. From a standard engine with streamers and packing the tube with powdered chalk to gluing in a D engine and loading the nose cone with weight to balance it (those went high).

My dad had a teaching partner who would do that but load the nose come with a binary explosive and launch horizontally at objects. Giggity.

My first and only build was in the '70s. Had that sucker with the balsa wood fins all doped up and painted something sweet. Took it for its maiden flight and it was fairly windy. Pointed the launcher a bit in the direction that the wind was coming from. Launched it and the wind seemed to die back at that moment. Figured the breeze would still bring it back our direction on the parachute. When the kicker fired on the motor to pop out the nose cone and parachute, the motor mount blew out the back and the rocket went into the ground like a ballistic missile.

Well, that was fun. [Coffee]

I enjoy watching October Sky. Oddly, when I mention it to most people, they have no idea, or no interest.

Yup. That's when we got the media involved.

C.R.A.S.H. was also featured on all the local news channels.

... words & more words...

As I said before, covid was just another excuse for the park to postpone.

Its a long, story.

There is a group that launches just south of hwy 52 east of Prospect Valley. We have pulled to shoulder a time or two to watch.

We are usually too far away to see detail but can see their bigger stuff ok, small stuff we can see take off and occasional chute.

I think they have chase team for when the wind jukes them. They seem to spend alot of time waiting, we assume for the wind.

We gave up model rockets cause the wind is so prevalent out here and minions were more interested in guns & bikes.

Poked around trying to find group I posted about, found these guys instead. Looks like they have couple launch sites on Pawnee and have launch days scheduled.

I saw that too, it's an option but man it's an hour and a half drive. I go that far to shoot but just wanting to launch a few rockets with the kiddo is kinda far.

That's typically the bigger rockets. FAA waiver flavor.

That's the biggest asset in fighting for C.R.A.S.H. to continue @ the park as we're the only supervised, regulated & insured aerospace lab for all ages & small and mid-sized rockets in metro Denver, period.
