View Full Version : color fill for safety...big argument lol

So I built my 1st AR. I color filled the safety selector. I did RED for fire and WHITE for safe. I am having a HUGE battle with my brother-in-law and he is insisting the SAFE should be green. I've only seen white, and in my newby brain GREEN means GO and I think THAT is confusing. I did online searches and only see white. He starts saying all his "shooting professional friends" agree that it should be green. Help me decide thanks.

I fill mine in with clear....flat clear.
Do what YOU want.
I prefer no fill but I do have a couple FALs that I have filled to match historical examples.. of which safe is white and fire is red.

HK says white for safe and red for fire ... so your BIL wants to argue with Heckler and Koch?

If safe is any color at all, all I've ever seen is white.
I'm curious to know what sort of "shooting professionals" those apparent experts are.

Every firearm I've ever seen that had colored markings had white for Safe and red for Fire. I would also like to see him show his work.
That said, it's your AR, so it's your call. Do what you like with it, and screw what anyone else thinks.
Tell him that all my shooting professional friends have brother-in-laws that are smart.

The US Army trained troops for WW2 with the Mossberg M44 It had green and red buttons at the rear of the rifle for safe and fire markings.

I?ve never seen anything other than red/white markings where color is used. Red = dead.
Red/green may be an issue for those with colorblindness.
But as others have said, it?s your gun. Go with whatever makes you happy. Most ARs do not have color fill.

OK I laughed out loud on that one!

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Now my AR won't look like a Christmas tree!!

I have one and can confirm. That's the only gun I can remember seeing Christmas colors on.

Well, at least one non shooting professional (me) thinks that looks pretty darn good. Nice work.

Tell your brother in law to get his own AR, that way he won't t have to worry about yours.
Or if you really want to set him straight tell him your going to screw his sister!

Thanks. I can't wait to try it out!
I do my fire as green (for go time) and safe as red (for stop shooting).
J/k.
Call of Duty isn?t really a profession. Just saying.

It's your gun do what you want. I have never seen green for fire on a gun before. The colors you did are legit.

I don't know. That white kinda triggers me, in a low key racist sort of way. You don't have any Hawaiian shirts, do you ;)

I had a simple argument with my brother-in-law recently. He insists it?s pink but I?m pretty sure it?s more of a salmon....
Is your BIL named Raymond? Does he wear a helmet always?
FFS. Green on a safe mark.
Point out that the most common form of color blindness is red-green (people can't tell the difference between those two colors).
Then, given this day and age, accuse him of being a "colorist".

Green is a dark color - it's going to be tough to see except under ideal lighting conditions. White can be seen much more easily.
See, white. ;)

When I was building an 80% lower I wanted to do mine with the safe position reading "SALAAM" (peace), and the fire position reading "JIHAD"
If you go with Red/Green, then if your wife doesn't find you handsome, she'll at least find you handy.

I got that reference.
Well played
I never color mine. I don’t see the point. Is the selector pointed forward or up?
The only quick glance scenario I can see it being a problem is on binary triggers or NFA classed MG’s where the selector can be fwd, up, or back.
And at that point, having the tip of the selector itself colored as well seems smart if such is desired (connected red colors = happy switch).

If anyone is looking at their selector switch to determine what positron it needs to be in for a given result, you're doing it wrong and additional training is needed.
Red means dead.
Tell your BIL to show pics or GTFO.
Is the selector pointed forward or up?
What about pointed backwards? Doesn't anyone have a selector that points backwards?

Is it going to be shot by anyone but you? If so, can they understand red means unsafe? If so, make the second color whatever the hell floats your boat.
As was pointed out earlier, the M44US used red and green buttons for the safety. There are NO colors at all on my M1 Garands or 1903A3s or AR-15s. For that matter, the only time I ever use the mechanical safeties are when I am letting Boy Scouts use them. Otherwise, my safety is between my ears.

My early Universal M1ish Carbine has a red dot for fire and a green dot for safe.
Fill it with black.
Now I've contributed and can go to sleep.

Yup, what I get for skimming... Even when replying...
Sorry about that!

Pink. Hot pink.
Pink is safe. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy....
No Safe/Fire markings. Cleaner is better.

No worries. Next time I’ll color code the portions of my response. :D

My response would've been, "Cool story BRO, my rifle my choice on color fill...oh, and H&K agrees with me."
Just a reminder...
Pulling the trigger to test if it is on safe isn't a good idea.
:-) :-)
Ya gotta look down the barrel to see if a round is chambered. It’s the new American way.
