I had a chance to clean and inspect my new .450 upper.

I cycled five rounds through it a couple times without firing because I had heard of feeding problem with this caliber.

I looked at the rounds and there is evidence of the firing pin hitting the primer.

I understand the free play in the firing pin caused this.
Is this excessive? Was this thing close the the dreaded "slam fire"?

I will not do this again in my home.

Sorry for the giant pictures if it's a problem.

Those look pretty normal for a free floating firing pin.

suspect thats part of the recommendations I've seen to use the CCI #41 primers in AR loads, because they are thicker and harder to ignite.

Looks like the normal from chambering in an AR. Do the same with your 556 to put you at ease.

That would not put me at ease at all.

Completely normal

Normal or not I won't do that in the house again. Also, experiments, for science, have confirmed this does happen in a typical AR.

My brother had a .450 upper slam fire in our hunting tent while trying to load a round without a mag. Commercial primers aren’t reliably safe for a free floating firing pin in a heavy bolt especially, imho.

The army had a comic about this around 2005. Dimpled primer is normal. Rotate out the first round in your magazine was their recommendation.
