Does anyone else here make their own blades? I'm still playing around with them here and there. I jave done a lot of stock removal blades, but the last few years I have been forging with a gas forge. I made quite a bit of damascus a few years ago and am still using my stockpile. 82010

I?ve always thought it looked kind of fun but I need another hobby like I need a good hard kick to the old twig and giggle berries. I?ll just live vicariously by watching YouTube videos.
I even have an expensive, fully programmable kiln that would likely be the cat?s meow for heat treating.

That's some very nice work. I love the look of Damascus steel. Maybe when I retire I will pick up knife making.
The most I've ever done was just handles, nice blades!!!

Not a knife but, something I forged last summer in Sweden

Very nice. I am hoping to get a mandrel to build some tomahawks. I am hoping to build some out of damascus for a friend and myself.

Mandrel seems to be the tough part. You could forge one but without a power hammer seems like a lot of work.

All those pics show good work! I was a Fabrication/Foundry/Brazing Welder in Oil Patch for over 30 years and when I get retired and settled I'm taking up real knife making. I've off and on made knives and axes mostly just killing time fast kinda stuff not that much quality at all.

My first attempt at a Chef's knife. I'll give it to the chef tomorrow and see how it holds up. His hands are smaller than mine, so I tried to make the handle fit his hand.

A before, during and post hardening pic.
The damascus I made is a 32 layer twist. I have some 128 layer around somewhere, but I like the wider lines. 15N20 and 1095.
