People placing target holders on the highways.

The plastic cardboard signs are perfect for stapling targets on. Easy to dispose and super cheap, as in free.

It is 100% legal to remove political signs abandoned on public right of ways. Just don't trespass on private property.

And don't worry about the optics if you only remove certain ones...

Time to upcycle them into a better product - target holders?

I hear that recycling is good for the environment.

I've often wondered about the legality of doing that (to use for the same reason you identified).

To me, anything left on the public right of way is litter (unless it's been put there but the .gov/hwy dept.).

Wouldn't that be government litter?[Coffee]

CDOT frowns on those target holders placed in the right of ways. Please help the debris crews clean them up.
Just make sure it is within the ROW fences & not outside on private property.

I called the sheriff's office last year about some at 470 & Quebec. They said it was litter and can be cleaned up by anyone.

They said make sure its on the right of way.

Honestly, those plastic signs are the best 100y zero targets; way better than cardboard backers.

I've always been of the opinion that the effectiveness of signs having an impact on changing how people vote is right on par with the effort of convincing people that the signs they put up aren't effective.

Snatch up every single one you can if you can put it to any sort of real use.

So we got into this when I was involved in the Recall Morse campaign. Political signs are not "abandoned" until some time after Election Day. I think the people that placed the signs are supposed to remove them NLT 3 days after the election, maybe 1 day. After that, they are considered abandoned and you're doing a public service in removing them. Before that, you're interfering with their freedom of speech.

The simple act of placing a sign on a public easement is not abandoning the signs. In fact, you HAVE to place the signs on public easements unless you get the private property owner's concurrence.

The plastic ones are GREAT target backers. I got RecallMorse's agreement to harvest the old plastic signs (except ones they wanted to keep as memorabilia) and gave them to a local Scout camp. The plastic ones didn't succumb to rain the way the cardboard ones had.

Well until I'm arrested or charged for collecting these free target holders on public right of way, I will continue to do so.

On my drive out to Washington and back, it was surprising to see so many huge Trump 2020 signs along the drive in rural America.

If we want people to respect OUR signs, we should do the same for theirs until they actually are abandoned (i.e., after the election). It doesn't do our side much good if we can be credibly accused of suppressing their "message" the way Twitter suppresses anyone they disagree with.

Placing election signs in a state right of way is illegal. I figure, I'm just helping CDOT out. (Even though I hate them).

Yup. Political signs aren't changing anyone's mind for POTUS. Nobody cares. Get caught on camera swiping one though, and you'll make national news to add to the negative press.

As I said earlier, the legal opinion we got for the RecallMorse campaign was that placing signs on public easements was completely legal as long as they didn't interfere (e.g., block) with normal operations. Side of the road and medians were just fine and normal.

Maybe in a local jurisdiction right-of-way. State ROW is illegal.

“Federal and state laws prohibit campaign and other non-approved signs in our right-of-way,” says CDOT Division of Maintenance Director Kyle Lester. “And when our crews attempt to remove signs —particularly those that pose a safety hazard or interfere with maintenance activities — it’s taking away time from their regular duties.”
