Does having a single thread about all of the primary options rather than each contest make sense to folks?

Being unaffiliated, I can either vote in the Republican or Democrat primaries.

The Congressional contests on the Republican side do not have opposition. There are 2 candidates for the CU regents and County Commissioner - District 2 which don't concern me as much as the Senate race.

I'm kicking around the idea of voting in the Democrat primary and picking the Senate candidate that will create the most friction for the DNC. Hickenlooper will get the name recognition, but will Romanoff be able to compete with that?

Us against them and fringe candidate on both sides. What happens when you idea backfires and you end up with the person you hate?

I won't be voting Dem in the actual election in November. Doesn't matter which Dem gets elected, neither of them will be ones I like.

If the Dems get a bad candidate, there's a chance more of their voters won't bother to vote. Either way, it makes no sense for me to cast a primary ballot for Gardner since he's running unopposed.

By the way, this stupid system was put in place by the voters. I voted against it since I wanted closed primaries and for the parties to pay for the primaries and not the state. I didn't ask for it, but why not play the game?

Does closed primaries mean that you have to join a party to vote in their primaries?

Yes, the way it should be.

Having to join a special club in order to express our voting rights as Americans is how it should be?

I watched an hour long Q&A between Michael Allen and Mark Waller, my only two choices on the republican ballot — 4th judicial DA — and I came away knowing f*** all about anything or either. On the upside, Longinos Gonzalez has a cool first name. Named after St. Longinus, who in tradition was the Roman soldier that stabbed the side of Christ with his spear.

Maybe we need some spears. Just not Brittany. Leave’r her alone.

Not to vote, but to select a party's candidate via a primary. Republicans used to do a caucus here in CO.

Parties should be wholly responsible for choosing their own candidates IMO.

No party affiliation is required to vote in a general election. Just need to be registered.

That doesn't sound unreasonable.

Apparently reason was lost on the CO voting majority.

Parties should be eliminated from our voting.

List all candidates on one ballot. Top 2 vote getters go to the November election.

Being required to join a mailing list to vote is just asinine.

You're not "required to join a mailing list to vote". I think we can agree that's a bit of an exaggeration. Hell, you don't even need ID or proof of citizenship to vote, so 'requirements' are not very demanding.

Since switching from Republican to Unaffiliated, I haven't gotten near the junk mail that I used to. Had one text regarding Romanoff for Senate.

Going to a system like you describe sounds similar to what Louisiana does. It's a mess. It results in the possibility of multiple runoff elections.

Louisiana?s Nov. 3, 2020, election is an all-comers primary, where candidates of all parties are listed on one ballot together. If no candidate for a race receives a majority of the votes, the winner will be determined in a runoff on Dec. 5.

What is so wrong with an all comers primary and a 2 person election with the top 2 vote getters? No extra ballots, actually fewer. 1 for primary, 1 for final instead of 1 democrat, 1 republican primary and 1 final, which could go to a runoff with a 3rd party on the final.

The all comers ballot eliminates the party's influence on our elections. Outsiders of the good ole boy club could win.

Is that happening on June 30, 2020?

The pooper and jacamoff debate is a contest in woke, making me nauseous to watch humans behave in such a manor.

Watching those two literally apologize and grovel for "not having done enough" to save all the oppressed was more than I could take.

I want to know the enemy and his plans but I ain't watching that shit.

No, having to join the club to in order to pick who that club puts up. You still get to express your voting rights as an American in the general election. I was against open primaries precisely because they open up primaries to shenanigans and are fundamentally stupid -- and I say that as an unaffiliated voter who didn't get to vote in primaries before open voting.

Having said that, since open primaries are the law here in Colorado, I see no point in voting in the Republican primary when I can try to sway the Democratic primary toward least damage. Have to be careful what you wish -- I thought Barack Obama was less dangerous than Hillary Clinton in 2008 (actually, I still do) -- but this year it seems to be all about damage control.

I think I might be swayed. I have a reaction to the us vs them sentiment that it creates, but I don't really see a way around it. Perhaps if there were more realistically viable parties I wouldn't feel so strongly against forcing tribe membership. Within the context of what is trying to be accomplished though, of course your team should get to chose your own team's captain.

So, I'm registered as a Republican, and received a mail-in ballot a few days ago. I noticed that ALL the choices on it are all Republicans. I thought we still got the choice between all party's candidates?

Does this mean that voters registered as Democrats will get ballots with ONLY Democrat choices? Same with Independants or whoever?

Seems pretty sketchy to me.....

Yes, no.

Registered democrats get only a democratic ballot, people who do not declare a party get both democrat and republican ballots.

They can only return one ballot, so they can either vote for the candidate of their choice or sabotage the party of their choice.

I have one choice on my ballot: the 4th Judicial DA.

Lol. The rest are intra-party uncontested in the primary.

So that's why my wife got both. But I think it's fuckin' WRONG! You should get one ballot with EVERYBODY on it, and the freedom to vote for whodamnever you want! Isn't that the way it's SUPPOSED to be??

Yes!!!

End the party influence/control in our elections. They are virtually worthless.

And I will add, in a tax payer funded election, parties should have no say on who is on the ballot. The only control they could exert is to ask their members to have only 1 candidate from the party on the tax payer sponsored elections.

Gman

This is a primary, not the general election. The general election is where you get to vote for whomever is on the ballot. IMO parties should have the entire say as to who is representing their party in a primary (which currently isn't the case due to CO vote in 2016). A candidate can get on the general election ballot without party affiliation, but it would be extremely difficult to win such a campaign flying solo in a general election. That's just the way it is.

I didn't make these rules, so this thread is all about leveraging the rules as they are for this coming primary.

I realize you guys have a wish list. Why don't you try and get that on a future ballot? This is not the place for it.

In a general election, yes. In countries or states where the primary is open (supposedly to whittle the options for a general election down and ensure the winner actually gets a majority instead of a small plurality), also yes. The primary election is about selecting who the candidates for a particular party will be in the general election. If you're selecting Democrats, you should be voting only for Democrats in the primary. If you're in the Razorback party, you shouldn't be voting on who the Bruins get to run.

Yes!!!

Wrong. There's a lot to say about the corruption within parties and addressing that but any organized group (parties) will generally overwhelm a disorganized random "movement".
